Josué 7
1 Or, les enfants d’Israël transgressèrent le commandement, et s’approprièrent de l’anathème; car Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré, de la tribu de Juda, prit quelque chose de l’anathème, et le Seigneur fut irrité contre les enfants d’Israël.
But the children of Israel transgressed the commandment, and took to their own use of the anathema. For Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda, took something of the anathema: and the Lord was angry against the children of Israel.
2 Et lorsque Josué envoya de Jéricho des hommes contre Haï, qui est près de Béthaven, au côté oriental de la ville de Béthel, il leur dit: Montez, et explorez la terre. Ceux-ci, accomplissant ses ordres, explorèrent Haï.
And when Josue sent men from Jericho against Hai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of the town of Bethel, he said to them: Go up, and view the country: and they fulfilled his command, and viewed Hai.
3 Et, revenus, ils lui dirent: Que tout le peuple ne monte point, mais que deux ou trois mille hommes aillent, et détruisent la ville: pourquoi tout le peuple se fatiguerait-il en vain contre des ennemis très peu nombreux?
And returning they said to him: Let not all the people go up, but let two or three thousand men go and destroy the city: why should all the people be troubled in vain against enemies that are very few?
4 Il monta donc trois mille combattants, qui aussitôt tournant le dos,
There went up therefore three thousand fighting men: who immediately turned their backs,
5 Furent battus par les habitants de la ville de Haï; et il tomba trente-six hommes d’entre eux; et les ennemis les poursuivirent depuis la porte jusqu’à Sabarim, et ils les taillèrent en pièces, pendant qu’ils fuyaient à travers les versants; et le cœur du peuple fut saisi d’une grande crainte et s’écoula comme l’eau.
And were defeated by the men of the city of Hai, and there fell of them six and thirty men: and the enemies pursued them from the gate as far as Sabarim, and they slew them as they fled by the descent: and the heart of the people was struck with fear, and melted like water.
6 Mais Josué déchira ses vêtements et tomba, incliné vers la terre devant l’arche du Seigneur jusqu’au soir, tant lui que tous les anciens d’Israël; et ils mirent de la poussière sur leurs têtes,
But Josue rent his garments, and fell flat on the ground before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and all the ancients of Israel: and they put dust upon their heads.
7 Et Josué dit: Hélas! Seigneur Dieu, pourquoi avez-vous voulu que ce peuple passât le fleuve du Jourdain, pour nous livrer aux mains de l’Amorrhéen et nous perdre? Oh! que ne sommes-nous demeurés au-delà du Jourdain comme nous avions commencé!
And Josue said: Alas, O Lord God, why wouldst thou bring this people over the river Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and to destroy us? would God, we had stayed beyond the Jordan as we began.
8 Mon Seigneur Dieu, que dirai-je, voyant Israël tournant le dos devant ses ennemis?
My Lord God, what shall I say, seeing Israel turning their backs to their enemies?
9 Les Chananéens rapprendront et tous les habitants de la terre, et réunis ensemble, ils nous envelopperont, et ils effaceront notre nom de la terre; et que ferez-vous pour votre grand nom?
The Chanaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and being gathered together will surround us and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do to thy great name?
10 Et le Seigneur dit à Josué: Lève-toi et pourquoi es-tu couché la face contre terre?
And the Lord said to Josue: Arise, why liest thou flat on the ground?
11 Israël a péché et il a transgressé mon alliance; ils ont pris quelque chose de l’anathème; ils l’ont dérobé, ils ont menti, et ils l’ont caché parmi leurs bagages.
Israel hath sinned, and transgressed my covenant: and they have taken of the anathema, and have stolen and lied, and have hidden it among their goods.
12 Israël ne pourra pas tenir devant ses ennemis, et il les fuira, parce qu’il s’est souillé par l’anathème: je ne serai plus avec vous, jusqu’à ce que vous détruisiez celui qui est coupable de ce crime.
Neither can Israel stand before his enemies, but he shall flee from them: because he is defiled with the anathema. I will be no more with you, till you destroy him that is guilty of this wickedness.
13 Lève-toi, sanctifie le peuple, et dis-leur: Sanctifiez-vous pour demain; car voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: L’anathème est au milieu de toi, Israël; tu ne pourras tenir devant tes ennemis, jusqu’à ce que disparaisse d’au milieu de toi celui qui s’est souillé de ce crime.
