Juges 11
1 En ce temps-là fut Jephté Galaadite, homme très fort, et guerrier, fils d’une femme de mauvaise vie, lequel naquit de Galaad.
At that time, there was a Gileadite, Jephthah, a very strong man and a fighter, the son of a kept woman, and he was born of Gilead.
2 Or Galaad eut une femme dont il eut des fils, qui après qu’ils eurent grandi, chassèrent Jephté, disant: Tu ne pourras pas être héritier dans la maison de notre père, parce que c’est d’une autre mère que tu es né.
Now Gilead had a wife, from whom he received sons. And they, after growing up, cast out Jephthah, saying, “You cannot inherit in the house of our father, because you were born of another mother.”
3 Et Jephté les fuyant et les évitant, habita dans la terre de Tob. Alors se joignirent à lui des hommes dénués de tout et exerçant des brigandages, et ils le suivaient comme leur chef.
And so, fleeing and avoiding them, he lived in the land of Tob. And men who were indigent and robbers joined with him, and they followed him as their leader.
4 En ces temps-là combattaient les enfants d’Ammon contre Israël.
In those days, the sons of Ammon fought against Israel.
5 Et comme ils le pressaient vivement, les anciens de Galaad allèrent, pour amener Jephté de la terre de Tob, à leur secours;
And being steadfastly attacked, the elders of Gilead traveled so that they might obtain for their assistance Jephthah, from the land of Tob.
6 Et ils lui dirent: Viens, sois notre chef, et combats contre les enfants d’Ammon.
And they said to him, “Come and be our leader, and fight against the sons of Ammon.”
7 Jephté leur répondit: N’êtes-vous point ceux qui me haïssez, et qui m’avez jeté hors de la maison de mon père? Et maintenant vous êtes venus vers moi, contraints par la nécessité.
But he answered them: “Are you not the ones who hated me, and who cast me out of my father’s house? And yet now you come to me, compelled by necessity?”
8 Et les princes de Galaad dirent à Jephté: C’est pour ce motif que nous venons maintenant vers toi, afin que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes contre les fils d’Ammon, et que tu sois le chef de tous ceux qui habitent en Galaad.
And the leaders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “But it is due to this necessity that we have approached you now, so that you may set out with us, and fight against the sons of Ammon, and be commander over all who live in Gilead.”
9 Jephté leur demanda encore: Si vraiment vous êtes venus vers moi, pour que je combatte pour vous les enfants d’Ammon, et si le Seigneur les livre en mes mains, est-ce moi qui serai votre prince?
Jephthah also said to them: “If you have come to me so that I may fight for you against the sons of Ammon, and if the Lord will deliver them into my hands, will I truly be your leader?”
10 Ils lui répondirent: Le Seigneur qui entend ceci, est lui-même médiateur et témoin que nous exécuterons nos promesses.
They answered him, “The Lord who hears these things is himself the Mediator and the Witness that we shall do what we have promised.”
11 C’est pourquoi Jephté s’en alla avec les princes de Galaad, et tout le peuple le fit son prince. Mais Jephté dit toutes ces paroles devant le Seigneur à Maspha;
And so Jephthah went with the leaders of Gilead, and all the people made him their leader. And Jephthah spoke all his words, in the sight of the Lord, at Mizpah.
12 Et il envoya des messagers au roi des enfants d’Ammon, pour dire de sa part: Qu’importe à moi et à toi, pour que tu sois venu contre moi, afin de ravager ma terre?
And he sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, who said on his behalf, “What is there between you and me, that you would approach against me, so that you might lay waste to my land?”
13 Le roi leur répondit: C’est parce qu’Israël, quand il est monté d’Égypte, a pris ma terre, depuis les confins d’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc et jusqu’au Jourdain: maintenant donc, rends-la moi en paix.
And he responded to them, “It is because Israel took my land, when he ascended from Egypt, from the parts of Arnon, as far as the Jabbok and the Jordan. Now therefore, restore these to me with peace.”
