Proverbes 22
1 Mieux vaux une bonne renommée que beaucoup de richesses: au-dessus de l’argent et de l’or est la bonne amitié.
A fair name is better than much wealth, and good favor is above silver and gold.
2 Le riche et le pauvre se sont rencontrés. Le créateur de l’un et de l’autre, c’est le Seigneur.
The rich and the poor meet together; but the Lord made them both.
3 l’homme habile a vu le mal et s’est caché: le simple a passé outre et il a souffert du dommage.
An intelligent man seeing a bad man severely punished is himself instructed, but fools pass by and are punished.
4 La fin de la modestie est la crainte du Seigneur, les richesses, la gloire et la vie.
The fear of the Lord is the offspring of wisdom, and wealth, and glory, and life.
5 Des armes et des glaives se trouvent sur la voie du pervers; mais celui qui garde son âme s’en retire bien loin.
Thistles and snares are in perverse ways; but he that keeps his soul will refrain from them.
6 C’est un proverbe: Le jeune homme suit sa voie; lors même qu’il sera vieux, il ne s’en écartera pas.
7 Le riche commande aux pauvres; et celui qui emprunte est l’esclave de celui qui prête.
The rich will rule over the poor, and servants will lend to their own masters.
8 Celui qui sème l’iniquité moissonnera des maux, et par la verge de sa colère il sera détruit.
He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds. God loves a cheerful and liberal man; but [a man] shall fully prove the folly of his works.
9 Celui qui est porté à la miséricorde sera béni: il a donné de son pain au pauvre. Il obtiendra la victoire et l’honneur, celui qui fait des présents; mais il ravit l’âme de ceux qui les reçoivent.
He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor. He that gives liberally secures victory an honor; but he takes away the life of them that posses [them].
10 Chasse le railleur, et s’en ira avec lui la querelle, et cesseront les plaintes et les outrages.
Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonors all.
11 Celui qui aime la pureté du cœur, à cause de la grâce de ses lèvres, aura pour ami le roi.
The Lord loves holy hearts, and all blameless persons are acceptable with him: a king rules with his lips.
12 Les yeux du Seigneur gardent la science; mais les paroles de l’homme inique sont confondues.
But the eyes of the Lord preserve discretion; but the transgressor despises [wise] words.
13 Le paresseux dit: Le lion est dehors, au milieu des rues je dois être tué.
The sluggard makes excuses, and says, [There is] a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets.
14 C’est une fosse profonde que la bouche de l’étrangère; celui contre qui le Seigneur est irrité y tombera.
The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it. Evil ways are before a man, and he does not like to turn away from them; but it is needful to turn aside from a perverse and bad way.
15 La folie est liée au cœur de l’enfant, et la verge de la discipline la fera fuir.
Folly is attached to the heart of a child, but the rod and instruction are [then] far from him.
16 Celui qui opprime le pauvre pour augmenter ses richesses donnera lui-même à un plus riche et sera dans la détresse.
He that oppresses the poor, increases his own substance, yet gives to the rich so as to make it less.
17 Incline ton oreille, et écoute les paroles des sages; applique ton cœur à ma doctrine.
Incline your ear to the words of wise men: hear also my word, and apply your heart,
18 Elle sera belle pour toi, lorsque tu la garderas au fond de ton cœur, et elle se répandra sur tes lèvres;
that you may know that they are good: and if you lay them to heart, they shall also gladden you on your lips.
19 Afin que ta confiance soit dans le Seigneur: c’est pour cela que je te l’ai montrée aujourd’hui,
That your hope may be in the Lord, and he may make your way known to you.
20 Voilà que je te l’ai décrite triplement, avec réflexion et science;
And do you too repeatedly record them for yourself on the table of your heart, for counsel and knowledge.
21 Afin de te montrer la certitude et les paroles de la vérité, pour répondre à ceux qui t’ont envoyé.
I therefore teach you truth, and knowledge good to hear; that you may answer words of truth to them that question you.
22 Ne fais point violence au pauvre, parce qu’il est pauvre: et ne brise pas l’indigent à la porte;
Do no violence to the poor, for he is needy: neither dishonor the helpless [man] in the gates.
23 Parce que le Seigneur jugera sa cause, et il percera ceux qui ont percé son âme.
For the Lord will plead his cause, and you shall deliver your soul in safety.
24 Ne sois pas ami d’un homme colère, et ne marche pas avec un homme furieux;
Be not companion to a furious man; neither lodge with a passionate man:
25 De peur que tu n’apprennes ses voies, et que tu n’en retires un scandale pour ton âme.
lest you learn of his ways, and get snares to your soul.
26 Ne sois point avec ceux qui engagent leurs mains, et qui se rendent caution des dettes;
Become not surety from respect of a man's person.
27 Car si tu n’as pas de quoi rendre, quel motif y a-t-il pour qu’il emporte la couverture de ton lit?
For if those have not whence to give compensation, they will take the bed [that is] under you.
28 Ne dépasse pas les anciennes bornes qu’ont posées tes pères.
Remove not the old landmarks, which your fathers placed.
29 As-tu vu un homme prompt dans son œuvre? il se tiendra devant les rois, et il ne sera pas devant les hommes obscurs.
It is fit that an observant man and [one] diligent in his business should attend on kings, and not attend on slothful men.
