Josué 24

1 Et Josué assembla toutes les tribus d’Israël à Sichem, et il appela les anciens, les princes, les juges et les magistrats; et ils se tinrent en la présence du Seigneur;

And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

2 Et il parla ainsi au peuple: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: C’est au-delà du fleuve qu’ont habité vos pères dès le commencement, Tharé, père d’Abraham et de Nachor, et ils ont servi des dieux étrangers.

And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

3 Je pris donc votre père Abraham du pays de la Mésopotamie, et je l’amenai dans la terre de Chanaan, et je multipliai sa race.

And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

4 Et je lui donnai Isaac, et à Isaac ensuite Jacob et Esaü. Quant à ceux-ci, je donnai à Esaü la montagne de Séir, pour la posséder; mais Jacob et ses fils descendirent en Egypte.

And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5 Et j’envoyai Moïse et Aaron, et je frappai l’Egypte d’un grand nombre de signes et de prodiges.

And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.

6 Et je vous retirai, vous et vos pères de l’Egypte, et vous vîntes à la mer. Alors les Egyptiens poursuivirent vos pères avec des chars et de la cavalerie jusqu’à la mer Rouge.

And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.

7 Mais les enfants d’Israël crièrent au Seigneur, qui mit des ténèbres entre vous et les Egyptiens, et amena sur eux la mer, et les couvrit. Vos yeux ont vu tout ce que j’ai fait en Egypte, et vous avez habité dans le désert pendant longtemps;

And when they cried out unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.

8 Après cela, je vous ai introduits dans la terre de l’Amorrhéen, qui habitait au-delà du Jourdain. Et lorsqu’ils combattaient contre vous, je les livrai en vos mains; et vous avez possédé leur terre, et vous les avez tués.

And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt beyond Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

9 Cependant se leva Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab, et il combattit contre Israël. Il envoya et appela Balaam, fils de Béor, pour vous maudire;

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel; and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:

10 Et moi, je ne voulus point l’écouter; mais au contraire je vous bénis par lui, et je vous délivrai de sa main.

but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

11 Vous passâtes le Jourdain et vous vîntes à Jéricho. Alors combattirent contre vous les hommes de cette ville, l’Amorrhéen, le Phérézéen, le Chananéen, l’Héthéen, le Gergéséen, l’Hévéen et le Jébuséen, et je les livrai en vos mains.

And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

12 De plus, j’envoyai devant vous des frelons, et je les chassai de leur pays, les deux rois des Amorrhéens, non par ton épée, ni par ton arc.

And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

13 Je vous donnai une terre dans laquelle vous n’avez pas travaillé, et des villes que vous n’avez pas bâties, pour que vous y habitiez; des vignes, et des lieux couverts d’oliviers que vous n’avez pas plantés.

And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not laboured, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Maintenant donc craignez le Seigneur, et servez-le avec un cœur parfait et très sincère; enlevez les dieux qu’ont servis vos pères dans la Mésopotamie et dans l’Egypte, et servez le Seigneur.

Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

15 Si, au contraire, c’est un mal à vos yeux que de servir le Seigneur, l’option vous est donnée. Choisissez aujourd’hui ce qui vous plaît, et voyez qui vous devez servir plutôt, ou les dieux qu’ont servi vos pères dans la Mésopotamie, ou les dieux des Amorrhéens, dans la terre desquels vous habitez; pour moi et ma maison, nous servirons le Seigneur.

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

16 Et le peuple répondit, et dit: Loin de nous que nous abandonnions le Seigneur, et que nous servions des dieux étrangers.

And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

17 Le Seigneur notre Dieu lui-même nous a retirés, nous et nos pères, de la terre d’Egypte, de la maison de servitude; il a fait, nous le voyant, de grands prodiges, et il nous a gardés dans tout le chemin par où nous avons marché, et parmi tous les peuples chez lesquels nous avons passé.

for the LORD our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed:

18 Et il a chassé toutes les nations, l’Amorrhéen habitant de la terre dans laquelle nous, nous sommes entrés. Nous servirons donc le Seigneur, parce que c’est lui qui est notre Dieu.

and the LORD drave out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God.

19 Et Josué dit au peuple: Vous ne pourrez pas servir le Seigneur; car c’est un Dieu saint et fort jaloux, et il ne pardonnera pas vos crimes et vos péchés.

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD; for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.

20 Si vous abandonnez le Seigneur et servez des dieux étrangers, il se tournera, vous affligera et vous renversera, après qu’il vous aura donné des biens.

If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

21 Le peuple répliqua à Josué: Il n’en sera nullement comme tu dis; mais nous servirons le Seigneur.

And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.

22 Et Josué au peuple: Vous êtes témoins, repartit-il, que vous choisissez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour le servir. Ils répondirent: Témoins.

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

23 Maintenant donc, reprit-il, ôtez les dieux étrangers d’au milieu de vous, et inclinez vos cœurs devant le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël.

Now therefore put away, [said he], the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD, the God of Israel.

24 Et le peuple répondit à Josué: C’est le Seigneur notre Dieu que nous servirons, et nous obéirons à ses préceptes.

And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.

25 Josué fit donc alliance en ce jour-là, et il proposa au peuple des préceptes et des ordonnances à Sichem.

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

26 Il écrivit aussi toutes ces paroles dans le livre de la loi du Seigneur, et il prit une très grande pierre, et il la plaça sous le chêne qui était dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur,

And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

27 Et il dit à tout le peuple: Voici que cette pierre vous sera en témoignage, qu’elle a entendu toutes les paroles que le Seigneur vous a dites, de peur que dans la suite vous ne vouliez le nier, et mentir au Seigneur votre Dieu.

And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

28 Et il renvoya le peuple chacun en sa possession.

So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

29 Et après cela mourut Josué, fils de Nun, à l’âge de cent dix ans;

And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

30 Et on l’ensevelit dans les limites de sa possession, à Tamnathsaré, qui est située sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, vers la partie septentrionale de la montagne de Gaas.

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

31 Ainsi, Israël servit le Seigneur durant tous les jours de Josué et des anciens qui vécurent longtemps après Josué, et qui connaissaient toutes les œuvres du Seigneur qu’il avait faites en Israël.

And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of the LORD, that he had wrought for Israel.

32 Les os de Joseph aussi, que les enfants d’Israël avaient emportés de l’Égypte, on les ensevelit à Sichem, dans la partie du champ que Jacob avait achetée des fils d’Hémor, père de Sichem, pour cent jeunes brebis, et qui devint la propriété des enfants de Joseph.

And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

33 Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, mourut aussi, et on l’ensevelit à Gabaath, ville de Phinéès, son fils, qui lui fut donnée en la montagne d’Ephraïm.

And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