Arise, sanctify the people, and say to them: Be ye sanctified against tomorrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel: The anathema is in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thy enemies, till he be destroyed out of thee that is defiled with this wickedness.
14 Vous viendrez dès le matin, chacun dans votre tribu; et quelle que soit la tribu que le sort désigne, elle viendra divisée en ses familles, la famille en maisons, et la maison en hommes.
And you shall come in the morning every one by your tribes: and what tribe soever the lot shall find, it shall come by its kindreds and the kindred by its houses, and the house by the men.
15 Et quiconque aura été surpris dans ce crime, sera consumé par le feu avec tout ce qui lui appartient, parce qu’il a transgressé l’alliance du Seigneur, et qu’il a commis un forfait dans Israël.
And whosoever he be that shall be found guilty of this fact, he shall be burnt with fire with all his substance, because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and hath done wickedness in Israel.
16 C’est pourquoi Josué, se levant dès le matin, fit venir Israël selon ses tribus, et la tribu de Juda fut trouvée coupable.
Josue, therefore, when he rose in the morning, made Israel to come by their tribes, and the tribe of Juda was found,
17 Et lorsqu’elle se fut présentée selon ses familles, la famille de Zaré fut trouvée coupable. Et Josué la présentant aussi par maisons, il trouva celle de Zabdi coupable.
Which being brought by its families, it was found to be the family of Zare. Bringing that also by the houses, he found it to be Zabdi.
18 Et divisant la maison de Zabdi par chaque homme, il trouva coupable Achan, fils de Charmé, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré, de la tribu de Juda.
And bringing his house man by man, he found Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda.
19 Alors Josué dit à Achan: Mon fils, rends gloire au Seigneur Dieu d’Israël; confesse et déclare-moi ce que tu as fait; ne le cache pas,
And Josue said to Achan: My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and confess, and tell me what thou hast done, hide it not.
20 Et Achan répondit à Josué, et lui dit: C’est vraiment moi qui ai péché contre le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël; et c’est absolument ainsi que j’ai agi:
And Achan answered Josue, and said to him: Indeed I have sinned against the Lord the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.
21 J’ai vu parmi les dépouilles un manteau d’écarlate, fort beau, et deux cents sicles d’argent, et une règle d’or de cinquante sicles; et, les convoitant, je les pris et les cachai dans la terre au milieu de ma tente; mais l’argent, je le couvris de terre dans une fosse,
For I saw among the spoils a scarlet garment exceeding good, and two hundred sides of silver, and a golden rule of fifty sides: and I coveted them, and I took them away, and hid them in the ground is the midst of my tent, and the silver I covered with the earth that I dug up.
22 Josué envoya donc des serviteurs, qui, courant à la tente d’Achan, trouvèrent toutes les choses cachées dans le même lieu, et l’argent aussi.
Josue therefore sent ministers: who running to his tent, found all hidden in the same place, together with the silver.
23 Et les enlevant de la tente, ils les apportèrent à Josué et à tous les enfants d’Israël, et les jetèrent devant le Seigneur.
And taking them away out of the tent, they brought them to Josue, and to all the children of Israel, and threw them down before the Lord.
24 Or, Josué et tout Israël avec lui prenant Achan, fils de Zaré, l’argent, le manteau et la règle, d’or; ses fils aussi et ses filles, ses bœufs, ses ânes et ses brebis, sa tente elle-même et tous ses meubles, les conduisirent dans la vallée d’Achor,
Then Josue and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zare, and the silver and the garments, and the golden rule, his sons also and his daughters, his oxen and asses and sheep, the tent also, and all the goods: and brought them to the valley of Achor:
25 Où Josué dit: Parce que tu nous a troublés, que le Seigneur te trouble en ce jour-ci. Et tout Israël le lapida, et tout ce qui était à lui, fut consumé par feu.
Where Josue said: Because thou hast troubled us, the Lord trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him: and all things that were his, were consumed with fire.
26 Et ils amassèrent sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui est demeuré jusqu’au présent jour. Ainsi fut détournée deux la fureur du Seigneur. Et ce lieu a été appelé du nom de vallée d’Achor jusqu’aujourd’hui.
And they gathered together upon him a great heap of stones, which remaineth until this present day. And the wrath of the Lord was turned away from them. And the name of that place was called the Valley of Achor, until this day.
