1 Or les enfants de Ruben et de Gad avaient beaucoup de troupeaux, et ils possédaient en bestiaux d’immenses richesses. Lors donc qu’ils eurent vu que les terres de Jazer et de Galaad étaient propres à nourrir des animaux,
Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, and they saw that the region was suitable for livestock.
2 Ils vinrent vers Moïse et Eléazar, le prêtre, et les princes de la multitude, et dirent:
So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation, and said,
3 Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nemra, Hésébon, Saban, Nébo et Béon,
“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
4 Terre qu’a frappée le Seigneur en la présence des enfants d’Israël, est une contrée très fertile pour le pâturage des animaux: et nous, tes serviteurs, nous avons des bestiaux en très grand nombre:
which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, are suitable for livestock—and your servants have livestock.”
5 Nous prions donc, si nous avons trouvé grâce devant toi, pour que tu la donnes à tes serviteurs en possession, et que tu ne nous fasses point passer le Jourdain.
“If we have found favor in your sight,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”
6 Moïse leur répondit: Est-ce que vos frères iront au combat, et vous, vous demeurerez ici?
But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
7 Pourquoi bouleversez-vous les esprits des enfants d’Israël, afin qu’ils n’osent passer dans la terre que doit leur donner le Seigneur?
Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?
8 N’est-ce pas ainsi qu’ont agi vos pères, lorsque je les envoyai à Cadesbarné pour explorer cette terre?
This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to inspect the land.
9 Car, lorsqu’il furent venus jusqu’à la Vallée de la grappe de raisin, toute la contrée parcourue, ils bouleversèrent le cœur des enfants d’Israël, afin qu’ils n’entrassent point dans le pays que le Seigneur leur donna.
For when your fathers went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.
10 Le Seigneur, irrité, jura, disant:
So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and He swore an oath, saying,
11 Ils ne verront pas, ces hommes qui sont montés de l’Egypte depuis vingt ans et au-dessus, la terre que j’ai promise sous serment à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et qui n’ont pas voulu me suivre,
‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
12 Excepté Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, le Cénézéen, et Josué, fils de Nun: ceux-ci ont accompli ma volonté.
not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun—because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’
13 Et le Seigneur, irrité contre Israël, lui fit faire un détour par le désert pendant quarante ans, jusqu’à ce que fut détruite toute la génération qui avait fait le mal en sa présence.
The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation who had done evil in His sight was gone.
14 Et voilà que vous, vous avez surgi à la place de vos pères, rejetons et nourrissons d’hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter la fureur du Seigneur contre d’Israël.
Now behold, you, a brood of sinners, have risen up in place of your fathers to further stoke the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.
15 Si vous ne voulez point le suivre, il abandonnera le peuple dans le désert, et vous serez la cause de la mort de tous.
For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”
16 Mais eux, s’approchant plus près, dirent: Nous ferons des parcs de brebis et des étables de bestiaux, et aussi pour nos petits enfants des villes fortifiées;
Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones.
17 Mais nous-mêmes, armés et équipés, nous marcherons au combat devant les enfants d’Israël, jusqu’à ce que nous les introduisions dans leurs terres. Nos petits enfants, et tout ce que nous pouvons avoir seront dans des villes murées, à cause des embûches des habitants.
But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
18 Nous ne retournerons point dans nos maisons, jusqu’à ce que les enfants d’Israël possèdent leur héritage;
We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has taken possession of his inheritance.
19 Et nous ne chercherons rien au-delà du Jourdain, parce que nous avons déjà notre possession au côté oriental de ce fleuve.
Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
20 Moïse leur répondit: Si vous faites ce que vous promettez, marchez devant le Seigneur, tout prêts au combat;
Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,
21 Et que tout guerrier, armé, passe le Jourdain, jusqu’à ce que le Seigneur renverse ses ennemis,
and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,
22 Et que toute la terre lui soit soumise: alors vous serez irréprochables devant le Seigneur et devant Israël, et vous obtiendrez les contrées que vous voulez, devant le Seigneur.
then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
23 Mais si ce que vous dites, vous ne le faites point, il n’y a de doute pour personne que vous ne péchiez contre le Seigneur; et sachez que votre péché s’emparera de vous.
But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD—and be assured that your sin will find you out.
24 Bâtissez donc des villes pour vos petits enfants, des parcs et des étables pour vos brebis et vos bestiaux; et effectuez ce que vous avez promis.
Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
25 Alors les enfants de Gad et de Ruben dirent à Moïse: Nous •sommes tes serviteurs, nous ferons ce que commande notre maître.
The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “Your servants will do just as our lord commands.
26 Nous laisserons nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et nos bestiaux dans les villes de Galaad;
Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
27 Mais nous tous, tes serviteurs, nous marcherons à la guerre, tout prêts, comme toi, seigneur, tu le dis.
But your servants are equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
28 Moïse ordonna donc à Eléazar, le prêtre, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux princes des familles, dans les tribus d’Israël, et leur dit:
So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.
29 Si les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, tous armés pour la guerre devant le Seigneur, et que la terre vous soit soumise, donnez-leur Galaad en possession.
And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, with every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
30 Mais s’ils ne veulent pas passer armés avec vous dans la terre de Chanaan, qu’ils prennent parmi vous des lieux d’habitation.
But if they do not arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of Canaan.”
31 Les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben répondirent: Comme le Seigneur a dit à ses serviteurs, ainsi nous ferons.
The Gadites and Reubenites replied, “As the LORD has spoken to your servants, so we will do.
32 Nous-mêmes, nous marcherons armés devant le Seigneur dans la terre de Chanaan, et nous reconnaissons que nous avons déjà reçu notre possession au-delà du Jourdain.
We will cross over into the land of Canaan armed before the LORD, that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”
33 C’est pourquoi Moïse donna aux enfants de Gad et de Ruben, et à la demi-tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Séhon, roi de l’Amorrhéen, et le royaume d’Og, roi de Basan, et leur terre avec leurs villes d’alentour.
So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
34 Ainsi, les enfants de Gad reconstruisirent Gad, Dibon, Ataroth, Aroër,
And the Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Etroth, Sophan, Jaser, Jegbaa,
Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Bethnemra, Betharan, villes fortifiées, et des étables pour leurs troupeaux.
Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and they built folds for their flocks.
37 Mais les enfants de Ruben rebâtirent Hésébon, Eléale, Cariathaïm,
The Reubenites built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nabo et Baalméon en changeantes noms, et aussi Sabama; donnant des noms aux villes qu’ils avaient construites.
as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. And they renamed the cities they rebuilt.
39 Or, les enfants de Machir, fils de Manassé, marchèrent sur Galaad et la dévastèrent, l’Amorrhéen qui l’habitait ayant été tué.
The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
40 Moïse donna donc la terre de Galaad à Machir, fils de Manassé, qui y habita.
So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled there.
41 Mais Jaïr, fils de Manassé, s’en alla, et occupa ses bourgs, qu’il appela Havoth Jaïr, c’est-à-dire Bourgs de Jaïr,
Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages and called them Havvoth-jair.
42 Nobé alla aussi, et prit Chanath avec ses bourgades, et il l’appela de son nom, Nobé.
And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah, after his own name.
