Juges 21
1 Les enfants d’Israël jurèrent aussi à Maspha, et dirent: Nul de nous ne donnera aux enfants de Benjamin de ses filles pour femmes.
And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, “None of us gives his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.”
2 Et ils vinrent tous à la maison du Dieu, à Silo, et, assis en sa présence jusqu’au soir, ils commencèrent à pleurer avec de grands cris, disant:
And the people come to Beth-El, and sit there until the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep [with] a great weeping,
3 Pourquoi, Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, est-il arrivé dans votre peuple ce malheur, qu’aujourd’hui une tribu ait été retranchée, au milieu de nous?
and say, “Why, O YHWH, God of Israel, has this been in Israel—to be lacking one tribe from Israel today?”
4 Mais le jour suivant, se levant au point du jour, ils construisirent un autel, ils y offrirent des holocaustes et des victimes pacifiques, et ils dirent:
And it comes to pass on the next day, that the people rise early, and build an altar there, and cause burnt-offerings and peace-offerings to ascend.
5 Qui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël n’est pas monté avec l’armée du Seigneur? Car ils s’étaient engagés par un grand serment, lorsqu’ils étaient à Maspha, de tuer ceux qui y auraient manqué.
And the sons of Israel say, “Who [is] he that has not come up in the assembly to YHWH out of all the tribes of Israel?” For the great oath has been concerning him who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh, saying, “He is surely put to death.”
6 Et touchés de repentir par rapport à leur frère Benjamin, les Israélites commencèrent à dire: Une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël.
And the sons of Israel sigh concerning their brother Benjamin, and say, “Today there has been one tribe cut off from Israel,
7 D’où prendront-ils des femmes? Car tous ensemble nous avons juré que nous ne leur donnerions point nos filles.
what do we do for them—for those who are left—for wives, since we have sworn by YHWH not to give to them from our daughters for wives?”
8 C’est pourquoi ils dirent: Qui est celui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël, qui n’est pas monté vers le Seigneur à Maspha? Et voilà que les habitants de Jabès-Galaad se trouvèrent n’avoir pas été avec l’armée.
And they say, “Who is [that] one out of the tribes of Israel who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh?” And behold, none has come to the camp from Jabesh-Gilead—to the assembly.
9 (Dans le temps même que les enfants d’Israël étaient à Silo, nul d’eux ne s’y trouva).
And the people numbered themselves, and behold, there is no man from the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.
10 C’est pourquoi ils envoyèrent dix mille hommes très forts, et ils leur ordonnèrent, disant: Allez, et frappez les habitants de Jabès-Galaad du tranchant du glaive, tant les femmes que leurs petits enfants.
And the congregation sends twelve thousand men of the sons of valor there, and commands them, saying, “Go—and you have struck the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.
11 Et voici ce que vous devrez observer: Tuez tout ce qui est du sexe masculin, et les femmes qui ont connu des hommes; mais les vierges, réservez-les.
And this [is] the thing which you do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, you devote.”
12 Et il se trouva à Jabès-Galaad quatre cents vierges qui n’avaient pas connu de lit d’homme, et ils les emmenèrent au camp à Silo, dans la terre de Chanaan.
And they find four hundred young women, virgins, out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them to the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan.
13 Ils envoyèrent ensuite des messagers aux enfants de Benjamin, qui étaient au rocher de Remmon, et ils leur ordonnèrent de les recevoir en paix.
And all the congregation sends [word] and speaks to the sons of Benjamin who [are] in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaims peace to them;
14 Et les enfants de Benjamin vinrent en ce temps-là, et on leur donna pour femmes des filles de Jabès-Galaad; mais on n’en trouva point d’autres qu’on pût leur donner de la même manière.
and Benjamin turns back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for [all of] them so.
15 Et tout Israël éprouva une grande douleur, et fit pénitence du meurtre d’une des tribus d’Israël.
And the people sighed concerning Benjamin, for YHWH had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
16 Et les anciens dirent: Que ferons-nous pour les autres qui n’ont pas reçu de femmes? Toutes les femmes en Benjamin sont tombées à la fois,
And [the] elderly of the congregation say, “What do we do to the remnant for wives—for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?”
17 Et nous devons avec un grand soin et un grand zèle, pourvoir à ce qu’une des tribus d’Israël ne soit pas détruite.
And they say, “A possession of an escaped party [is] to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;
18 Cependant nous ne pouvons leur donner nos filles, liés par le serment et la malédiction dans laquelle nous avons dit: Maudit celui qui donnera de ses filles pour femmes à Benjamin!
and we are not able to give wives to them out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.”
19 Ils prirent donc cette résolution, et ils dirent: Voici que la solennité anniversaire du Seigneur est à Silo, qui est située au septentrion de la ville de Béthel, et au côté oriental de la voie qui de Béthel s’étend jusqu’à Sichem et au midi de la ville de Lébona.
And they say, “Behold, a festival of YHWH [is] in Shiloh, from time to time, which [is] on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”
20 Et ils ordonnèrent aux enfants de Benjamin, et dirent: Allez, et cachez-vous dans les vignes.
And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go—and you have laid wait in the vineyards,
21 Et lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo s’avancer pour former des danses, selon la coutume, sortez soudainement des vignes, prenez parmi elles chacun votre femme, et allez dans la terre de Benjamin.
and have seen, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances—then you have gone out from the vineyards, and each caught his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh for yourselves, and have gone to the land of Benjamin;
22 Et lorsque leurs pères et leurs frères viendront se plaindre de vous, et vous accuser, nous leur dirons: Ayez pitié d’eux; car ils ne les ont pas enlevées par le droit des combattants et des vainqueurs; mais quand ils ont demandé à les avoir, vous ne les avez pas données; ainsi c’est de votre côté qu’est la faute.
and it has been, when their fathers or their brothers come in to plead to us, that we have said to them, Favor us [by] them, for we have not each taken his wife in battle, for you have not given [wives] to them at this time, [so] you are [not] guilty.”
23 Et les enfants de Benjamin firent comme il leur avait été commandé; et, selon leur nombre, chacun enleva une des filles qui formaient des danses, pour en faire sa femme; et ils s’en allèrent dans leurs possessions, rebâtissant les villes et y habitant.
And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have seized; and they go, and return to their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.
24 Les enfants d’Israël aussi retournèrent, selon leurs tribus et leurs familles, dans leurs tabernacles. En ces jours-là, il n’y avait point
And the sons of Israel go up and down there at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they each go out there to his inheritance.
In those days there is no king in Israel; each does that which is right in his own eyes.
