Proverbes 6
1 Mon fils, si tu t’es rendu garant pour ton ami, et que tu aies engagé à un étranger ta main,
My son, If thou hast become surety for thy friend, if thou hast struck thy hand for a stranger;
2 Tu t’es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, et tu as été pris par tes propres discours.
If thou art ensnared through the words of thy mouth, if thou art caught through the words of thy mouth:
3 Fais donc ce que je dis, mon fils, délivre-toi toi-même, parce que tu es tombé dans la main de ton prochain. Cours de tous côtés, hâte-toi, réveille ton ami;
[Then] do this by all means, my son, and deliver thyself, because thou art come into the power of thy friend, Go hasten to him, and urge thy friend.
4 N’accorde point de sommeil à tes yeux, et que tes paupières ne s’assoupissent point.
Grant not any sleep to thy eyes, nor slumber to thy eyelids.
5 Dégage-toi, comme un petit daim qui échappe de la main, et comme un oiseau qui fuit de la main d’un oiseleur.
Deliver thyself as a roebuck from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va à la fourmi, ô paresseux, et considère ses voies, et apprends la sagesse;
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; look on her ways, and become wise.
7 La fourmi, quoiqu’elle n’ait ni chef, ni maître, ni prince,
She, that hath no prince, officer, or ruler,
8 Prépare dans l’été sa nourriture, et rassemble durant la moisson ce qu’elle doit manger.
Provideth in the summer her provision, gathereth in harvest-time her food.
9 Jusqu’à quand, paresseux, dormiras-tu? quand sortiras-tu de ton sommeil?
How long, O sluggard, wilt thou lie down? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Tu dormiras un peu, tu sommeilleras un peu, tu mettras un peu les mains l’une dans l’autre, afin que tu dormes:
“A little [more] sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in lying down;”
11 Et viendra à toi, comme un coureur de chemin, la détresse; et la pauvreté comme un homme armé. Mais si tu es actif, viendra ta moisson comme une source abondante, et la détresse fuira loin de toi.
But then will thy poverty come like a rover, and thy want as a man armed with a shield.
12 Un homme apostat, homme inutile, va tenant des discours pervers,
A Godless person is a man of injustice, who walketh with a distorted mouth.
13 Fait signe des yeux, frappe du pied, parle avec un doigt,
He blinketh with his eyes, he scrapeth with his feet, he pointeth with his fingers;
14 Avec un cœur dépravé il machine le mal, et en tout temps il sème des querelles;
Perverseness is in his heart, he contriveth evil at all times; he scattereth abroad discord.
15 En un moment lui viendra sa perte, et soudain il sera brisé, et il n’aura plus de remède.
Therefore shall suddenly come his calamity: unawares shalt he be broken without a remedy.
16 Il y a six choses que hait le Seigneur, et la septième, son âme la déteste:
Six things there are which the Lord hateth; and seven are an abomination unto his spirit:
17 Des yeux altiers, une langue menteuse, des mains versant un sang innocent,
Haughty eyes, a tongue of falsehood, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 Un cœur formant des pensées très mauvaises, des pieds prompts à courir au mal,
A heart that contriveth plans of injustice, feet that hasten to run after evil,
19 Un témoin fallacieux proférant des mensonges, et celui qui, entre des frères, sème des discordes.
A false witness that eagerly uttereth lies, and him that scattereth abroad discord among brethren.
20 Conserve, mon fils, les préceptes de ton père, et ne rejette pas la loi de ta mère.
Keep, O my son, the commandment of thy father, and reject not the teaching of thy mother:
21 Lie-les dans ton cœur continuellement, et mets-les autour de ton cou.
Bind them upon thy heart continually, tie them about thy throat.
22 Lorsque tu vas et viens, qu’ils marchent avec toi: lorsque tu dors, qu’ils te gardent, et te réveillant, parle avec eux;
When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou liest down, it shall watch over thee; and when thou art awake, it shall converse with thee.
23 Parce qu’un commandement est un flambeau, et la loi, une lumière, et que c’est la voie de la vie qu’une remontrance de discipline;
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light; and the way of life are the admonitions of correction:
24 Afin qu’ils te préservent d’une femme corrompue et de la langue flatteuse d’une étrangère.
To guard thee against a bad woman, from the flattery of an alien tongue.
25 Que ton cœur ne se passionne point pour sa beauté; et ne sois point pris par les signes de ses yeux;
Covet not her beauty in thy heart, and let her not conquer thee with her eyelids.
26 Car le prix d’une prostituée est à peine d’un pain seul; mais une femme ravit l’âme précieuse d’un homme.
For by means of a harlot [one is brought down] to the last loaf of bread: and an adulterous woman will even hunt for the precious life,
27 Est-ce qu’un homme peut cacher du feu dans son sein, sans que ses vêtements s’embrasent?
Can a man gather up fire in his lap, and shall his clothes not be burnt?
28 Ou marcher sur des charbons ardents, sans que soient brûlées les plantes de ses pieds?
Can a man walk along upon hot coals, and shall his feet not be burnt?
29 Ainsi celui qui s’approche de la femme de son prochain ne sera pas pur lorsqu’il l’aura touchée.
So it is with him that goeth in to his neighbor's wife: no one that toucheth her shall remain unpunished.
30 Ce n’est pas une grande faute, lorsque quelqu’un dérobe afin de remplir son âme affamée;
Men do not despise the thief, if he steal, to gratify his craving when he is hungry:
31 Pris, il rendra même le septuple, et il livrera tout ce qu’il a dans sa maison.
And if he be found, he must pay sevenfold; all the wealth his house must he give.
32 Mais celui qui est adultère, à cause de son manque de cœur, perdra son âme;
But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh sense: he that is the destroyer of his soul, will alone do this.
33 Il rassemble sur lui la turpitude et l’ignominie, et son opprobre ne sera pas effacé;
Plague and disgrace will he meet with; and his reproach will not be blotted out.
34 Parce que la jalousie et la fureur du mari ne pardonneront pas au jour de la vengeance,
For jealousy is the fury of a husband, and he will not spare on the day of vengeance.
35 Et il n’acquiescera aux prières de personne, et il ne recevra pas pour satisfaction les dons les plus nombreux.
He will not regard the appearance of any ransom; and he will not be content, though thou give ever so many bribes.
