Juges 9
1 Or, Abimélech, fils de Jérobaal, s’en alla à Sichem vers les frères de sa mère, et il leur parla, ainsi qu’à toute la parenté de la maison du père de sa mère, disant:
And he went Abimelech [the] son of Jerub-Baal Shechem towards to [the] brothers of mother his and he spoke to them and to all [the] clan of [the] house of [the] father of mother his saying.
2 Dites à tous les habitants de Sichem: Lequel est le meilleur pour vous, que soixante-dix hommes, tous fils de Jérobaal, vous commandent, ou qu’un seul homme vous commande? et considérez en même temps que je suis votre os et votre chair.
Speak please in [the] ears of all [the] citizens of Shechem what? [is] good for you ¿ to rule over you seventy man all [the] sons of Jerub-Baal or? to rule over you a man one and you will remember that [am] bone your and flesh your I.
3 Et les frères de sa mère rapportèrent à son sujet toutes ces paroles aux hommes de Sichem, et ils firent pencher leur cœur pour Abimélech, disant: C’est notre frère.
And they spoke [the] brothers of mother his on him in [the] ears of all [the] citizens of Shechem all the words these and it turned aside heart their after Abimelech for they said [is] brother our he.
4 Et ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix sicles pesant d’argent du temple de Baalberith. Abimélech réunit à lui avec cet argent des hommes misérables et vagabonds; et ils le suivirent.
And they gave to him seventy silver (from [the] house of Baal-*L(abh)*) Berith and he hired for them Abimelech men unprincipled and undisciplined and they went after him.
5 Alors il vint dans la maison de son père à Ephra, et il tua ses frères, fils de Jérobaal, soixante-dix hommes, sur une seule pierre: mais il resta Joatham, le fils de Jérobaal le plus petit, et il fut caché.
And he went [the] house of father his Ophrah towards and he killed brothers his [the] sons of Jerub-Baal (seventy *L(abh)*) man on stone one and he was left Jotham [the] son of Jerub-Baal young for he hid himself.
6 Or, tous les hommes de Sichem s’étant assemblés, et toutes les familles de la ville de Mello, ils allèrent, et établirent roi Abimélech près du chêne qui était à Sichem.
And they gathered all [the] citizens of Shechem and all Beth Millo and they went and they made king Abimelech to king near [the] great tree set up which [was] in Shechem.
7 Lorsque cela fut annoncé à Joatham, il alla, et se tint au sommet de la montagne de Garizim, et, la voix élevée, il cria et dit: Écoutez-moi, hommes de Sichem, et qu’ainsi Dieu vous entende.
And people told to Jotham and he went and he stood on [the] top of [the] mountain of Gerizim and he lifted up voice his and he called out and he said to them listen to me O citizens of Shechem so he may listen to you God.
8 Les arbres allèrent pour oindre et établir sur eux un roi, et ils dirent à l’olivier: Commande-nous.
Certainly they went the trees to anoint over them a king and they said to the olive tree (reign! *Q(k)*) over us.
9 L’olivier leur répondit: Est-ce que je peux abandonner mon huile dont les dieux et les hommes se servent, et venir pour être promu, parmi les arbres?
And it said to them the olive tree ¿ will I cease fatness my which by me people honor gods and men and will I go to sway over the trees.
10 Les arbres dirent ensuite au figuier: Viens, et règne sur nous.
And they said the trees to the fig tree come you reign over us.
11 Le figuier leur répondit: Est-ce que je puis abandonner ma douceur et mes fruits très suaves, et aller pour être promu parmi tous les autres arbres?
And it said to them the fig tree ¿ will I cease sweetness my and fruit my good and will I go to sway over the trees.
12 Alors les arbres dirent à la vigne: Viens, et commande-nous.
And they said the trees to the vine come you (reign *Q(k)*) over us.
13 La vigne leur répondit: Est-ce que je puis abandonner mon vin, qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, et être promu parmi tous les autres arbres?
And it said to them the vine ¿ will I cease new wine my which makes glad gods and men and will I go to sway over the trees.
14 Et tous les arbres dirent au buisson: Viens, et règne sur nous.
And they said all the trees to the thorn bush come you reign over us.
15 Le buisson leur répondit: Si vraiment vous me constituez votre roi, venez et reposez-vous sous mon ombre; mais si vous ne voulez pas, qu’un feu sorte du buisson, et qu’il dévore les cèdres du Liban.
