Néhémie 5

1 Alors il se fit une grande clameur du peuple et de ses femmes contre leurs frères, les Juifs.

Then there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their countrymen the Jews.

2 Et il y en avait qui disaient: Nos fils et nos filles sont en trop grand nombre; recevons du blé pour le prix que nous en retirerons, mangeons et vivons.

For there were some who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are a great number: let us get grain, so that we may have food for our needs.

3 Et il y en avait qui disaient: Engageons nos champs, nos vignes et nos maisons, et recevons du blé contre la famine.

And there were some who said, We are giving our fields and our vine-gardens and our houses for debt: let us get grain because we are in need.

4 D’autres disaient encore: Empruntons de l’argent pour les tributs du roi, et engageons nos champs et nos vignes.

And there were others who said, We have given up our fields and our vine-gardens to get money for the king's taxes.

5 Et pourtant, comme est la chair de nos frères, ainsi est notre chair, et comme sont leurs fils, de même aussi nos fils. Voilà que nous, nous réduisons nos fils et nos filles en servitude; il y a de nos filles esclaves, et nous n’avons pas de quoi nous puissions les racheter; et quant à nos champs et à nos vignes, des étrangers les possèdent.

But our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen, and our children as their children: and now we are giving our sons and daughters into the hands of others, to be their servants, and some of our daughters are servants even now: and we have no power to put a stop to it; for other men have our fields and our vine-gardens.

6 Et je fus extrêmement irrité quand j’ouïs leur clameur selon ces paroles:

And on hearing their outcry and what they said I was very angry.

7 Et mon cœur réfléchit en moi; je fis des reproches aux grands et aux magistrats, et je leur dis: Exigez-vous l’usure de vos frères? Et je réunis contre eux une grande assemblée,

And after turning it over in my mind, I made a protest to the chiefs and the rulers, and said to them, Every one of you is taking interest from his countryman. And I got together a great meeting of protest.

8 Et je leur dis: Nous avons racheté, comme vous le savez, les Juifs nos frères, qui avaient été vendus aux Gentils, selon que nous l’avons pu; et vous, vous vendrez donc vos frères, et nous les rachèterons? Et ils se turent, et ils ne trouvèrent rien à répondre.

And I said to them, We have given whatever we were able to give, to make our brothers the Jews free, who were servants and prisoners of the nations: and would you now give up your brothers for a price, and are they to become our property? Then they said nothing, answering not a word.

9 Et je leur dis: Ce n’est pas bien ce que vous faites; pourquoi ne marchez-vous pas dans la crainte de notre Dieu, afin qu’il ne nous soit point fait de reproches par les nations qui nous sont ennemies?

And I said, What you are doing is not good: is it not the more necessary for you to go in the fear of our God, because of the shame which the nations may put on us?

10 Pour moi, et mes frères et mes serviteurs, nous avons prêté au grand nombre de l’argent et du blé: soyons unanimes à ne point le redemander, et concédons l’argent étranger qui nous est dû.

Even I and my servants have been taking interest for the money and the grain we have let them have. So now, let us give up this thing.

11 Rendez-leur aujourd’hui leurs champs et leurs vignes, leurs plants d’oliviers et leurs maisons: bien plus, même le centième de l’argent, du blé, du vin et de l’huile que vous avez coutume d’exiger d’eux, donnez-le pour eux.

Give back to them this very day their fields, their vine-gardens, their olive-gardens, and their houses, as well as a hundredth part of the money and the grain and the wine and the oil which you have taken from them.

12 Et ils répondirent: Nous les rendrons, et nous ne leur demanderons rien, et nous ferons ainsi que vous dites. Alors j’appelai les prêtres, et les adjurai de faire selon ce que j’avais dit.

Then they said, We will give them back, and take nothing for them; we will do as you say. Then I sent for the priests and made them take an oath that they would keep this agreement.

13 De plus, je secouai mon vêtement, et je dis: Que Dieu secoue ainsi, hors de sa maison et de ses travaux, tout homme qui n’aura point accompli cette parole; qu’il soit ainsi secoué et dénué de tout. Et toute la multitude dit: Amen. Et ils louèrent Dieu. Le peuple fit donc comme il avait été dit.

And shaking out the folds of my robe, I said, So may God send out from his house and his work every man who does not keep this agreement; even so let him be sent out and made as nothing. And all the meeting of the people said, So be it, and gave praise to the Lord. And the people did as they had said.

14 Or depuis le jour où le roi m’avait ordonné d’être chef dans la terre de Juda, depuis l’an vingt jusqu’à l’an trente-deux du roi Artaxerxès, pendant douze ans, moi et mes frères nous n’avons pas mangé les vivres qui étaient dus aux chefs.

Now from the time when I was made ruler of the people in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year till the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my servants have never taken the food which was the right of the ruler.

15 Mais les premiers chefs qui avaient été avec moi surchargèrent le peuple, et reçurent de lui, en pain, en vin et en argent, quarante sicles chaque jour; et même leurs serviteurs opprimaient le peuple. Mais moi, je n’ai point fait ainsi, à cause de la crainte de Dieu;

But earlier rulers who were before me made the people responsible for their upkeep, and took from them bread and wine at the rate of forty shekels of silver; and even their servants were lords over the people: but I did not do so, because of the fear of God.

16 Bien plus, j’ai travaillé à la réparation du mur, je n’ai pas acheté de champ, et tous mes serviteurs étaient assemblés pour le travail.

And I kept on with the work of this wall, and we got no land for ourselves: and all my servants were helping with the work.

17 Les Juifs aussi et les magistrats, cent cinquante hommes, et ceux qui venaient à nous des nations qui sont autour de nous, étaient à ma table.

And more than this, a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers were guests at my table, in addition to those who came to us from the nations round about us.

18 Or on m’apprêtait tous les jours un bœuf, six béliers choisis, sans compter les volailles; et tous les dix jours je donnais des vins divers, et beaucoup d’autres choses: de plus, je n’ai pas même demandé les vivres dus à ma charge de chef; car le peuple était fort appauvri.

Now the food made ready for one day was one ox and six fat sheep, as well as fowls; and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine: but all the same, I did not take the food to which the ruler had a right, because the people were crushed under a hard yoke.

19 Mon Dieu, souvenez-vous de moi en bien, selon tout ce que j’ai fait à ce peuple.

Keep in mind, O my God, for my good, all I have done for this people.
