Luc 14

1 Il arriva que comme Jésus était entré un jour de sabbat dans la maison d’un chef des pharisiens pour y manger du pain, ceux-ci l’observaient.

One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.

2 Et voilà qu’un homme hydropique était devant lui.

Right there before Him was a man with dropsy.

3 Or prenant la parole, Jésus dit aux docteurs de la loi et aux pharisiens: Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat?

So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”

4 Mais ils gardèrent le silence. Alors Jésus prenant cet homme par la main, le guérit et le renvoya.

But they remained silent. Then Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.

5 Puis, s’adressant à eux, il demanda: Qui de vous, si son âne ou son bœuf tombe dans un puits, ne l’en retire pas aussitôt, même le jour du sabbat?

And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”

6 Et ils ne pouvaient rien répondre à cela.

And they were unable to answer these questions.

7 Il dit encore cette parabole aux conviés, en voyant comment ils choisissaient les premières places à table:

When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, He told them a parable:

8 Lorsque tu seras invité à des noces, ne te mets pas à la première place, de peur que quelqu’un plus considéré que toi n’ait été invité aussi,

“When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited.

9 Et que celui qui t’a invité, toi et lui, ne vienne et ne te dise: Donne cette place à celui-ci; et qu’alors tu n’ailles avec confusion occuper la dernière place.

Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place.

10 Mais lorsque tu seras invité, va te mettre à la dernière place, afin que, quand viendra celui qui t’a convié, il te dise: Mon ami, monte plus haut. Alors ce sera une gloire pour toi devant ceux qui seront à table avec toi:

But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you.

11 Car quiconque s’exalte sera humilié, et quiconque s’humilie sera exalté.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Il disait aussi à celui qui l’avait invité: Lorsque tu donneras à dîner ou à souper, n’appelle ni tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni tes voisins riches, de peur qu’ils ne t’invitent à leur tour, et qu’ils ne te rendent ce qu’ils ont reçu de toi.

Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid.

13 Mais quand tu fais un festin, appelles-y des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux et des aveugles:

But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind,

14 Et tu seras heureux de ce qu’ils n’ont rien à te rendre; car ce te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes.

and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

15 Ce qu’ayant entendu, un de ceux qui étaient à table lui dit: Heureux celui qui mangera du pain dans le royaume de Dieu.

When one of those reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

16 Mais Jésus lui dit: Un homme fit un grand souper, et y appela beaucoup de monde.

But Jesus replied, “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests.

17 Et à l’heure du souper, il envoya son serviteur dire aux conviés de venir, parce que tout était prêt.

When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 Mais ils commencèrent à s’excuser tous ensemble. Le premier lui dit: J’ai acheté une maison de compagne, et il faut que j’aille la voir; je vous prie, excusez-moi.

But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please excuse me.’

19 Un second dit: J’ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs, et je vais les essayer; je vous prie, excusez-moi.

Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 Et un autre dit: J’ai pris une femme, et c’est pourquoi je ne puis venir.

Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come.’

21 Le serviteur étant revenu, rapporta tout ceci à son maître. Alors le père de famille irrité dit à son serviteur: Va vite dans les places et les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres et les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.

The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’

22 Et le serviteur dit: Seigneur, il a été fait comme tu l’as ordonné, et il y a encore de la place.

‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’

23 Et le maître dit au serviteur: Va dans les chemins et le long des haies, et force les gens d’entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.

So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.

24 Mais je vous le dis, aucun de ceux qui avaient été invités, ne goûtera de mon souper.

For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will taste my banquet.’”

25 Or, comme une grande foule de peuple allait avec lui, il se tourna vers eux et leur dit:

Large crowds were now traveling with Jesus, and He turned and said to them,

26 Si quelqu’un vient à moi, et ne hait point son père et sa mère, sa femme et ses fils, ses frères et ses sœurs, et même sa propre âme, il ne peut être mon disciple.

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.

27 Et qui ne porte point sa croix et ne me suit point, ne peut être mon disciple.

And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.

28 Car qui d’entre vous, voulant bâtir une tour, ne s’assied pas auparavant, pour calculer les dépenses qui sont nécessaires, et s’il a de quoi l’achever?

Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?

29 De peur qu’après avoir posé les fondements, et n’avoir pu l’achever, ceux qui le verront ne se mettent à se moquer de lui,

Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,

30 Disant: Cet homme a commencé à bâtir; et il n’a pu achever.

saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’

31 Ou, quel est le roi qui, devant aller faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne s’assied pas auparavant, et ne songe pas en lui-même, s’il peut, avec dix mille hommes, aller à la rencontre de celui qui vient contre lui avec vingt mille?

Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

32 Autrement, tandis que celui-ci est encore loin, envoyant une ambassade, il lui fait des propositions de paix.

And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.

33 Ainsi donc, quiconque d’entre vous ne renonce point à tout ce qu’il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.

In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.

34 Le sel est bon. Mais si le sel perd sa vertu, avec quoi l’assaisonnera-t-on?

Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?

35 Il n’est plus propre, ni pour la terre, ni pour le fumier; mais il sera jeté dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.

It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
