1 Or, vinrent les filles de Salphaad, fils d’Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, qui fut fils de Joseph, dont les noms sont Maala, Noa, Hégla, Melcha et Thersa,
And there came nigh the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Chepher, the son of Gil'ad, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Menasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters, Machlah, No'ah, and Choglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
2 Et elles se présentèrent devant Moïse et Eléazar, le prêtre, et tous les princes du peuple, à l’entrée du tabernacle d’alliance, et dirent:
And they stood before Moses, and before Elazar the priest, and before the princes, and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
3 Notre père est mort dans le désert, et il n’a pas été dans la sédition qui fut excitée contre le Seigneur sous Coré, mais il est mort dans son péché: lui n’a pas eu d’enfants mâles. Pourquoi son nom est-il ôté de sa famille, parce qu’il n’a pas eu de fils? Donnez-nous une possession parmi les parents de notre père.
Our father died in the wilderness; but he was not among the company of those that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korach; but in his own sin he died, and sons he had not.
4 Et Moïse porta leur cause au jugement du Seigneur,
Why should the name of our father be done away from the midst of his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us a possession among the brothers of our father.
5 Qui lui dit:
And Moses brought their cause before the Lord.
6 C’est une chose juste que demandent les filles de Salphaad: donne-leur une possession parmi les parents de leur père, et qu’elles lui succèdent dans l’héritage;
And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
7 Mais aux enfants d’Israël, tu diras ces choses:
The daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly: thou shalt indeed give them a possession as an inheritance among the brothers of their father; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
8 Lorsqu’un homme mourra sans fils, l’héritage passera à sa fille:
And unto the children of Israel shalt thou speak, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then shall ye cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
9 S’il n’a point de fille, il aura pour successeurs ses frères;
And if he have no daughter, then shall ye give his inheritance unto his brothers.
10 Que s’il n’a pas même de frères, vous donnerez l’héritage aux frères de son père;
And if he have no brothers, then shall ye give his inheritance unto his father's brothers.
11 Mais s’il n’a pas non plus d’oncles paternels, l’héritage sera donné à ceux qui lui sont plus proches; et ce sera pour les enfants d’Israël une chose sainte par une loi perpétuelle, comme a ordonné le Seigneur à Moïse.
And if his father have no brothers, then shall ye give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall inherit it; and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of justice, as the Lord hath commanded Moses.
12 Le Seigneur dit aussi à Moïse: Monte sur cette montagne d’Abarim, et contemple de là la terre, que je dois donner aux enfants d’Israël;
And the Lord said unto Moses, Go thou up unto this mount of 'Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13 Et lorsque tu l’auras vue, tu iras, toi aussi, vers ton peuple, comme y est allé ton frère Aaron;
And when thou hast seen it, then shalt thou also be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother hath been gathered.
14 Parce que vous m’avez offensé dans le désert de Sin, à la contradiction de la multitude, et vous n’avez pas voulu me sanctifier devant elle, près des eaux; ce sont les eaux de contradiction à Cadès du désert de Sin.
Because ye rebelled against my order in the desert of Zin, at the quarreling of the congregation, to sanctify me through the waters before their eyes: these are the waters of Meribah in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin.
15 Moïse lui répondit:
And Moses spoke unto the Lord, saying,
16 Que le Seigneur Dieu des esprits de toute chair choisisse un homme qui soit au-dessus de cette multitude,
Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,
17 Et qui puisse sortir et entrer devant eux, les faire sortir ou les faire entrer; afin que le peuple du Seigneur ne soit pas comme le troupeau sans pasteur.
Who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as a flock which have no shepherd.
18 Or, le Seigneur lui dit: Prends Josué, fils de Nun, homme dans lequel est mon Esprit, et pose ta main sur lui.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Take to thyself Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom there is a spirit, and thou shalt lay thy hand upon him;
19 Il se tiendra devant Eléazar, le prêtre, et toute la multitude;
And thou shalt cause him to stand before Elazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and thou shalt give him a charge before their eyes.
20 Et tu lui donneras des préceptes à la vue de tous, et une partie de ta gloire, afin que toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël l’écoute.
And thou shalt put some of thy greatness upon him; in order that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
21 S’il faut entreprendre quelque chose, Eléazar, le prêtre, consultera le Seigneur pour lui. À sa parole, Josué sortira et entrera, et tous les enfants d’Israël avec lui, et le reste de la multitude.
And before Elazar the priest shall he stand, and he shall ask of him after the judgment of the Urim before the Lord: at his direction shall they go out, and at his direction shall they come in, he, and all the children of Israel with him, and all the congregation.
22 Moïse fit comme avait ordonné le Seigneur. Ainsi, lorsqu’il eut pris Josué, il le présenta devant Eléazar, le prêtre, et toute la foule du peuple.
And Moses did, as the Lord had commanded him; and he took Joshua, and caused him to stand before Elazar the priest, and before all the congregation;
23 Et, les mains imposées sur sa tête, il déclara tout ce qu’avait commandé le Seigneur.
And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge: as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.