And it said the thorn bush to the trees if in truth you [are] anointing me to king over you come take refuge in shade my and if not let it go out a fire from the thorn bush and let it consume [the] cedars of Lebanon.
16 Maintenant donc, est-ce justement et sans péché que vous avez constitué sur vous Abimélech roi? avez-vous bien agi envers Jérobaal et envers sa maison? et avez-vous payé de retour les bienfaits de celui qui a combattu pour vous,
And now if in faithfulness and in integrity you have acted and you have made king Abimelech and if good you have done with Jerub-Baal and with house his and if according to [the] dealing of hands his you have done to him.
17 Qui a livré son âme aux périls, pour vous délivrer de la main de Madian,
That he fought father my on you and he threw life his from in front and he delivered you from [the] hand of Midian.
18 Vous qui maintenant venez de vous élever contre la maison de mon père, qui avez tué ses fils, soixante-dix hommes sur une seule pierre, et constitué roi sur les habitants de Sichem, Abimélech, fils de sa servante, parce qu’il est votre frère?
And you you have risen up on [the] house of father my this day and you have killed sons his seventy man on stone one and you have made king Abimelech [the] son of female slave his over [the] citizens of Shechem for [is] brother your he.
19 Si donc, c’est justement et sans péché, que vous avez agi envers Jérobaal et sa maison, réjouissez-vous aujourd’hui en Abimélech, et que lui se réjouisse en vous.
And if in faithfulness and in integrity you have acted with Jerub-Baal and with house his the day this rejoice in Abimelech so he may rejoice also he in you.
20 Mais si c’est méchamment, qu’un feu sorte de lui, qu’il consume les habitants de Sichem et la ville de Mello; qu’un feu sorte des hommes de Sichem et de la ville de Mello, et qu’il dévore Abimélech.
And if not let it go out a fire from Abimelech and let it consume [the] citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo and let it go out a fire from [the] citizens of Shechem and from Beth Millo and let it consume Abimelech.
21 Lorsqu’il eut dit ces choses, il s’enfuit et s’en alla à Béra; et il habita là par la crainte d’Abimélech son frère.
And he fled Jotham and he ran away and he went Beer towards and he dwelt there [away] from before Abimelech brother his.
22 C’est pourquoi Abimélech régna sur Israël pendant trois ans.
And he ruled Abimelech over Israel three years.
23 Mais le Seigneur envoya un esprit très mauvais entre Abimélech et les habitants de Sichem, qui commencèrent à le délester,
And he sent God a spirit evil between Abimelech and between [the] citizens of Shechem and they dealt treacherously [the] citizens of Shechem with Abimelech.
24 Et à rejeter le crime du meurtre des soixante-dix fils de Jérobaal, et l’effusion de leur sang sur Abimélech leur frère et sur tous les autres princes de Sichem, qui l’avaient aidé.
To come [the] violence of seventy [the] sons of Jerub-Baal and blood their to put on Abimelech brother their who he killed them and on [the] citizens of Shechem who they strengthened hands his to kill brothers his.
25 Ils lui dressèrent donc des embûches au sommet des montagnes; et pendant qu’ils attendaient son arrivée, ils exerçaient des brigandages, faisant du butin sur les passants. Et on l’annonça à Abimélech.
And they set to him [the] citizens of Shechem ambushers on [the] tops of the mountains and they robbed every [one] who he passed by on them on the road and it was told to Abimelech.
26 Cependant Gaal. fils d’Obed, vint avec ses frères et passa à Sichem. À son arrivée, les habitants de Sichem rassurés,
And he came Gaal [the] son of Ebed and brothers his and they passed on in Shechem and they trusted in him [the] citizens of Shechem.
27 Sortirent dans les champs, ravageant les vignes, et foulant aux pieds les raisins; puis, des chœurs de chantants formés, ils entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu, et, au milieu des mets et des coupes, ils maudissaient Abimélech,
And they went out the field and they gathered grapes vineyards their and they trod [them] and they made rejoicings and they went [the] house of god their and they ate and they drank and they cursed Abimelech.
28 Gaal, fils d’Obed, criant: Qui est Abimélech, et quelle est Sichem, pour que nous le servions? N’est-il pas le fils de Jérobaal, et n’a-t-il pas constitué Zébul, son serviteur, prince sur les hommes d’Hémor, père de Sichem? Pourquoi donc le servirions-nous?
