Juges 3
1 Voici les nations que le Seigneur laissa, pour instruire par elles Israël et tous ceux qui ne connaissaient pas les guerres des Chananéens;
Now, these, are the nations which Yahweh left, that he might, by them, put Israel to the proof, —all who had not known any of the wars of Canaan;
2 Afin que dans la suite leurs enfants apprissent à combattre contre les ennemis, et qu’ils s’accoutumassent à livrer bataille:
that the generations of the sons of Israel might certainly get to know, by being taught to make war, —such, at least, as aforetime knew nothing thereof: —
3 Les cinq satrapes des Philistins, tous les Chananéens, les Sidoniens et les Hévéens qui habitaient sur la mont Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’entrée d’Emath.
five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites dwelling in Mount Lebanon, —from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entering in of Hamath.
4 Or, il les laissa, afin que par eux il éprouvât Israël, en voyant s’il écouterait les commandements du Seigneur, qu’il avait donnés à leurs pères par l’entremise de Moïse, ou non.
So then [these] were [left], that, by them, he might put Israel to the proof, —to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Yahweh which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 C’est pourquoi les enfants d’Israël habitèrent au milieu du Chananéen, de l’Héthéen, de l’Amorrhéen, du Phérézéen, de l’Hévéen et du Jébuséen;
And thus, the sons of Israel, dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, —the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites;
6 Ils prirent pour femmes, leurs filles, et ils donnèrent eux-mêmes leurs propres filles à leurs fils, et ils servirent leurs dieux.
and took their daughters to be their wives, their own daughters moreover, gave they unto their sons, and they served their gods.
7 Ainsi, ils firent le mal en la présence du Seigneur, et ils oublièrent leur Dieu, servant les Baalim et les Astaroth.
Thus did the sons of Israel the thing that was wicked in the sight of Yahweh, and forgat Yahweh their God, —and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
8 Or, irrité contre Israël, le Seigneur les livra aux mains de Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et ils le servirent pendant huit ans.
Then kindled the anger of Yahweh upon Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, —and the sons of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim, eight years.
9 Et ils crièrent au Seigneur, qui leur suscita un sauveur qui les délivra, Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère puîné de Caleb.
And the sons of Israel made outcry unto Yahweh, so Yahweh raised up a saviour unto the sons of Israel, who saved them, —even Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 Et l’esprit du Seigneur fut en lui, et il jugea Israël. Il s’en alla au combat, et le Seigneur livra en ses mains Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Syrie, et il le subjugua.
And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war, and Yahweh delivered into his hand, Chushan-rishathaim, king of Syria, —and his hand prevailed over Chushan-rishathaim.
11 Et le pays se reposa durant quarante ans, et Othoniel, fils de Cénez, mourut.
And the land had rest forty years, —and Othniel son of Kenaz, died.
12 Mais les enfants d’Israël recommencèrent à faire le mal en la présence du Seigneur, qui fortifia contre eux Eglon, roi de Moab, parce qu’ils firent le mal en sa présence.
And the sons of Israel again did the thing that was wicked, in the sight of Yahweh, —and Yahweh emboldened Eglon, king of Moab, against Israel, because they did the thing that was wicked in the sight of Yahweh;
13 Et il joignit à lui les enfants d’Ammon et d’Amalec; et il alla et battit Israël, et il se rendit maître de la ville des Palmes.
and he gathered unto him, the sons of Ammon, and Amalek, —and came and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of palm-trees.
14 Et les enfants d’Israël servirent Eglon, roi de Moab, pendant dix-huit ans;
So the sons of Israel served Eglon king of Moab, eighteen years.
15 Et après cela ils crièrent au Seigneur, qui leur suscita un sauveur du nom d’Aod, fils de Géra, fils de Jémini, qui se servait des deux mains comme de la droite. Or, les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent par lui des présents à Eglon, roi de Moab.
And the sons of Israel made outcry unto Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up unto them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man left-handed, —and the sons of Israel sent, by his hand, a present, unto Eglon king of Moab.
16 Aod se fit un glaive à deux tranchants, qui avait au milieu une garde de la longueur de la paume de la main, et il le ceignit sous son sayon, sur la cuisse droite.
So Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, —and girded it under his raiment, upon his right thigh.
