1 Le Seigneur parla encore à Moïse, disant:
And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
2 Parle aux enfants d’Israël, et prends d’eux des verges, une à une, selon leur parenté, de tous les princes des tribus, douze verges; et tu écriras le nom de chacun d’eux sur sa verge:
Speak unto the children of Israel, and take from them one staff each for a family division, from all their princes, according to their family divisions, twelve staves: the name of each man shalt thou write upon his staff.
3 Mais le nom d’Aaron sera dans la tribu de Lévi, et chaque verge contiendra séparément toutes les familles;
And the name of Aaron shalt thou write upon the staff of Levi; for there shall be but one staff for the head of their family division.
4 Tu les déposeras dans le tabernacle d’alliance, devant le témoignage, où je te parlerai.
And thou shalt lay them down in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I usually meet with you.
5 Celui d’entre eux que j’aurai choisi, c’est celui dont la verge fleurira: j’arrêterai ainsi les plaintes des enfants d’Israël qui les font murmurer contre vous.
And it shall come to pass, that the staff of the man whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will allay from around me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.
6 Et Moïse parla aux enfants d’Israël; et tous les princes lui donnèrent des verges, une par chaque tribu: ainsi il y eut douze verges sans la verge d’Aaron.
And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, and all their princes gave him each a staff, one for every prince, according to their family divisions, twelve staves: and the staff of Aaron was among their staves.
7 Moïse les ayant déposées devant le Seigneur, dans le tabernacle du témoignage,
And Moses laid down the staves before the Lord in the tabernacle of the testimony.
8 Et, le Jour suivant, étant revenu, il trouva que la verge d’Aaron dans la famille de Lévi avait germé, et que des bourgeons s’étant développés, il était sorti des fleurs, qui, des feuilles s’étant ouvertes, s’étaient formées en amandes.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that as Moses went into the tabernacle of the testimony, behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had budded; and it brought forth buds, and produced blossoms, and yielded ripe almonds.
9 Moïse donc porta les verges de la présence du Seigneur à tous les enfants d’Israël; ils virent et reçurent chacun leur verge.
And Moses brought out all the staves from before the Lord unto all the children of Israel; and they looked [at them], and took away every one his staff.
10 Or, le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Reporte la verge d’Aaron dans le tabernacle du témoignage, afin qu’elle y soit gardée comme un signe de la rébellion des enfants d’Israël, et que leurs plaintes se taisent devant moi, pour ne pas qu’ils meurent.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Carry back the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept as a token against the children of rebellion, that there may be an end of their murmurings from around me, and they die not.
11 Et Moïse fit, comme avait ordonné le Seigneur.
And Moses did so; as the Lord had commanded him, so did he.
12 Mais les enfants d’Israël dirent à Moïse: Voici que nous sommes consumés et que tous nous périssons.
And the children of Israel said unto Moses, thus, Behold, we perish, we are lost, we are all lost.
13 Quiconque approche du tabernacle du Seigneur, meurt; est-ce jusqu’à une entière extermination, que nous devons être détruits?
Every one that cometh near at all unto the tabernacle of the Lord must die: shall we totally perish?
