Nahum 3
1 Malheur, cité de sang, tout entière au mensonge, pleine de brigandages; la rapine ne te quittera pas.
Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies [and] violence; the prey departeth not.
2 Voix du fouet et voix de l’impétuosité de la roue, et du cheval qui frémit, du quadrige brûlant, et du cavalier qui monte;
The crack of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the prancing horses, and of the bounding chariots!
3 Et du glaive brillant, et de la lance étincelante, et de la multitude tuée, et de la ruine cruelle; et les cadavres sont sans fin, et ils tomberont sur leurs corps morts.
The horseman springing up, and the glitter of the sword, and the flash of the spear, and a multitude of slain, and a mass of carcases, and no end of corpses: they stumble over their corpses.
4 À cause de la multitude des fornications de la courtisane, belle et gracieuse, et possédant l’art des maléfices, laquelle a vendu des peuples par ses fornications, et des nations par ses maléfices;
— Because of the multitude of the fornications of the well-favoured harlot, mistress of sorceries, that selleth nations through her fornications, and families through her sorceries,
5 Voici que moi je viens vers toi, dit le Seigneur des armées, et je découvrirai ta honte à ta face, et je montrerai à des nations ta nudité, et à des royaumes ton ignominie.
behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts; and I will uncover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.
6 Et je jetterai sur toi tes abominations, et je te couvrirai d’infamie, et je ferai de toi un exemple.
And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing stock.
7 Et il arrivera que quiconque te verra se retirera de toi, et dira: Elle a été dévastée, Ninive; qui secouera la tête sur toi? où chercherai-je un consolateur pour toi?
And it shall come to pass, [that] all they that see thee shall flee from thee, and shall say, Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?
8 Est-ce que tu es meilleure qu’Alexandrie des peuples, qui habite au milieu des fleuves, environnée d’eaux; dont les richesses sont la mer et les eaux les murs?
Art thou better than No-Amon, that was situate among the rivers, [that had] the waters round about her, whose rampart was the sea, [and] of the sea was her wall?
9 L’Éthiopie était sa force, ainsi que l’Égypte, et il n’y a pas de fin; l’Afrique et la Libye sont venues à ton secours, ô Alexandrie.
Ethiopia was her strength, and Egypt, and it was infinite; Phut and the Libyans were her helpers.
10 Et cependant elle-même a été emmenée en exil et en captivité; ses petits enfants ont été écrasés à l’entrée de toutes les rues; et sur ses hommes illustres on a jeté le sort, et tous ses grands ont été chargés d’entraves.
She too was carried away, she went into captivity: her infants also were dashed in pieces, at the top of all the streets; and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound with chains.
11 Et toi aussi, Ninive, tu seras donc enivrée, et tu seras méprisée; et tu demanderas du secours à un ennemi.
Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid; thou also shalt seek a refuge from the enemy.
12 Toutes tes fortifications seront comme des figuiers avec des figues précoces; s’ils sont secoués, elles tomberont dans la bouche de celui qui les mangera.
All thy strongholds are [like] fig-trees with the first-ripe figs: if they be shaken, they even fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Voilà ton peuple, ce sont des femmes au milieu de toi; les portes de ta terre seront tout ouvertes à tes ennemis; un feu dévorera tes verroux.
Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are [as] women: the gates of thy land are set wide open unto thine enemies; the fire devoureth thy bars.
14 Puise de l’eau, à cause du siège; construis tes fortifications; entre dans l’argile, et foule-la aux pieds; en la mettant en œuvre, fais de la brique.
Draw thee water for the siege, strengthen thy fortresses; go into the clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brick-kiln.
15 Là, un feu te consumera; tu périras par le glaive, il te dévorera comme le bruchus; rassemble-toi comme le bruchus; multiplie-toi comme la sauterelle.
There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off; it shall devour thee like the cankerworm. Make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locust.
16 Tu as fait plus de trafics qu’il n’y a d’étoiles au ciel; le bruchus s’est répandu et envolé.
Thou hast multiplied thy merchants more than the stars of the heavens; the cankerworm spreadeth himself out and flieth away.
17 Tes gardes sont comme des sauterelles, et tes petits enfants comme les sauterelles des sauterelles qui se posent dans les haies dans un jour de froid; le soleil s’est levé, et elles se sont envolées et on ne connaît pas la place où elles ont été,
Thy chosen men are as the locusts, and thy captains as swarms of grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day: when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.
18 Ils se sont endormis, tes pasteurs, ô roi d’Assur, tes princes seront ensevelis dans le sommeil; ton peuple s’est caché dans les montagnes et il n’y a personne qui le rassemble.
Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; thy nobles lie still; thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.
19 Ta blessure n’est pas cachée, sa plaie est très maligne; tous ceux qui ont appris des nouvelles de toi ont frappé des mains à ton sujet; car sur qui ta malice ne s’est-elle pas toujours portée?
There is no healing of thy breach; thy wound is grievous; all that hear the report of thee clap the hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