And he said - Gaal [the] son of Ebed who? [is] Abimelech and who? [is] Shechem that we will serve him ¿ not [is he] [the] son of Jerub-Baal and [is] Zebul? deputy his serve [the] men of Hamor [the] father of Shechem and why? will we serve him we.
29 Plût à Dieu que quelqu’un mît ce peuple sous ma main, pour que j’enlevasse du monde Abimélech! Et on dit à Abimélech: Assemble une multitude de troupes, et viens.
And who? will he give the people this in hand my and I will remove Abimelech and he said of Abimelech make numerous army your and come out!
30 Car Zébul prince de la ville, ayant entendu les discours de Gaal, fils d’Obed, fut très irrité,
And he heard Zebul [the] official of the city [the] words of Gaal [the] son of Ebed and it burned anger his.
31 Et il envoya en cachette vers Abimélech, disant: Voilà, Gaal, fils d’Obed, est venu à Sichem avec ses frères, et ils attaquent la ville contre toi.
And he sent messengers to Abimelech in treachery saying here! Gaal [the] son of Ebed and brothers his [are] coming Shechem towards and here they [are] shutting up the city on you.
32 C’est pourquoi lève-toi pendant la nuit avec le peuple qui est avec toi, et cache-toi dans la campagne;
And therefore arise night you and the people which [is] with you and lie in wait in the field.
33 Et de grand matin, le soleil se levant, fonds sur la ville; or, lorsqu’il sortira avec son peuple contre toi, fais-lui ce que tu pourras.
And it will be in the morning when rises the sun you will rise early and you will make a raid on the city and there! he and the people which [is] with him [are] going out against you and you will do to him just as it will find hand your.
34 C’est pourquoi Abimélech se leva avec toute son armée pendant la nuit, et tendit des embûches près de Sichem, en quatre endroits.
And he arose Abimelech and all the people which [was] with him night and they lay in wait on Shechem four companies.
35 Or, Gaal, fils d’Obed, sortit, et se tint à l’entrée de la porte de la ville. Mais Abimélech se leva, et toute son armée avec lui, du lieu de l’embuscade.
And he went out Gaal [the] son of Ebed and he stood [the] entrance of [the] gate of the city and he arose Abimelech and the people which [was] with him from the ambush.
36 Et lorsque Gaal eut vu ce peuple, il dit à Zébul: Voici une multitude qui descend des montagnes. Zébul lui répondit: Tu vois les ombres des montagnes comme des têtes d’hommes, et tu es trompé par cette illusion.
And he saw Gaal the people and he said to Zebul there! a people [is] coming down from [the] tops of the mountains and he said to him Zebul [the] shadow of the mountains you [are] seeing like men.
37 Et de nouveau Gaal dit: Voici un peuple qui descend des hauteurs de la terre, et un seul bataillon vient par la voie qui regarde le chêne.
And he repeated again Gaal to speak and he said there! a people [are] coming down from with [the] center of the land and a company one [is] coming from [the] direction of [the] great tree of [the] soothsayer.
38 Zébul lui répondit: Où est maintenant ta bouche avec laquelle tu disais: Qui est Abimélech, pour que nous le servions? N’est-ce pas ce peuple que tu méprisais? Sors et combats contre lui.
And he said to him Zebul where? then [is] mouth your O [you] who you said who? [is] Abimelech that we will serve him ¿ not [is] this the people which you rejected it go out please now and fight against him.
39 Gaal s’en alla donc, le peuple de Sichem le regardant, et il combattit contre Abimélech,
And he went out Gaal before [the] citizens of Shechem and he fought against Abimelech.
40 Qui le poursuivit pendant qu’il fuyait et le chassa dans la ville; et nombre des siens succombèrent jusqu’à la porte de la ville.
And he pursued him Abimelech and he fled from before him and they fell [those] fatally wounded many to [the] entrance of the gate.
41 Et Abimélech s’arrêta à Ruma; mais Zébul chassa Gaal et ses gens de la ville, il ne souffrit pas qu’ils y demeurassent.
And he dwelt Abimelech at Arumah and he drove out Zebul Gaal and brothers his from dwelling at Shechem.
42 Or le jour suivant le peuple sortit dans la campagne. Lorsqu’on l’eut annoncé à Abimélech
And it was from [the] next day and it went out the people the field and people told to Abimelech.
43 Il prit son armée et la divisa en trois corps, tendant des embûches dans les champs. Et voyant que le peuple sortait de la ville, il se leva et fondit sur eux
And he took the people and he divided them into three companies and he lay in wait in the field and he saw and there! the people [was] going out from the city and he rose up on them and he struck down them.
