1 Le Seigneur parla encore à Moïse, disant:
And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
2 Venge d’abord les enfants d’Israël des Madianites, et après cela tu seras réuni à ton peuple.
'Execute the vengeance of the sons of Israel against the Midianites — afterwards thou art gathered unto thy people.'
3 Et aussitôt Moïse: Armez, dit-il, pour le combat, des hommes d’entre vous, qui puissent exercer la vengeance du Seigneur sur les Madianites.
And Moses speaketh unto the people, saying, 'Be ye armed some of you for the host, and they are against Midian, to put the vengeance of Jehovah on Midian;
4 Que mille hommes de chaque tribu soient choisis du milieu d’Israël pour être envoyés à la guerre!
a thousand for a tribe — a thousand for a tribe, to all the tribes of Israel — ye do send to the host.'
5 Et ils donnèrent mille hommes de chaque tribu, c’est-à-dire, douze mille tout prêts pour le combat,
And there are given out of the thousands of Israel a thousand for a tribe, twelve thousand armed ones of the host;
6 Que Moïse envoya avec Phinéès, fils d’Eléazar, le prêtre; il lui remit aussi les vases saints et les trompettes pour en sonner.
and Moses sendeth them, a thousand for a tribe, to the host, them and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, to the host; and the holy vessels, and the trumpets of the shouting, in his hand.
7 Lors donc qu’ils eurent combattu contre les Madianites, et remporté la victoire, ils tuèrent tous les mâles,
And they war against Midian, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses, and slay every male;
8 Et leurs rois, Evi, Recem, Sur, Hur et Rébé, cinq princes de la nation; ils tuèrent aussi par le glaive Balaam, fils de Béor.
and the kings of Midian they have slain, besides their pierced ones, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor, they have slain with the sword.
9 Et ils prirent leurs femmes, leurs petits enfants, tous leurs troupeaux, tous leurs meubles; ils pillèrent tout ce qu’ils pouvaient avoir.
And the sons of Israel take captive the women of Midian, and their infants; and all their cattle, and all their substance, and all their wealth they have plundered;
10 La flamme consuma tant les villes que les bourgades et les châteaux.
and all their cities, with their habitations, and all their towers, they have burnt with fire.
11 Et ils enlevèrent le butin et tout ce qu’ils avaient pris, tant des hommes que des bêtes,
And they take all the spoil, and all the prey, among man and among beast;
12 Et ils les amenèrent devant Moïse et Eléazar, le prêtre, et toute la multitude des enfants d’Israël: mais tout ce qui pouvait être à leur usage, ils le portèrent au camp dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, contre Jéricho.
and they bring in, unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the company of the sons of Israel, the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto the camp, unto the plains of Moab, which [are] by Jordan, [near] Jericho.
13 Or Moïse, Eléazar, le prêtre, et tous les princes de la synagogue, sortirent à leur rencontre hors du camp.
And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the company, go out to meet them, unto the outside of the camp,
14 Et Moïse irrité contre les chefs de l’armée, les tribuns et les centurions, qui venaient de la guerre,
and Moses is wroth against the inspectors of the force, chiefs of the thousands, and chiefs of the hundreds, who are coming in from the host of the battle.
15 Dit: Pourquoi avez-vous réservé les femmes?
And Moses saith unto them, 'Have ye kept alive every female?
16 Ne sont-ce pas elles qui ont trompé les enfants d’Israël à la suggestion de Balaam, et vous ont fait prévariquer contre le Seigneur par le péché de Phogor, pour lequel aussi le peuple fut frappé?
lo, they — they have been to the sons of Israel, through the word of Balaam, to cause a trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and the plague is in the company of Jehovah.
17 Ainsi, tuez-les tous, tout ce qui est du sexe masculin même parmi les enfants; et égorgez les femmes qui ont connu des hommes;
'And now, slay ye every male among the infants, yea, every woman known of man by the lying of a male ye have slain;
18 Mais les jeunes filles et toutes les femmes vierges, réservez-les pour vous;
and all the infants among the women, who have not known the lying of a male, ye have kept alive for yourselves.
19 Et demeurez hors du camp pendant sept jours. Celui qui aura tué un homme, ou qui en aura touché un tué, sera purifié au troisième jour et au septième.
'And ye, encamp ye at the outside of the camp seven days — any who hath slain a person, and any who hath come against a pierced one, ye cleanse yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day — ye and your captives;
20 Et dans tout le butin, qu’il y ait, soit un vêtement, soit un vase, et quelque chose de destiné aux usages, en peaux de chèvres, en poils et en bois, il sera purifié.
and every garment, and every skin vessel, and every work of goats' [hair], and every wooden vessel, ye yourselves cleanse.'
21 De son côté, Eléazar, le prêtre, parla ainsi aux hommes de l’armée qui avaient combattu: Voici le précepte de la loi qu’a commandé le Seigneur à Moïse:
And Eleazar the priest saith unto the men of the host who go in to battle, 'This [is] the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses:
22 L’or, l’argent, l’airain, le fer, le plomb et l’étain,
only, the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23 Et tout ce qui peut passer par les flammes, sera purifié par le feu. Mais tout ce qui ne peut supporter le feu, sera sanctiflé par l’eau d’expiation;
every thing which may go into fire, ye cause to pass over through fire, and it hath been clean; only, with the water of separation it is cleansed, and all that may not go into fire, ye cause to pass over through water;
24 Et vous laverez vos vêtements au septième jour, et, purifiés, vous entrerez ensuite dans le camp.
and ye have washed your garments on the seventh day, and have been clean, and afterwards ye come in unto the camp.'