17 Et il offrit les présents à Eglon, roi de Moab. Or, Eglon était extrêmement gros.
So he offered the present unto Eglon, king of Moab, —now, Eglon, was an exceedingly fat man.
18 Lors donc qu’il lui eut offert les présents, il suivit ses compagnons qui étaient venus avec lui.
And so it was, when he had made an end of offering the present, that he sent away the people who had been bearing the present;
19 Puis, revenu de Galgala, où étaient les idoles, il dit au roi: J’ai une parole secrète pour vous, ô roi. Et le roi commanda le silence, et tous ceux qui étaient autour de lui étant sortis,
but, he himself, turned back from the images that were by Gilgal, and said, A secret word, have I, unto thee, O king! And he said—Silence! Thereupon went out from his presence all who had been standing near him.
20 Aod s’approcha de lui: or, il était assis dans sa chambre d’été, seul; Aod lui dit donc: J’ai une parole de Dieu pour vous. Le roi aussitôt se leva de son trône.
And, Ehud, came in unto him, he, having been sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself, alone, and Ehud said, A divine word, have I, unto thee. So he arose from off his seat.
21 Et Aod étendit la main gauche, et prit le glaive de dessus sa cuisse droite, et l’enfonça dans son ventre,
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from off his right thigh, —and thrust it into his body;
22 Si fortement, que la poignée suivit le fer dans la blessure, et s’y trouva très resserrée par la graisse extrêmement épaisse. Il ne retira donc point le glaive, mais il le laissa dans le corps, comme il était, lorsqu’il eut porté le coup: et aussitôt les excréments renfermés dans le ventre s’échappèrent par les conduits naturels.
and, the handle also, went in after the blade, and the flesh closed upon the blade, for he withdrew not the sword out of his body, —and he came out into the ante-chamber.
23 Or, Aod, ayant fermé avec le plus grand soin les portes de la chambre, et y ayant mis les verrous,
And, when Ehud came out into the porch, he closed the doors of the parlour upon him, and bolted them.
24 Sortit par le derrière. Cependant les serviteurs du roi étant venus, virent les portes de la chambre fermées, et ils dirent: Peut-être satisfait-il à un besoin dans la chambre d’été.
When, he, had come out, his servants, went in, and looked, and lo! the doors of the parlour were bolted, —so they said, Surely he covereth his feet, in the summer chamber.
25 Et ayant attendu longtemps jusqu’à en être troublés, et voyant que personne n’ouvrait, ils prirent la clef; et ouvrant, ils trouvèrent leur maître étendu sur la terre, mort.
But, though they tarried a long time, yet lo! he opened not the doors of the parlour, —so they took the key, and opened [them], when lo! their lord, fallen to the ground dead.
26 Mais Aod, pendant que ceux-ci étaient dans le trouble, s’enfuit et traversa le lieu des idoles, d’où il était revenu. Il vint à Séirath;
But, Ehud, escaped while they delayed, —yea, he, passed the images, and escaped into Seirah.
27 Et aussitôt il sonna de la trompette sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et les enfants d’Israël descendirent avec lui, marchant lui-même en tête.
And so it was, when he came, that he blew with a horn, throughout the hill country of Ephraim, —and the sons of Israel came down with him, out of the hill country, he, being before them.
28 Il leur dit: Suivez-moi; car le Seigneur a livré nos ennemis, les Moabites, en nos mains. Et ils descendirent après lui, et ils occupèrent les gués du Jourdain, par lesquels on va à Moab; et ils ne laissèrent passer personne.
And he said unto them—Come down after me, for Yahweh hath delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand. So they came down after him, and captured the fords of the Jordan, towards Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29 Mais ils tuèrent en ce temps-là environ dix mille Moabites, tous hommes forts et vaillants; nul d’entre eux ne put échapper.
And they smote of Moab, at that time, about ten thousand men, every one a mighty man, and every one a man of valour, —and, there escaped not a man.
30 Ainsi Moab fut humilié en ce jour-là sous la main d’Israël; et le pays se reposa durant quatre-vingts ans.
And Moab was subdued on that day, under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years, and Ehud judged them until his death.
31 Après Aod il y eut Samgar, fils d’Anath, qui défit six cents hommes d’entre les Philistins avec un soc de charrue et lui aussi défendit Israël.
And, after him, was Shamgar, son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines, six hundred men, with an ox-goad, —and, he also, saved Israel.