44 Avec son bataillon, attaquant et assiégeant la ville; mais les deux autres bataillons poursuivaient les ennemis fuyant ça et là dans la plaine.
And Abimelech and the companies which [were] with him they made a raid and they stood [the] entrance of [the] gate of the city and [the] two the companies they made a raid on all [those] who [were] in the field and they struck down them.
45 Or, pendant tout ce jour-là, Abimélech attaquait la ville qu’il prit, tuant ses habitants et détruisant la ville elle-même, de manière à y semer du sel.
And Abimelech [was] fighting against the city all the day that and he captured the city and the people which [was] in it he killed and he pulled down the city and he sowed it salt.
46 Ce qu’ayant appris ceux qui habitaient dans la tour de Sichem, ils entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu Berith, où ils avaient fait alliance avec lui; et C’est de cette alliance qu’avait reçu son nom le lieu qui était très fortifié.
And they heard all [the] citizens of [the] tower of Shechem and they went into [the] underground chamber of [the] house of El-Berith.
47 Abimélech aussi, apprenant que les hommes de la tour de Sichem s’étaient réunis ensemble,
And it was told to Abimelech that they had gathered together all [the] citizens of [the] tower of Shechem.
48 Monta sur la montagne de Selmon avec tout son peuple, et saisissant la hache il coupa une branche d’arbre, et la mettant sur son épaule il dit aux siens: Ce que vous me voyez faire, faites-le vite.
And he went up Abimelech [the] mountain of Zalmon he and all the people which [was] with him and he took Abimelech the axes in hand his and he cut off a branch of wood and he lifted up it and he put [it] on shoulder his and he said to the people which [was] with him whatever you have seen I have done hurry do like me.
49 Coupant donc à l’envi des branches d’arbres, ils suivaient leur chef; et environnant la forteresse, ils l’incendièrent; et de cette manière il arriva que par la fumée et par le feu il périt mille personnes, tant hommes que femmes, qui demeuraient dans la tour de Sichem.
And they cut off also all the people everyone own branch his and they went after Abimelech and they put [them] over the underground chamber and they set on fire over them the underground chamber with fire and they died also all [the] men of [the] tower of Shechem about a thousand man and woman.
50 Ensuite Abimélech, partant de là, vint à la ville de Thébès, qu’investissant, il assiégeait avec son armée.
And he went Abimelech to Thebez and he encamped at Thebez and he captured it.
51 Or, il y avait au milieu de la ville une tour élevée, dans laquelle s’étaient réfugiés ensemble les hommes et les femmes et tous les princes de la ville, la porte étant bien fermée, et ils se tenaient sur le toit de la tour, derrière les parapets.
And a tower of strength it was in [the] middle of the city and they fled there towards all the men and the women and all [the] citizens of the city and they shut [the] door behind them and they went up on [the] roof of the tower.
52 Et Abimélech, s’avançant près de la tour, combattait vaillamment; et, s’approchant de la porte, il s’efforçait d’y mettre le feu.
And he came Abimelech to the tower and he fought against it and he drew near to [the] entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 Et voilà qu’une femme, jetant d’en haut un morceau de meule, frappa la tête d’Abimélech et brisa son crâne.
And she threw a woman one a mill-stone of an upper mill-stone on [the] head of Abimelech and it crushed skull his.
54 Il appela aussitôt son écuyer, et il lui dit: Tire ton glaive, et frappe-moi, de peur qu’on ne dise que c’est par une femme que j’ai été tué. L’écuyer, exécutant ses ordres, le tua.
And he called quickly to the young man - [who] carried armor his and he said to him draw sword your and kill me lest people should say of me a woman she killed him and he pierced through him young man his and he died.
55 Abimélech mort, tous ceux d’Israël qui étaient avec lui retournèrent en leurs demeures.
And they saw [the] man of Israel that he was dead Abimelech and they went everyone to own place his.
56 Ainsi Dieu rendit le mal qu’Abimélech avait commis contre son père, ayant tué ses soixante-dix frères.
And he repaid God [the] evil of Abimelech which he had done to father his by killing seventy brothers his.
57 Aux Sichémites aussi, ce qu’ils avaient fait fut rendu, et la malédiction de Joatham, fils de Jérobaal, vint sur eux.
And all [the] evil of [the] men of Shechem he repaid God on head their and it came to them [the] curse of Jotham [the] son of Jerub-Baal.