25 Le Seigneur dit aussi à Moïse:
And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
26 Faites le dénombrement de tout ce qui a été pris, depuis l’homme jusqu’à la bête, toi, Eléazar, le prêtre, et les princes du peuple,
'Take up the sum of the prey of the captives, among man and among beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers of the company;
27 Et tu partageras également le butin entre ceux qui ont combattu et qui sont sortis pour aller à la guerre, et tout le reste de la multitude;
and thou hast halved the prey between those handling the battle who go out to the host and all the company;
28 Et tu sépareras la part du Seigneur de la part de ceux qui ont été à la guerre: une âme sur cinq cents, tant d’entre les hommes que d’entre les bœufs, les ânes et les brebis;
and thou hast raised a tribute to Jehovah from the men of war, who go out to the host, one body out of five hundred, of man, and of the herd, and of the asses, and of the flock;
29 Et tu la donneras à Eléazar, le prêtre, parce que ce sont les prémices du Seigneur.
from their half ye do take, and thou hast given to Eleazar the priest — the heave-offering of Jehovah.
30 Tu prendras aussi de la moitié attribuée aux enfants d’Israël, la cinquantième partie des hommes, des bœufs, des ânes, des brebis, de tous les animaux, et tu la donneras aux Lévites, qui veillent à la garde du tabernacle du Seigneur.
'And from the sons of Israel's half thou dost take one possession out of fifty, of man, of the herd, of the asses, and of the flock, of all the cattle, and thou hast given them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.'
31 Et Moïse et Eléazar firent comme avait ordonné le Seigneur.
And Moses doth — Eleazar the priest also — as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
32 Or, le butin que l’armée avait pris fut de six cent soixante-quinze mille brebis,
And the prey, the residue of the spoil which the people of the host have spoiled, is of the flock six hundred thousand, and seventy thousand, and five thousand;
33 De soixante-douze mille bœufs,
and of the herd two and seventy thousand;
34 De soixante et un mille ânes,
and of asses one and sixty thousand;
35 De trente-deux mille personnes du sexe féminin, qui n’avaient pas connu d’hommes.
and of human beings — of the women who have not known the lying of a male — all the persons [are] two and thirty thousand.
36 Et la moitié fut donnée à ceux qui avaient été au combat: trois cent trente-sept mille cinq cents brebis,
And the half — the portion of those who go out into the host — the number of the flock is three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, and seven thousand and five hundred.
37 Desquelles furent supputées pour la part du Seigneur six cent soixante-quinze brebis;
And the tribute to Jehovah of the sheep is six hundred five and seventy;
38 Et des trente-six mille bœufs, soixante-douze bœufs;
and the herd [is] six and thirty thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah [is] two and seventy;
39 Des trente mille cinq cents ânes, soixante et un ânes;
and the asses [are] thirty thousand and five hundred, and their tribute to Jehovah [is] one and sixty;
40 Des seize mille personnes, trente-deux personnes passèrent à la part du Seigneur.
and the human beings [are] sixteen thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah [is] two and thirty persons.
41 Et Moïse remit le nombre des prémices du Seigneur à Eléazar, le prêtre, comme il lui avait été ordonné,
And Moses giveth the tribute — Jehovah's heave-offering — to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
42 Pris sur la moitié des enfants d’Israël, qu’il avait séparée pour ceux qui avaient été aux combats.
And of the sons of Israel's half, which Moses halved from the men who war —
43 Mais quant à la moitié qui était échue au reste de la multitude, c’est-à-dire de trois cent trente-sept mille cinq cents brebis,
and the company's half is, of the flock three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred;
44 De trente-six mille bœufs,
and of the herd six and thirty thousand;
45 De trente mille cinq cents ânes,
and of asses thirty thousand and five hundred;
46 Et de seize mille personnes,
and of human beings sixteen thousand —
47 Moïse prit la cinquantième partie, et la donna aux Lévites, qui veillaient dans le tabernacle du Seigneur, comme l’avait ordonné le Seigneur.
Moses taketh from the sons of Israel's half the one possession from the fifty, of man and of beast, and giveth them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
48 Et lorsque les chefs de l’armée, les tribuns et les centurions se furent approchés de Moïse, ils dirent:
And the inspectors whom the thousands of the host hath, (heads of the thousands and heads of the hundreds), draw near unto Moses,
49 Nous, tes serviteurs, nous avons recensé le nombre des combattants, que nous avons eus sous notre main, et il n’en a pas manqué même un seul.
and they say unto Moses, 'Thy servants have taken up the sum of the men of war who [are] with us, and not a man of us hath been missed;
50 Pour ce motif, nous offrons chacun en don au Seigneur ce que nous avons pu trouver dans le butin d’or: périscélides, bracelets, anneaux, ornements de la main droite, et petits colliers, afin que tu pries pour nous le Seigneur.
and we bring near Jehovah's offering, each that which he hath found, vessels of gold — chain, and bracelet, seal-ring, [ear] -ring, and bead — to make atonement for ourselves before Jehovah.'
51 Et Moïse et Eléazar, le prêtre, reçurent tout l’or en diverses espèces,
And Moses receiveth — Eleazar the priest also — the gold from them, every made vessel,
52 Du poids de seize mille sept cent cinquante sicles, des tribuns et des centurions.
and all the gold of the heave-offering which they have lifted up to Jehovah is sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from heads of the thousands, and from heads of the hundreds;
53 Car ce que chacun avait pris dans le butin était à lui.
(the men of the host have spoiled each for himself);
54 Et après avoir reçu cet or, ils le portèrent dans le tabernacle de témoignage, comme un monument des enfants d’Israël devant le Seigneur.
and Moses taketh — Eleazar the priest also — the gold from the heads of the thousands and of the hundreds, and they bring it in unto the tent of meeting — a memorial for the sons of Israel before Jehovah.
