Matthieu 2
1 Lors donc que Jésus fut né en Bethléem de Juda, aux jours du roi Hérode, voilà que des mages vinrent de l’Orient à Jérusalem,
Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying,
2 Disant: Où est celui qui est né roi des Juifs? car nous avons vu son étoile en Orient, et nous sommes venus l’adorer.
Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage.
3 Ayant appris cela, le roi Hérode se troubla, et tout Jérusalem avec lui.
But Herod the king having heard [of it], was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
4 Et assemblant tous les princes des prêtres et les scribes du peuple, il s’enquit d’eux où naîtrait le Christ.
and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born.
5 Or eux lui dirent: À Bethléem de Juda; car il a été ainsi écrit par le prophète:
And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet:
6 Et toi, Bethléem, terre de Juda, tu n’es pas la moindre parmi les principales villes de Juda; car c’est de toi que sortira, le chef qui doit régir Israël mon peuple.
And thou Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel.
7 Alors Hérode, les mages secrètement appelés, s’enquit d’eux avec soin du temps où l’étoile leur était apparue;
Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing;
8 Et, les envoyant à Bethléem, il dit: Allez, informez-vous exactement de l’enfant; et lorsque vous l’aurez trouvé, faites-le-moi savoir, afin que moi aussi j’aille l’adorer.
and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found [him] bring me back word, so that I also may come and do him homage.
9 Ceux-ci donc, après avoir entendu le roi, s’en allèrent; et voilà que l’étoile qu’ils avaient vue en Orient les précédait jusqu’à ce qu’elle vint et s’arrêta au-dessus du lieu où était l’enfant.
And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was.
10 Or, voyant l’étoile, il se réjouirent d’une grande joie.
And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 Et, entrant dans la maison, ils trouvèrent l’enfant avec Marie, sa mère, et, se prosternant, ils l’adorèrent; puis, leurs trésors ouverts, ils lui offrirent des présents, de l’or, de l’encens et de la myrrhe.
And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12 Mais ayant été avertis en songe de ne point retourner vers Hérode, ils revinrent dans leur pays par un autre chemin.
And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
13 Après qu’ils furent partis, voilà qu’un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph pendant son sommeil, et dit: Lève-toi, prends l’enfant et sa mère, fuis en Egypte et restes-y, jusqu’à ce que je te parle; car il arrivera qu’Hérode cherchera l’enfant pour le faire mourir.
Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to [thee] the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it.
14 Joseph, s’étant levé, prit l’enfant et sa mère pendant la nuit et se retira en Egypte;
And, having arisen, he took to [him] the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.
15 Et il s’y tint jusqu’à la mort d’Hérode, afin que fût accomplie cette parole que le Seigneur a dite par le prophète: J’ai rappelé mon fils de l’Egypte.
And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by [the] Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 Alors Hérode, voyant qu’il avait été trompé par les mages, entra en une grande colère, et il envoya tuer tous les enfants qui étaient dans Bethléem et dans tous ses environs, depuis deux ans et au-dessous, selon le temps dont il s’était enquis des mages.
Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which [were] in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi.
17 Ce fut alors que s’accomplit la parole du prophète Jérémie, disant:
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying,
18 Une voix a été entendue dans Rama, des pleurs et des cris déchirants souvent répétés: c’était Rachel pleurant ses fils et ne voulant point se consoler, parce qu’ils ne sont plus.
A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19 Hérode étant mort, voilà qu’un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph pendant son sommeil en Egypte,
But Herod having died, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
20 Disant: Lève-toi, prends l’enfant et sa mère, et va dans la terre d’Israël; car ils sont morts, ceux qui recherchaient la vie de l’enfant.
Arise, take to [thee] the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead.
21 Joseph s’étant levé, prit l’enfant et sa mère et vint dans la terre d’Israël.
And he arose and took to [him] the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel;
22 Mais ayant appris qu’Archélaüs régnait en Judée à la place d’Hérode, son père, il appréhenda d’y aller; et, averti pendant son sommeil, il se retira dans le pays de Galilée.
but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee,
23 Etant donc venu, il habita une ville qui est appelée Nazareth, afin que s’accomplît ce qui a été dit par les prophètes: Il sera appelé Nazaréen.
and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraene.
