Néhémie 13

1 En ce jour-là, on lut dans le volume de Moïse, le peuple écoutant, et on y trouva écrit que les Ammonites et les Moabites ne devaient jamais entrer dans l’assemblée de Dieu.

2 Parce qu’ils ne vinrent point à la rencontre des enfants d’Israël avec du pain et de l’eau, et qu’ils amenèrent contre eux Balaam, pour les maudire; et notre Dieu changea la malédiction en bénédiction.

3 Or il arriva que, lorsqu’ils eurent entendu la loi, ils séparèrent tout étranger d’Israël.

4 Et avant cet événement, Eliasib, le prêtre, avait été préposé sur le trésor de la maison de notre Dieu, et il était allié de Tobie.

5 Il lui fit donc un grand trésor; et là il y en avait qui posaient devant lui les présents, l’encens, les vases, et la dime du blé, du vin et de l’huile, les parts des Lévites, des chantres et des portiers, et les prémices sacerdotales.

7 Et je vins à Jérusalem, et je compris le mal qu’avait fait Eliasib à Tobie, en lui faisant un trésor dans le vestibule de la maison de Dieu.

8 Et le mal me parut très grand; et je jetai au loin les vases de la maison de Tobie hors du trésor;

9 Et j’ordonnai, et l’on purifia les trésors, et j’y reportai les vases de la maison de Dieu, le sacrifice et l’encens.

10 Je connus aussi que les parts des Lévites ne leur avaient point été données, et que chacun des Lévites, des chantres et de ceux qui servaient, avait fui en sa contrée;

11 Et je plaidai la cause contre les magistrats, et je dis: Pourquoi abandonnons-nous la maison de Dieu? Je les rassemblai donc, et les fis demeurer à leur poste.

12 Et tout Juda apportait la dîme du froment, du vin et de l’huile, dans les greniers.

13 Et nous établîmes sur les greniers Sélémias, le prêtre, et Sadoc, le scribe, et Phadaïas d’entre les Lévites; et, auprès d’eux, Hanan, fils de Zachur, fils de Mathanias, parce qu’ils furent reconnus fidèles, et les parts de leurs frères leur furent confiées.

14 Souvenez-vous de moi mon Dieu, pour cela, et n’effacez point mes miséricordes que j’ai faites dans la maison de mon Dieu et dans ses cérémonies.

15 En ces jours-là, je vis en Juda des hommes foulant des pressoirs pendant le sabbat, portant les gerbes, chargeant sur les ânes du vin, des raisins, des figues et toute sorte de fardeaux, et les apportant à Jérusalem au jour du sabbat, et je leur dis expressément de vendre au jour auquel il est permis de vendre.

16 Les Tyriens aussi demeuraient dans la ville, y apportant des poissons et toute espèce d’objets de vente, et ils les vendaient dans les jours du Sabbat aux enfants de Juda dans Jérusalem.

17 Alors je fis des reproches aux grands de Juda, et je leur dis: Quelle est cette chose mauvaise que vous faites? et pourquoi profanez-vous le jour du sabbat?

18 Est-ce que nos pères n’ont pas fait ces choses, et notre Dieu n’a-t-il pas fait venir pour cela tout ce mal sur nous et sur cette ville? Et vous, vous ajoutez le courroux sur Israël en violant le sabbat.

19 Il arriva donc que, lorsque les portes de Jérusalem furent en repos au jour du sabbat, je dis, et on ferma les portes, et j’ordonnai qu’on ne les ouvrît point jusqu’après le sabbat; et je plaçai de mes serviteurs aux portes, afin que personne n’apportât de fardeau au jour du sabbat.

20 Et les marchands, et ceux qui vendaient toute espèce d’objets de vente, demeurèrent hors de Jérusalem une et deux fois.

and to lodge [the] to trade and to sell all sale from outside to/for Jerusalem beat and two

21 Et je leur déclarai, et leur dis: Pourquoi demeurez-vous en face du mur? Si vous faites cela une seconde fois, je mettrai la main sur vous. C’est pourquoi depuis ce temps-là ils ne revinrent point pendant le sabbat.

22 Je dis aussi aux Lévites qu’ils se purifiassent, et qu’ils vinssent pour garder les portes et sanctifier le jour du sabbat. Et pour cela souvenez-vous donc de moi, mon Dieu, et pardonnez-moi selon la multitude de vos miséricordes.

23 Mais même en ces jours-là je vis des Juifs épousant des femmes Azotéennes, Ammonites et Moabites.

24 Et leurs enfants parlaient à demi la langue d’Azot et ne savaient point parler la langue juive, et ils parlaient selon la langue d’un peuple et d’un peuple.

25 Et je leur fis des reproches et les maudis: je frappai aussi des hommes d’entre eux, et leur rasai les cheveux; et je les adjurai en Dieu, de ne point donner leurs filles à leurs fils et de ne point prendre leurs filles pour leurs fils ni pour eux-mêmes, disant:

26 N’est-ce point de cette manière qu’a péché Salomon, roi d’Israël? Et certes parmi les nations qui sont si nombreuses il n’y avait point de roi semblable à lui, et il était chéri de son Dieu, et Dieu l’établit roi sur tout Israël; eh bien, c’est lui que les femmes étrangères entraînèrent dans le péché.

27 Est-ce que nous aussi, désobéissant, nous ferons tout ce mal si grand, que de prévariquer contre notre Dieu, et d’épouser des femmes étrangères?

28 Or entre les fils de Joïada, le fils d’Eliasib, le grand prêtre, était un gendre de Sanaballat, l’Horonite, et je le chassai d’auprès de moi.

29 Gardez un souvenir. Seigneur mon Dieu, contre ceux qui souillent le sacerdoce et le droit sacerdotal et lévitique.

30 Ainsi je les purifiai de tous les étrangers, et j’établis selon leurs rangs, les prêtres et les Lévites, chacun dans son ministère,

31 Et pour l’offrande des bois dans les temps fixés, et pour les prémices. Mon Dieu, souvenez-vous de moi en bien. Amen.
