Josué 4

1 Et, quand ils eurent passé, le Seigneur dit à Josué:

And it came to pass, when all the nation had made an end of passing over the Jordan, that Yahweh slake unto Joshua, saying:

2 Choisis douze hommes, un de chaque tribu,

Take unto you, from among the people, twelve men, one man severally from each tribe;

3 Et ordonne-leur d’emporter du milieu du lit du Jourdain, où se sont arrêtés les pieds des prêtres, douze pierres très dures, que vous placerez dans l’endroit du camp où vous planterez cette nuit les tentes,

and command ye them, saying, Take you up from hence, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where stood the feet of the priests with firm footing, twelve stones; —and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge, tonight.

4 Josué appela donc les douze hommes qu’il avait choisis d’entre les enfants d’Israël, un de chaque tribu,

So Joshua called unto the twelve men whom he had made ready, from among the sons of Israel, —one man severally out of each tribe;

5 Et il leur dit: Allez devant l’arche du Seigneur votre Dieu, au milieu de Jourdain, et emportez de là chacun une pierre sur vos épaules, selon le nombre des enfants d’Israël,

and Joshua said unto them: Pass ye over, before the ark of Yahweh your God, into the midst of the Jordan, —and lift ye up, each man one stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel:

6 Afin que ce soit un signe parmi vous. Et quand vos fils vous interrogeront demain, disant: Que veulent dire ces pierres?

that this may be a sign in your midst, —for your sons will ask in time to come, saying, What mean these stones to you?

7 Vous leur répondrez: Les eaux du Jourdain se sont dissipées devant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, quand elle le passait, c’est pourquoi ces pierres ont été placées comme un monument des enfants d’Israël pour toujours.

Then shall ye say unto them—That the waters of the Jordan, were cut off, from before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, when it passed into the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan, were cut off. So shall these stones become a memorial unto the sons of Israel, unto times age-abiding.

8 Les enfants d’Israël firent donc comme ordonna Josué, portant du milieu du lit du Jourdain douze pierres, comme le Seigneur lui avait commandé, selon le nombre des enfants d’Israël, jusqu’au lieu dans lequel ils étaient campés; et c’est là qu’ils les placèrent.

And the sons of Israel did so, as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as spake Yahweh unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel, —and carried them with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

9 Josué plaça aussi douze autres pierres au milieu du lit du Jourdain, où s’arrêtèrent les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance; et elles sont là jusqu’au présent jour.

Twelve stones also, did Joshua set up in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where stood the feet of the priests who were bearing the ark of the covenant, —and they have remained there until this day.

10 Or, les prêtres qui portaient l’arche se tenaient au milieu du Jourdain, jusqu’à ce que fût accompli tout ce que le Seigneur avait ordonné à Josué d’annoncer au peuple, et que lui avait dit Moïse. Et le peuple se hâta et passa le fleuve.

Now, the priests who were bearing the ark, continued standing in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished which Yahweh commanded Joshua, to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua, —the people therefore hasted, and passed over.

11 Et lorsque tous eurent passé, l’arche du Seigneur passa aussi, et les prêtres marchaient devant le peuple.

And so it was, as soon as all the people had made an end of passing over, —then passed over the ark of Yahweh, and the priests, in presence of the people.

12 De plus, les enfants de Ruben et de Gad, et la demi-tribu de Manassé, armés, précédaient les enfants d’Israël, comme leur avait ordonné Moïse;

Also the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, passed over, armed, before the sons of Israel, —as Moses had spoken unto them:

13 Et quarante mille combattants marchaient par bandes et par bataillons à travers les plaines et les campagnes de la ville de Jéricho.

about forty thousand, equipped for the war, passed over before Yahweh, to battle, into the waste plains of Jericho.

14 En ce jour-là le Seigneur exalta Josué devant tout Israël, afin qu’ils le craignissent comme ils avaient craint Moïse pendant qu’il vivait.

On that day, did Yahweh magnify Joshua in the eyes of all Israel, —and they revered him, as they revered Moses, all the days of his life.

15 Et il lui dit:

Then spake Yahweh unto Joshua, saying:

16 Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l’arche de l’alliance de monter du Jourdain.

Command the priests who are bearing the ark of testimony, —that they come up out of the Jordan.

17 Et il leur ordonna, disant: Montez du Jourdain.

So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, —Come ye up out of the Jordan.

18 Et lorsqu’ils furent montés, portant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, et qu’ils eurent commencé à marcher sur la terre sèche, les eaux revinrent dans leur lit, et elles coulaient comme elles avaient coutume auparavant.

And it came to pass, when the priests who were bearing the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the feet of the priests were withdrawn unto the dry ground, then returned the waters of the Jordan unto their place, and went, as before, over all his banks.

19 Or, le peuple monta du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et ils campèrent à Galgala, vers le côté oriental de la ville de Jéricho.

So, the people, came up out of the Jordan, on the tenth of the first month, —and encamped in Gilgal, at the eastern end of Jericho.

20 Josué plaça aussi à Galgala les douze pierres qu’ils avaient prises dans le lit du Jourdain.

And, these twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up, in Gilgal.

21 Et il dit aux enfants d’Israël: Quand vos fils interrogeront demain leurs pères, et leur diront: Que veulent dire ces pierres?

Then spake he unto the sons of Israel, saying, —When your sons shall ask, in time to come, of their fathers, saying, —What mean these stones?

22 Vous les instruirez et vous direz: C’est à travers son lit desséché qu’Israël a passé ce Jourdain.

then shall ye let your sons know, saying, —On dry ground, came Israel over this Jordan;

23 Le Seigneur votre Dieu ayant séché les eaux en votre présence jusqu’à ce que vous eussiez passé, Comme il avait fait auparavant à la mer Rouge, jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé,

in that Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan, from before you, until ye had passed over, —as Yahweh your God had done unto the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over:

24 Afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent la main toute puissante du Seigneur, et que vous-mêmes vous craigniez aussi le Seigneur votre Dieu en tout temps.

that all the peoples of the earth might know the hand of Yahweh, that, firm, it is; that they might revere Yahweh your God, all the days.
