Juges 19
1 Il y eut un certain homme Lévite, habitant sur le côté de la montagne d’Ephraïm, et qui prit une femme de Bethléhem de Juda,
And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem in Judah.
2 Laquelle le quitta; et étant retournée dans la maison de son père à Bethléhem, elle demeura chez lui pendant quatre mois,
And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem in Judah, and was there the space of four months.
3 Mais son mari la suivit, voulant se réconcilier avec elle, la gagner par ses caresses, et la ramener chez lui; il avait avec lui un serviteur et deux ânes. Sa femme l’accueillit et l’introduisit dans la maison de son père. Lorsque son beau-père eut apprit sa venue, et qu’il l’eut vu, il alla au devant de lui tout joyeux,
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her back, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses; and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4 Et il l’embrassa. Or, le gendre demeura dans la maison du beau-père pendant trois jours, mangeant avec lui et buvant familièrement.
And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days; so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5 Mais au quatrième jour, se levant de nuit, il voulut partir. Son beau-père le retint, et lui dit: Goûte d’abord un peu de pain, et fortifie ton estomac, et ensuite tu partiras.
And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart; and the damsel's father said unto his son-in-law: 'Stay thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.'
6 Ils s’assirent donc ensemble, et ils mangèrent et burent. Et le père de la jeune fille dit à son gendre: Je te prie de demeurer aujourd’hui, et que nous nous réjouissions ensemble.
So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together; and the damsel's father said unto the man: 'Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.'
7 Mais lui, se levant, commença à vouloir partir; mais néanmoins son beau-père le retint par ses efforts et le fit demeurer chez lui.
And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.
8 Mais, le matin venu, le Lévite préparait son voyage; et son beau-père de nouveau: Je te prie, lui dit-il, prends un peu de nourriture, et, tes forces réparées, attends que le jour soit plus avancé, ensuite tu partiras. Ils mangèrent donc ensemble.
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said: 'Stay thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth'; and they did eat, both of them.
9 Et le jeune homme se leva, pour aller avec sa femme et son serviteur. Son beau-père lui dit de nouveau: Considère que le jour est plus incliné vers le couchant, et qu’il s’approche du soir; demeure chez moi encore aujourd’hui, passe un jour joyeux, et demain tu partiras pour aller à ta maison.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said unto him: 'Behold, now the day draweth toward evening; tarry, I pray you, all night; behold, the day groweth to an end; lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.'
10 Son gendre ne voulut pas acquiescer à ses paroles; mais il partit aussitôt, et vint contre Jébus, qui est appelée d’un autre nom Jérusalem, prenant avec lui deux ânes chargés et sa seconde femme.
But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus — the same is Jerusalem; and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.
11 Et déjà ils étaient près de Jébus, et le jour se changeait en nuit, lorsque le serviteur dit à son maître: Venez, je vous conjure, dirigeons-nous vers la ville des Jébuséens, et demeurons-y.
When they were by Jebus — the day was far spent — the servant said unto his master: 'Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.'
12 Son maître lui répondit: Je n’entrerai point dans la ville d’une nation étrangère, qui n’est point des enfants d’Israël; mais je passerai jusqu’à Gabaa;
And his master said unto him: 'We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.'
13 Et lorsque j’y serai parvenu, nous y demeurerons, ou au moins dans la ville de Rama.
And he said unto his servant: 'Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.'
14 Ils passèrent donc Jébus, et ils continuaient le chemin commencé, et le soleil se couchait pour eux près de Gabaa, qui est dans la tribu de Benjamin;
So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15 Et ils se dirigèrent vers cette ville pour y demeurer. Lorsqu’ils y furent entrés, ils s’assirent sur la place de la ville, et nul ne voulut leur donner l’hospitalité.
And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah; and he went in, and sat him down in the broad place of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.
16 Mais voilà que parut un homme vieux, revenant de la campagne et de son travail, sur le soir, qui lui aussi était de la montagne d’Ephraïm, et qui habitait comme étranger à Gabaa. Or, les hommes de la contrée étaient enfants de Jémini.
