Matthieu 3
1 Or, en ces jours-là, vint Jean-Baptiste prêchant dans le désert de Judée,
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 Et disant: Faites pénitence, car le royaume des cieux approche.
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 C’est lui dont a parlé le prophète Isaïe, disant: Voix de quelqu’un qui crie dans le désert: Préparez la voie du Seigneur faites droits ses sentiers.
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4 Or Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau et une ceinture de cuir autour de ses reins; et sa nourriture était des sauterelles et du miel sauvage.
And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Alors accourait à lui Jérusalem, toute la Judée et tout le pays autour du Jourdain;
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region about Jordan,
6 Et ils étaient baptisés par lui dans le Jourdain, confessant leurs péchés.
And were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Or voyant beaucoup de Pharisiens et de Saducéens venant à son baptême, il leur dit: Race de vipères, qui vous a montré à fuir devant la colère qui va venir?
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Faites donc de dignes fruits de pénitence.
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance:
9 Et ne songez pas à dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père; car je vous le dis, Dieu peut, de ces pierres mêmes, susciter des enfants à Abraham.
And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
10 Déjà la cognée a été mise à la racine des arbres. Tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu.
And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 Moi, à la vérité, je vous baptise dans l’eau pour la pénitence; mais celui qui doit venir après moi est plus puissant que moi; et je ne suis pas digne de porter sa chaussure: lui-même vous baptisera dans l’Esprit saint et dans le feu.
I indeed baptize you in water to repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and in fire:
12 Son van est dans sa main, et il nettoyera entièrement son aire: il amassera son blé dans le grenier; mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne peut s’éteindre.
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and gather his wheat into the barn; but he will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 Alors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean pour être baptisé par lui.
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14 Or Jean le détournait, disant: C’est moi qui dois être baptisé par vous, et vous venez à moi!
But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?
15 Mais, répondant, Jésus lui dit: Laisse maintenant, car c’est ainsi qu’il convient que nous accomplissions toute justice. Alors Jean le laissa.
And Jesus answering said to him, Permit it to be so now: for thus it is befitting for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he allowed him.
16 Or ayant été baptisé, Jésus sortit aussitôt de l’eau; et voici que les cieux lui furent ouverts: il vit l’Esprit de Dieu descendant en forme de colombe et venant sur lui.
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up immediately out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 Et voici une voix du ciel disant: Celui-ci est mon fils bien-aimé en qui j’ai mis mes complaisances.
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