14 Jephté donna de nouveau sa réponse par les messagers, et il leur commanda de dire au roi d’Ammon:
And Jephthah again commissioned them, and he ordered them to say to the king of Ammon:
15 Voici ce que dit Jephté: Israël n’a pas pris la terre de Moab, ni la terre des enfants d’Ammon:
“Jephthah says this: Israel did not take the land of Moab, nor the land of the sons of Ammon.
16 Mais, quand il monta de l’Égypte, il marcha à travers le désert jusqu’à la mer Rouge, et il vint à Cadès.
But when they ascended together from Egypt, he walked through the desert as far as the Red Sea, and he went into Kadesh.
17 Et il envoya des messagers au roi d’Edom, disant: Laisse-moi passer par ta terre. Et le roi ne voulut point acquiescer à ses prières. Il envoya aussi vers le roi de Moab, qui lui-même dédaigna de donner passage. C’est pourquoi il demeura à Cadès.
And he sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Permit me to pass through your land.’ But he was not willing to agree to his petition. Likewise, he sent to the king of Moab, who also refused to offer him passage. And so he delayed in Kadesh,
18 Puis, il côtoya la terre d’Edom et la terre de Moab, vint contre le côté oriental de Moab, et campa au-delà de l’Arnon; mais il ne voulut pas entrer dans le territoire de Moab; car l’Arnon est la frontière de la terre de Moab.
and he circled around the side of the land of Edom and the land of Moab. And he arrived opposite the eastern region of the land of Moab. And he made camp across the Arnon. But he was not willing to enter the borders of Moab. (Of course, Arnon is the border of the land of Moab.)
19 C’est pourquoi Israël envoya des messagers à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésébon, et ils lui dirent: Laisse-nous passer par ta terre jusqu’au fleuve.
And so Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who was living at Heshbon. And they said to him, “Permit me to cross through your land as far as the river.”
20 Séhon, lui aussi, méprisant les paroles d’Israël, ne le laissa point passer par son territoire; mais ayant assemblé une multitude innombrable, il sortit contre lui à Jasa, et il résistait fortement.
But he, too, despising the words of Israel, would not permit him to cross through his borders. Instead, gathering an innumerable multitude, he went out against him at Jahaz, and he resisted strongly.
21 Mais le Seigneur le livra avec toute son armée aux mains d’Israël, qui le battit et qui posséda toute la terre de l’Amorrhéen, habitant de cette contrée.
But the Lord delivered him, with his entire army, into the hands of Israel. And he struck him down, and he possessed all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that region,
22 Et toutes ses frontières, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc, et depuis le désert jusqu’au Jourdain.
with all its parts, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.
23 Ainsi, le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël renversa l’Amorrhéen, Israël son peuple combattant contre lui, et toi maintenant, tu veux posséder sa terre?
Therefore, it was the Lord, the God of Israel, who overthrew the Amorites, by means of his people Israel fighting against them. And now you wish to possess his land?
24 Ce que possède Chamos ton dieu, ne t’est-il point dû légitimement? Or, ce que le Seigneur notre Dieu a acquis comme vainqueur, viendra en notre possession.
Are not the things that your god Chemosh possesses owed to you by right? And so, what the Lord our God has obtained by victory falls to us as a possession.
25 À moins que tu vailles mieux que Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab, et que tu nous montres qu’il se soit plaint d’Israël, et qu’il ait combattu contre lui,
Or are you, perhaps, better than Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Or are you able to explain what his argument was against Israel, and why he fought against him?
26 Quand il habita à Hésébon et dans ses bourgades, à Aroer, et dans ses villages, ou dans toutes les villes près du Jourdain, pendant trois cents ans. Pourquoi, pendant un si long temps, n’as-tu rien tenté au sujet de cette réclamation?
And though he has lived in Heshbon, and its villages, and in Aroer, and its villages, and in all the cities near the Jordan for three hundred years, why have you, for such long a time, put forward nothing about this claim?
27 Ainsi, ce n’est pas moi qui suis en faute avec toi, mais c’est toi qui agis mal envers moi, me déclarant des guerres injustes. Que le Seigneur, arbitre de ce jour, juge entre Israël et entre les enfants d’Ammon.
Therefore, I am not sinning against you, but you are doing evil against me, by declaring an unjust war against me. May the Lord be the Judge and the Arbiter this day, between Israel and the sons of Ammon.”
