1 Alors Balaam dit à Balac: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels et prépare autant de veaux, et des béliers en même nombre.

And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.'

2 Et, lorsqu’il eut fait selon la parole de Balaam, ils placèrent ensemble un veau et un bélier sur l’autel.

And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

3 Et Balaam dit à Balac: Tiens-toi un peu auprès de ton holocauste, jusqu’à ce que j’aille voir si par hasard le Seigneur se présentera à moi; et tout ce qu’il me commandera, je te le dirai.

And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go; peradventure the LORD will come to meet me; and whatsoever He showeth me I will tell thee.' And he went to a bare height.

4 Et, s’en étant allé promptement, le Seigneur se présenta. Et Balaam lui ayant parlé: J’ai dressé, dit-il, sept autels, et j’ai placé un veau et un bélier par-dessus.

And God met Balaam; and he said unto Him: 'I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.'

5 Mais le Seigneur lui mit une parole dans la bouche, et dit: Retourne vers Balac et tu lui diras ces choses.

And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.'

6 Revenu, il trouva Balac se tenant auprès de son holocauste, ainsi que tous les princes des Moabites;

And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

7 Et employant sa parabole, il dit: C’est d’Aram que m’a fait venir Balac, roi des Moabites, c’est des montagnes d’orient: Viens, a-t-il dit, et maudis Jacob; hâte-toi et déteste Israël.

And he took up his parable, and said: From Aram Balak bringeth me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East: 'Come, curse me Jacob, and come, execrate Israel.'

8 Comment maudirais-je celui que Dieu n’a point maudit? Comment détesterais-je celui que le Seigneur ne déteste point?

How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? And how shall I execrate, whom the LORD hath not execrated?

9 Des rochers les plus élevés je le verrai, et des collines je le considérerai. Ce peuple habitera seul, et il ne sera pas compté parmi les nations.

For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, it is a people that shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

10 Qui pourra compter la poussière de Jacob et connaître le nombre de la lignée d’Israël? Meure mon âme de la mort des justes, et que ma fin soit semblable à la leur.

Who hath counted the dust of Jacob, or numbered the stock of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let mine end be like his!

11 Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Qu’est-ce que tu fais? C’est pour maudire mes ennemis que je t’ai appelé, et au contraire tu les bénis.

And Balak said unto Balaam: 'What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.'

12 Balaam lui répondit Est-ce que je puis dire autre chose que ce qu’a commandé le Seigneur?

And he answered and said: 'Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD putteth in my mouth?'

13 Balac reprit donc: Viens avec moi dans un autre lieu, d’où tu verras une partie d’Israël, et tu ne pourras le voir tout entier; de là maudis-le.

And Balak said unto him: 'Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them; thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all; and curse me them from thence.'

14 Et lorsqu’il l’eut conduit dans un lieu très élevé, sur le sommet de la montagne de Phasga, Balaam bâtit sept autels, et, un veau et un bélier placés par-dessus chacun deux,

And he took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

15 Il dit à Balac: Tiens-toi ici auprès de ton holocauste, jusqu’à ce que j’aille à la rencontre du Seigneur.

And he said unto Balak: 'Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I go toward a meeting yonder.'

16 Or, lorsque le Seigneur se fut présenté à lui, et qu’il lui eut mis une parole dans la bouche, il dit: Retourne vers Balac, et tu lui diras ces choses.

And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus shalt thou speak.'

17 Revenu, il le trouva se tenant auprès de son holocauste, ainsi que les princes des Moabites avec lui. Balac lui demanda: Qu’a dit le Seigneur?

And he came to him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him: 'What hath the LORD spoken?'

18 Or, Balaam employant sa parabole, dit: Lève-toi, Balac, et prête l’oreille; écoute, fils de Séphor:

And he took up his parable, and said: Arise, Balak, and hear; give ear unto me, thou son of Zippor:

19 Dieu n’est pas comme un homme, pour qu’il mente, ou comme le fils d’un homme, pour qu’il change. Ainsi, il a dit, et il ne fera pas? il a parlé, et il n’accomplira pas?

God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: when He hath said, will He not do it? or when He hath spoken, will He not make it good?

20 J’ai été amené pour bénir, et je ne puis détourner la bénédiction.

Behold, I am bidden to bless; and when He hath blessed, I cannot call it back.

21 Il n’y a point d’idole en Jacob, et on ne voit point de simulacre en Israël. Le Seigneur son Dieu est avec lui, et le chant de la victoire du roi en lui.

None hath beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath one seen perverseness in Israel; the LORD his God is with him, and the shouting for the King is among them.

22 Dieu l’a retiré de l’Egypte; sa force est semblable à celle d’un rhinocéros.

God who brought them forth out of Egypt is for them like the lofty horns of the wild-ox.

23 Il n’y a point d’augure en Jacob, ni de divination en Israël. On dira en son temps à Jacob et à Israël ce que Dieu a fait.

For there is no enchantment with Jacob, neither is there any divination with Israel; now is it said of Jacob and of Israel: 'What hath God wrought!'

24 Voilà qu’un peuple se lèvera comme une lionne, et il se dressera comme un lion: il ne se reposera pas jusqu’à ce qu’il dévore une proie, et qu’il boive le sang de ceux qu’il aura tués.

Behold a people that riseth up as a lioness, and as a lion doth he lift himself up; he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

25 Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Ne le maudis, ni ne le bénis.

And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.'

26 Et celui-ci répondit: Ne t’ai-je pas dit que tout ce que Dieu commanderait, je le ferais?

But Balaam answered and said unto Balak: 'Told not I thee, saying: All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?'

27 Alors Balac lui dit: Viens, et je te conduirai dans un autre lieu, pour voir si par hasard il plairait à Dieu que tu les maudisses de là.

And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Come now, I will take thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.'

28 Et, lorsqu’il l’eût conduit sur le sommet de la montagne de Phogor, qui regarde le désert,

And Balak took Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh down upon the desert.

29 Balaam lui dit: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et prépare autant de veaux, et des béliers en même nombre.

And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.'

30 Balac fit comme Balaam avait dit: il plaça un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel.

And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.
