Josué 5

1 Quand donc tous les rois des Amorrhéens qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain, vers le côté occidental, et tous les rois de Chanaan qui possédaient les lieux voisins de la grande mer, apprirent que le Seigneur avait séché le cours du Jourdain devant les enfants d’Israël, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent passé, leur cœur défaillit, et le courage les abandonna, parce qu’ils craignaient l’entrée des enfants d’Israël.

And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we had passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

2 Alors le Seigneur dit à Josué: Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre, et circoncis pour la seconde fois les enfants d’Israël.

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

3 Il fit ce qu’avait commandé le Seigneur, et il circoncit les enfants d’Israël sur la colline de la circoncision.

And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

4 Or voici la cause de la seconde circoncision: Tous les mâles d’entre le peuple, qui sortirent de l’Egypte, tous hommes de guerre, moururent dans le désert pendant les très longs détours du chemin;

And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

5 Et ils avaient été tous circoncis; mais le peuple qui naquit dans le désert

Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth from Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

6 Pendant quarante années de marche dans cette très vaste solitude, fut incirconcis, jusqu’à ce que fussent consumés ceux qui n’avaient pas écouté la voix du Seigneur, et à qui auparavant il avait juré qu’il ne leur montrerait pas la terre où coulent du lait et du miel.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

7 Les fils de ceux-ci succédèrent à leurs pères, et furent circoncis par Josué, parce qu’ils étaient incirconcis, comme ils étaient nés, et que pendant le chemin personne ne les avait circoncis.

And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

8 Mais après qu’ils furent tous circoncis, ils demeurèrent campés dans le même lieu, jusqu’à ce qu’ils fussent guéris.

And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were healed.

9 Alors le Seigneur dit à Josué: Aujourd’hui, j’ai ôté l’opprobre de l’Egypte de dessus vous. Et ce lieu a été appelé du nom de Galgala jusqu’au présent jour.

And the LORD said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

10 Et les enfants d’Israël demeurèrent à Galgala, et firent la Pâque, au quatorzième jour du mois, vers le soir, dans les plaines de Jéricho.

And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

11 Et ils mangèrent des fruits de la terre le jour suivant, des pains azymes et de la farine séchée au feu de la même année.

And they ate of the old grain of the land on the next day after the passover, unleavened cakes, and roasted grain in the same day.

12 Et la manne cessa après qu’ils eurent mangé des fruits de la terre, et les enfants d’Israël n’usèrent plus de cette nourriture, mais ils mangèrent des fruits de la terre de Chanaan de la présente année.

And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the old grain of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13 Or, comme Josué était dans la campagne de la ville de Jéricho, il leva les yeux et vit un homme debout en face de lui, tenant un glaive nu; et il alla vers lui, et dit: Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis?

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went to him, and said to him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 Il répondit: Nullement, mais je suis le prince de l’armée du Seigneur, et maintenant je viens. Josué tomba incliné vers la terre. Et, adorant, il dit: Que dit mon Seigneur à son serviteur?

And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshipped, and said to him, What saith my lord to his servant?

15 Ôte, dit-il, ta chaussure de tes pieds; car le lieu dans lequel tu es est saint. Et Josué fit comme il lui avait été commandé.

And the captain of the LORD’S host said to Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place on which thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
