1 Ensuite Samson descendit à Thamnatha; et voyant là une femme d’entre les filles des Philistins,
And Samson went down to Timnathah, and saw a woman in Timnathah of the daughters of the Philistines.
2 Il monta, et il l’annonça à son père et à sa mère, disant: J’ai vu à Thamnatha une femme d’entre les filles des Philistins, que je vous prie d’accepter pour mon épouse.
And he went up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnathah of the daughters of the Philistines; and now take her to me for wife.
3 Son père et sa mère lui répondirent: Est-ce qu’il n’y a point de femme parmi les filles de tes frères, et dans tout mon peuple, puisque tu veux prendre une femme d’entre les Philistins qui sont incirconcis? Et Samson dit à son père: Acceptez-la pour moi, parce qu’elle a plu à mes yeux.
Then said unto him his father and his mother, Is there not among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, a woman, that thou art going to take a wife from the Philistines, the uncircumcised? And Samson said unto his father, This one take for me; for she pleaseth me well.
4 Mais ses parents ne savaient pas que la chose se faisait par le Seigneur, et qu’il cherchait une occasion contre les Philistins; car en ce temps-là les Philistins dominaient sur Israël.
But his father and his mother knew not that it was from the Lord, that he sought but an occasion against the Philistines; and at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 C’est pourquoi Samson descendit avec son père et sa mère à Thamnatha. Et, lorsqu’ils furent arrivés aux vignes de la ville, parut le petit d’un lion furieux et rugissant, et il vint à la rencontre de Samson.
And Samson thus went down, with his father and his mother, to Timnathah; and when they were come as far as the vineyards of Timnathah, behold, a young lion came roaring toward him.
6 Mais l’Esprit du Seigneur s’empara de Samson, qui déchira le lion comme il aurait mis un chevreau en pièces, n’ayant absolument rien dans la main; et il ne voulut pas le déclarer à son père et à sa mère.
And the Spirit of the Lord came suddenly over him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand; but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
7 Et il descendit, et il parla à la femme qui avait plu à ses yeux.
And he went down, and spoke unto the woman; and she pleased Samson well.
8 Et, après quelques jours, revenant pour l’épouser, il se détourna pour voir le corps du lion, et voilà qu’un essaim d’abeilles était dans la gueule du lion, et un rayon de miel.
And when he returned after a time to take her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees in the carcass of the lion and honey likewise.
9 Ayant pris ce rayon dans ses mains, il le mangeait en chemin; et étant arrivé chez son père et sa mère, il leur en donna une partie, qu’eux-mêmes aussi mangèrent; mais cependant il ne voulut pas leur déclarer qu’il avait pris le miel dans la gueule du lion.
And he took it out in his hands, and went on, eating as he was going, and came to his father and mother, and he gave unto them, and they did eat; but he told them not that out of the carcass of the lion he had taken the honey.
10 Son père descendit donc chez cette femme, et il fit pour son fils Samson un festin; car c’est ainsi que les jeunes gens avaient coutume de faire.
And his father went down unto the woman; and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
11 Or, lorsque les habitants de ce lieu l’eurent vu, ils lui donnèrent trente jeunes hommes pour être avec lui.
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions, and they remained with him.
12 Samson leur dit: Je vous proposerai une énigme; si vous me l’expliquez pendant les sept jours du festin, je vous donnerai trente vêtements de dessous et autant de tuniques;
And Samson said unto them, I will now propound unto you a riddle; if ye can in anywise tell it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then will I give you thirty shirts and thirty changes of garments;
13 Mais si vous ne pouvez pas l’expliquer, c’est vous qui me donnerez trente vêtements de dessous et des tuniques en même nombre. Ils lui répondirent: Propose l’énigme afin que nous l’entendions.
But if ye will not be able to tell it to me, then shall ye give me thirty shirts and thirty changes of garments. And they said unto him, Propound thy riddle, that we may hear it.
14 Alors Samson leur dit: De celui qui mangeait est sortie une nourriture, et du fort est sorti de la douceur; et ils ne purent point pendant trois jours expliquer l’énigme.
And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth food, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not solve the riddle in three days.
15 Mais, lorsqu’approchait le septième jour, ils dirent à la femme de Samson: Gagne ton mari par tes caresses, et persuade-lui de te donner la signification de l’énigme; que si tu ne veux pas le faire, nous te brûlerons, toi et la maison de ton père; est-ce que tu ne nous as appelés aux noces que pour nous dépouiller?
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson's wife, Persuade thy husband, that he may solve unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: have ye invited us to impoverish us? is it not so?
16 Elle répandait des larmes auprès de Samson, et se plaignait, disant: Tu me hais et tu ne m’aimes point; c’est pour cela que tu ne veux pas m’expliquer l’énigme que tu as proposée aux fils de mon peuple. Mais Samson répondit: Je ne l’ai point voulu dire à mon père et à ma mère; et je pourrai te l’expliquer?
And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, Thou doest but hate me, and lovest me not: that riddle hast thou propounded unto the children of my people, and me hast thou not told [the solution]. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it to my father and to my mother, and thee shall I tell it?
17 Ainsi, pendant les sept jours du festin elle pleurait devant lui; et enfin le septième jour, comme elle lui était importune, il lui expliqua. Elle aussitôt la fit connaître à ses concitoyens.
And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted; and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she had worried him: and she told [the solution of] the riddle to the children of her people.
18 Et eux dirent à Samson le septième jour avant le coucher du soleil: Quoi de plus doux que du miel, et de plus fort que le lion? Et Samson leur répondit: Si vous n’aviez pas labouré avec ma génisse, vous n’auriez pas découvert mon énigme.
Then said unto him the men of the city on the seventh day before the sun was yet gone down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19 C’est pourquoi l’esprit du Seigneur s’empara de Samson, et il descendit à Ascalon: et là il tua trente hommes dont il donna les vêtements qu’il leur avait pris à ceux qui avaient expliqué l’énigme. Et étant très irrité il monta à la maison de son père.
And the Spirit of the Lord came suddenly over him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew of them thirty men, and he took their apparel, and gave the changes of garments unto the expounders of the riddle; but his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.
20 Or, sa femme prit pour mari un de ses amis, un de ceux qui l’avaient accompagné à ses noces.
And Samson's wife was given to his companion who had been given him as his associate.