28 Mais le roi des enfants d’Ammon ne voulut point acquiescer aux paroles de Jephté, qu’il lui avez mandées par les messagers.
But the king of the sons of Ammon was not willing to agree to the words of Jephthah that he commissioned by the messengers.
29 Et l’esprit du Seigneur vint sur Jephté; et Jephté parcourant Galaad, et Manassé, de même que Maspha de Galaad, et de là passant jusqu’aux enfants d’Ammon,
Therefore, the Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jephthah, and circling around Gilead, and Manasseh, and also Mizpah of Gilead, and crossing from there to the sons of Ammon,
30 Il voua un vœu au Seigneur, disant: Si vous livrez les enfants d’Ammon en mes mains,
he made a vow to the Lord, saying, “If you will deliver the sons of Ammon into my hands,
31 Quiconque le premier sortira des portes de ma maison, et viendra à ma rencontre, lorsque je retournerai en paix du pays des enfants d’Ammon, je l’offrirai en holocauste au Seigneur.
whoever will be the first to depart from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, the same will I offer as a holocaust to the Lord.”
32 Jephté passa ensuite chez les enfants d’Ammon, pour combattre contre eux; et le Seigneur les livra en ses mains.
And Jephthah crossed to the sons of Ammon, so that he might fight against them. And the Lord delivered them into his hands.
33 Il frappa aussi d’une très grande plaie vingt villes, depuis Aroer jusqu’à l’entrée de Mennith, et jusqu’à Abel, qui est plantée de vignes; et les enfants d’Ammon furent humiliés par les enfants d’Israël.
And he struck them down from Aroer, as far as the entrance to Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel, which is covered with vineyards, in an exceedingly great slaughter. And the sons of Ammon were humbled by the sons of Israel.
34 Or, Jephté retournant à Maspha, dans sa maison, sa fille unique, car il n’avait pas d’autres enfants, vint au-devant de lui avec des chœurs et des tambours.
But when Jephthah returned to Mizpah, to his own house, his only daughter met him with timbrels and dances. For he had no other children.
35 L’ayant vue, il déchira ses vêtements, et dit: Hélas! ma fille, tu m’as trompé, et toi-même tu t’es trompée; car j’ai ouvert ma bouche au Seigneur, et je ne pourrai pas faire autre chose.
And upon seeing her, he tore his garments, and he said: “Alas, my daughter! You have cheated me, and you yourself have been cheated. For I opened my mouth to the Lord, and I can do nothing else.”
36 Sa fille lui répondit: Mon père, si vous avez ouvert votre bouche au Seigneur, faites-moi tout ce que vous avez promis, là vengeance et la victoire sur les ennemis vous ayant été accordées.
And she answered him, “My father, if you have opened your mouth to the Lord, do to me whatever you have promised, since victory has been granted to you, as well as vengeance against your enemies.”
37 Elle dit encore à son père: Accordez-moi seulement ce que je vous demande avec prière: Laissez-moi pendant deux mois parcourir les montagnes et pleurer ma virginité avec mes compagnes.
And she said to her father: “Grant to me this one thing, which I request. Permit me, that I may wander the hillsides for two months, and that I may mourn my virginity with my companions.”
38 Jephté lui répondit: Va. Et il la laissa pendant deux mois. Et lorsqu’elle s’en fut allée, avec ses amies et ses compagnes, elle pleurait sa virginité sur les montagnes.
And he answered her, “Go.” And he released her for two months. And when she had departed with her friends and companions, she wept over her virginity in the hillsides.
39 Or, deux mois achevés, elle revint vers son père; et il fit à son égard, selon ce qu’il avait voué; et elle ne connut point d’homme. De là vint l’usage en Israël, et la coutume a toujours été conservée,
And when the two months expired, she returned to her father, and he did to her just as he had vowed, though she knew no man. From this, the custom grew up in Israel, and the practice has been preserved,
40 Qu’après le cours d’une année, les filles d’Israël s’assemblent pour pleurer la fille de Jephté Galaadite pendant quatre jours.
such that, after each year passes, the daughters of Israel convene as one, and they lament the daughter of Jephthah, the Gileadite, for four days.