And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even; now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17 Et, les yeux levés, ce vieillard vit le Lévite assis avec ses bagages sur la place de la ville, et il lui demanda: D’où viens-tu? et où vas-tu?
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the broad place of the city; and the old man said: 'Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?'
18 Celui-ci lui répondit: Nous sommes partis de Bethléhem de Juda, et nous nous rendons à notre demeure, qui est sur le côté de la montagne d’Ephraïm, d’où nous étions allés à Bethléhem; et maintenant nous allons à la maison de Dieu, et nul ne veut nous recevoir sous son toit,
And he said unto him: 'We are passing from Beth-lehem in Judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem in Judah, and I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.
19 Quoique nous ayons de la paille et du foin pour la pâture des ânes, et du pain et du vin pour mon usage, et celui de votre servante, et du serviteur qui est avec moi: nous n’avons besoin de rien, si ce n’est d’un logement.
Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants; there is no want of any thing.'
20 Le vieillard lui répondit: La paix soit avec vous! c’est moi qui donnerai tout ce qui est nécessaire, seulement, je te prie, ne demeure point sur la place.
And the old man said: 'Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the broad place.'
21 Et il l’introduisit dans sa maison, et il donna à manger aux ânes; et après qu’eux-mêmes eurent lavé leurs pieds, il leur donna un repas.
So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22 Pendant qu’ils mangeaient, et qu’après la fatigue du chemin ils redonnaient des forces à leurs corps en mangeant et en buvant, il vint des hommes de cette ville, fils de Bélial (c’est-à-dire sans joug); et environnant la maison du vieillard, ils se mirent à frapper à la porte, criant au maître de la maison, et disant: Fais sortir l’homme qui est entré dans ta maison, afin que nous en abusions.
As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying: 'Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.'
23 Alors le vieillard sortit vers eux et dit: Gardez-vous, mes frères, gardez-vous de faire ce mal: cet homme est entré sous mon toit hospitalier; et renoncez à cette folie:
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them: 'Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this wanton deed.
24 , J’ai une fille vierge et cet homme a sa seconde femme; je les amènerai vers vous, afin que vous les humiliez, et que vous assouvissiez votre passion; seulement, je vous conjure, ne commettez pas ce crime contre nature sur cet homme.
Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; I will bring them out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you; but unto this man do not so wanton a thing.'
25 Ils ne voulaient pas acquiescer à ses paroles. Ce que voyant le Lévite il leur amena sa femme, et la livra à leurs outrages; lorsqu’ils en eurent abusé pendant toute la nuit, ils la renvoyèrent le matin.
But the men would not hearken to him; so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning; and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26 Mais cette femme, les ténèbres de la nuit se retirant, vint à la porte de la maison où demeurait son seigneur, et là elle tomba par terre.
Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
27 Le matin venu, le Lévite se leva, et ouvrit la porte, pour achever sa route commencée: et voilà que sa femme gisait devant la porte, les mains étendues sur le seuil.
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.
28 Pensant qu’elle reposait, il lui dit: Lève-toi et marchons. Elle ne répondant rien, il comprit qu’elle était morte; il la prit, la mit sur l’âne et retourna en sa maison.
And he said unto her. 'Up, and let us be going'; but none answered; then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and got him unto his place.
29 Lorsqu’il y fut entré, il prit le glaive, et coupant par morceaux le cadavre de sa femme avec ses os en douze parts, il les envoya dans tous les confins d’Israël.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
30 Ce que chacun ayant vu, tous s’écriaient: Jamais chose pareille n’a été faite en Israël, depuis le jour que nos pères sont montés de l’Égypte jusqu’au temps présent: prononcez une sentence, et décidez ensemble ce qu’il faut faire.
And it was so, that all that saw it said: 'Such a thing hath not happened nor been seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day; consider it, take counsel, and speak.'
