Proverbes 25
1 Voici encore des paraboles de Salomon, qu’ont recueillies les hommes d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2 La gloire de Dieu est de cacher la parole, la gloire des rois, de scruter le discours.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3 Le ciel en haut et la terre en bas, et le cœur des rois est impénétrable.
The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Ôte la rouille de l’argent, et il en sortira un vase très pur.
Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the finer:
5 Ôte l’impiété de devant le roi, et par la justice s’affermira son trône.
Take away the wicked [from] before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6 Ne parais pas chercher la gloire devant le roi, et ne te tiens pas parmi les grands.
Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
7 Car il vaut mieux qu’on te dise: Monte ici, que d’être humilié devant le prince.
For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom thine eyes have seen.
8 Ce que tes yeux ont vu, ne le publie pas aussitôt dans une querelle; de peur que dans la suite, tu ne puisses réparer ton tort, lorsque tu auras déshonoré ton ami.
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
9 Traite ton affaire avec ton ami, et ne révèle pas un secret à un étranger;
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour [himself], and disclose not the secret of another:
10 De peur qu’il ne t’insulte, lorsqu’il t’aura appris, et qu’il ne cesse de te le reprocher. La faveur et l’amitié délivrent; conserve-les, afin que tu ne deviennes pas répréhensible.
Lest he that heareth it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away.
11 Comme sont les pommes d’or, sur des lits d’argent, ainsi est celui qui dit une parole en son temps.
A word fitly spoken is [like] apples of gold in baskets of silver.
12 C’est un pendant d’oreille d’or, et une perle brillante que celui qui reprend un sage et une oreille obéissante.
[As] an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [so is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13 Comme la fraîcheur de la neige, au jour de la moisson, ainsi est un messager fidèle pour celui qui l’a envoyé; il fait reposer son âme.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so is] a faithful messenger to them that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14 Des nuages, du vent et point de pluie à la suite, tel est l’homme qui se vante et ne remplit pas ses promesses.
[As] clouds and wind without rain, [so is] he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.
15 Par la patience, un prince se laissera fléchir, et une langue douce brisera la dureté.
By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16 Tu as trouvé du miel: mange ce qui te suffit de peur que, rassasié, tu ne le vomisses.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee; lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
17 Éloigne ton pied de la maison de ton prochain; de peur qu’un jour, rassasié de toi, il ne te haïsse.
Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.
18 Un trait, un glaive, une flèche acérée, tel est l’homme qui, contre son prochain, dit un faux témoignage.
A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 Une dent cariée, un pied lassé, tel est celui qui espère en un infidèle au jour de l’angoisse,
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is [like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20 Et qui perd son manteau au jour du froid. Il met du vinaigre dans du nitre, celui qui chante des cantiques à un cœur très mauvais. Comme la teigne au vêtement et le ver au bois, ainsi la tristesse de l’homme nuit à son cœur.
[As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.
21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger: s’il a soif, donne-lui de l’eau à boire;
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22 Car tu amasseras des charbons ardents sur sa tête; et le Seigneur te le rendra.
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
23 Le vent d’aquilon dissipe les pluies, et le visage triste, la langue médisante.
The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24 Mieux vaut demeurer sur l’angle d’un toit qu’avec une femme querelleuse, et dans une maison commune.
It is better to dwell in the comer of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house.
25 C’est de l’eau fraîche à une âme altérée, qu’une bonne nouvelle venant d’une terre éloignée.
[As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
26 Une fontaine troublée avec le pied, et une source corrompue, tel est le juste qui tombe devant l’impie.
[As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, [so is] a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
27 Comme manger beaucoup de miel n’est pas une bonne chose; ainsi celui qui scrute la majesté sera accablé par la gloire.
It is not good to eat much honey: so [for men] to search out their own glory is [not] glory.
28 Comme est une ville ouverte, et sans enceinte de murailles; ainsi est l’homme qui ne peut, en parlant, retenir son esprit.
He whose spirit is without restraint is [like] a city that is broken down and hath no wall.
