Proverbes 23
1 Quand tu seras assis pour manger avec le prince, considère attentivement ce qui est servi devant toi;
If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee:
2 Mets un couteau à ta gorge, si cependant tu es maître de ton âme.
and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such [meats]: but if thou art very insatiable,
3 Ne désire pas des aliments de celui chez qui est un pain de mensonge.
desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.
4 Ne travaille pas à t’enrichir; mais à ta prudence mets des bornes.
If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom.
5 Ne lève pas tes yeux vers des richesses que tu ne peux avoir; parce qu’elles se feront des ailes comme celles d’un aigle, et s’envoleront au ciel.
If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.
6 Ne mange pas avec un homme envieux, et ne désire pas de ses mets;
Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:
7 Parce que, semblable à un devin et à un augure, il juge de ce qu’il ignore. Mange et bois, te dira-t-il, et son cœur n’est pas avec toi.
so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:
8 Les aliments que tu avais mangés, tu les rejetteras; et tu perdras tes sages discours.
for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.
9 Ne parle pas à l’oreille des insensés, parce qu’ils mépriseront la doctrine que tu leur auras enseignée par tes paroles.
Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.
10 Ne touche pas aux bornes des petits; et n’entre pas dans le champ des orphelins;
Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:
11 Car leur proche est puissant; et lui-même jugera contre toi leur cause.
for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.
12 Que ton cœur s’avance vers la doctrine, et tes oreilles vers les paroles de la science.
Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
13 Ne soustrais pas à l’enfant la discipline; car si tu le frappes de la verge, il ne mourra pas.
Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death. (Sheol h7585)
15 Mon fils, si ton esprit est sage, mon cœur se réjouira avec toi;
Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart;
16 Et mes reins exulteront, lorsque tes lèvres parleront droiture.
and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right.
17 Que ton cœur ne porte pas envie aux pécheurs; mais dans la crainte du Seigneur sois tout le jour;
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18 Parce que tu auras l’espérance à ton dernier moment, et que ton attente ne sera pas frustrée.
For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.
19 Ecoute, mon fils, et sois sage; et dirige ton esprit dans la bonne voie.
Hear, [my] son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart.
20 Ne te trouve pas dans les festins des buveurs, ni dans les orgies de ceux qui apportent des viandes pour manger ensemble.
Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
21 Car ceux qui passent le temps à boire et qui payent leur écot, se ruineront, et l’assoupissement sera vêtu de haillons.
for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.
22 Ecoute ton père qui t’a engendré; et ne méprise pas ta mère, lorsqu’elle aura vieilli.
Hearken, [my] son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not [thy mother] because she is grown old.
23 Achète la vérité, et ne vends pas la sagesse, la doctrine et l’intelligence.
24 Le père du juste exulte; celui qui a engendré le sage se réjouira en lui.
A righteous father brings up [his children] well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.
25 Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent; et qu’elle exulte, celle qui t’a enfanté.
Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.
26 Donne-moi ton cœur, mon fils; et que tes yeux gardent mes voies.
[My] son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 Car c’est une fosse profonde, qu’une prostituée; et un puits étroit, qu’une étrangère.
For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.
28 Elle dresse des embûches sur la voie comme un voleur; et ceux qu’elle verra n’être pas sur leurs gardes, elle les tuera.
For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.
29 À qui malheur? au père de qui malheur? à qui les querelles? à qui les fosses? à qui les blessures sans motifs? à qui le trouble des yeux?
Who [has] woe? who trouble? who [has] quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who [has] bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?
30 N’est-ce pas à ceux qui s’arrêtent à boire le vin, et qui prennent goût à vider des coupes pleines?
Are not those of them that stay long at wine? [are] not [those] of them that haunt [the places] where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse [with them] openly.
31 Ne regarde pas le vin, quand il jaunit, lorsque sa couleur brille dans le verre: il entre doucement;
For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.
32 Mais à la fin, il mordra comme une couleuvre: et comme le basilic, il répandra son venin.
But at last [such a one] stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.
33 Tes yeux verront les étrangères, et ton cœur dira des choses perverses.
Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.
34 Et tu seras comme un homme dormant au milieu de la mer, et comme un pilote assoupi, le gouvernail ayant été perdu;
And thou shalt lie as in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot in a great storm.
35 Et tu diras: Ils m’ont frappé, mais je n’en ai pas souffert; ils m’ont traîné, et moi je ne l’ai pas senti: quand me réveillerai-je, et trouverai-je encore du vin?
And thou shalt say, They smote me, and I was not pained; and they mocked me, and I knew it not: when will it be morning, that I may go and seek those with whom I may go in company?
