Josué 22
1 Dans le même temps, Josué appela les Rubénites et les Gadites et la demi-tribu de Manassé,
Then, called Joshua—for the Reubenites, and for the Gadites, —and for the half tribe of Manasseh;
2 Et leur dit: Vous avez fait tout ce que vous a ordonné Moïse, serviteur du Seigneur: à moi aussi, vous m’avez obéi en toutes choses,
and said unto them, Ye, have observed all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, —and have hearkened unto my voice, in all that I commanded you:
3 Et dans ce long temps, vous n’avez pas abandonné vos frères jusqu’au présent jour, gardant le commandement du Seigneur votre Dieu.
ye have not forsaken your brethren, these many days, unto this day, —but have kept the charge of the commandment of Yahweh your God.
4 Puis donc que le Seigneur votre Dieu a donné à vos frères le repos et la paix, comme il a promis, retournez et allez dans vos tabernacles et dans la terre de possession que vous a livrée Moïse, serviteur du Seigneur, au-delà du Jourdain;
Now, therefore, that Yahweh your God hath given rest unto your brethren, according as he spake unto them, —now, therefore, turn ye and get you to your homes within the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave unto you, over the Jordan.
5 En sorte seulement que vous gardiez attentivement et que vous accomplissiez par vos œuvres le commandement et la loi que vous a prescrite Moïse, serviteur du Seigneur, que vous aimiez le Seigneur votre Dieu, que vous marchiez dans toutes ses voies, que vous observiez ses commandements, que vous vous attachiez à lui, et que vous le serviez en tout votre cœur et en toute votre âme.
Only, take ye diligent heed, to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you—to love Yahweh your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, —and to serve him—with all your heart, and with all your soul.
6 Et Josué les bénit et les renvoya; et ils retournèrent dans leurs tabernacles.
So Joshua blessed them, —and sent them away, and they took their journey unto their homes.
7 Quant à la demi-tribu de Manassé, Moïse lui avait donné une possession en Basan; et c’est pour cela que Josué donna à l’autre demi-tribu un lot parmi ses autres frères, au-delà du Jourdain, vers la partie occidentale. Lorsqu’il les renvoya dans leurs tabernacles, après les avoir bénis,
Now, unto the [one] half tribe of Manesseh, had Moses given a possession in Bashan, and, unto the [other] half, did Joshua give possession with their brethren, over the Jordan, westward, —moreover also, when Joshua sent them away unto their homes, he blessed them,
8 Il leur dit: Retournez en vos demeures avec beaucoup de biens et de richesses, avec de l’argent et de l’or, de l’airain, du fer et beaucoup de vêtements; partagez avec vos frères le butin remporté sur les ennemis.
and spake unto them, saying—With much wealth, return ye unto your homes, even with very much cattle, with silver and with gold, and with copper and with iron, and with very much raiment, —divide ye the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
9 Ainsi, les enfants de Ruben, les enfants de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé s’éloignèrent des enfants d’Israël de Silo, qui est située en Chanaan, pour venir à Galaad, terre de leur possession, qu’ils avaient obtenue, selon le commandement du Seigneur par l’entremise de Moïse.
So the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh. returned and departed from the sons of Israel, from Shiloh, which was in the land of Canaan, —to go unto the land of Gilead, unto the land of their possession, wherein they had received their possessions, at the bidding of Yahweh by the hand of Moses.
10 Et lorsqu’ils furent revenus aux digues du Jourdain, dans la terre de Chanaan, ils bâtirent près du Jourdain un autel d’une immense grandeur.
And, when they came into the circles of the Jordan, which were in the land of Canaan, —then did the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh build there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of large dimensions,
11 Lorsque les enfants d’Israël l’eurent appris, et que des messagers fidèles leur eurent rapporté que les enfants de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé avaient bâti un autel dans la terre de Chanaan, sur les digues du Jourdain vis-à-vis des enfants d’Israël,
And the sons of Israel heard say, —Lo! the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in front of the land of Canaan, in the circles of the Jordan, in the region opposite the sons of Israel.
12 Ils s’assemblèrent tous à Silo, pour monter et combattre contre eux.
And, when the sons of Israel heard, all the assembly of the sons of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.
13 Et cependant ils envoyèrent vers eux, dans la terre de Galaad, Phinéès, fils d’Eléazar, le prêtre,
And the sons of Israel sent unto the sons of Reuben and unto the sons of Gad and unto the half tribe of Manasseh, within the land of Gilead, —Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest;
14 Et dix princes du peuple avec lui, un de chaque tribu.
and ten princes with him, one prince of an ancestral house for each of the tribes of Israel, —they being, severally heads of their ancestral houses, among the thousands of Israel.
15 Lesquels vinrent vers les enfants de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, dans la terre de Galaad, et leur dirent:
So they came in unto the sons of Reuben and unto the sons of Gad and unto the half tribe of Manasseh, within the land of Gilead, —and spake with them, saying:
16 Voici ce que mande tout le peuple du Seigneur: Quelle est cette transgression? Pourquoi avez-vous abandonné le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, bâtissant un autel sacrilège, et vous éloignant de son culte?
Thus, say all the assembly of Yahweh—What is this act of treachery which ye have committed against the God of Israel, that ye should turn back, to-day, from following Yahweh, —in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel, to-day, against Yahweh?
17 Est-ce peu pour vous, que vous ayez péché à Béelphégor, que jusqu’au présent jour la tache de ce crime demeure sur nous, et qu’un grand nombre d’entre le peuple ait succombé?
Too little for us, was the iniquity of Peor, from which we have not cleansed ourselves, unto this day, —although the plague came upon the assembly of Yahweh;
18 Et vous, aujourd’hui, vous avez abandonné le Seigneur, et demain contre tout Israël sa colère sévira.
but that, ye, must turn back to-day from following Yahweh, —though it must needs be that, if, ye, rebel to-day against Yahweh, then, to-morrow, with all the assembly of Israel, will he be wroth?
19 Que si vous croyez que la terre de votre possession est impure, passez à la terre dans laquelle est le tabernacle du Seigneur, et habitez parmi nous; seulement, ne vous éloignez point du Seigneur et de notre société, en bâtissant un autel, outre l’autel du Seigneur notre Dieu.
Howbeit, if, unclean, be the land of your possession, do ye on your part come over into the land of the possession of Yahweh, where abideth the habitation of Yahweh, and take your possession in our midst, —but, against Yahweh, do not rebel, nor, against us, rebel, by building yourselves an altar apart from the altar of Yahweh our God.
20 Est-ce qu’Achan, fils de Zaré, ne viola pas le commandement du Seigneur, et que la colère du Seigneur ne tomba pas sur tout le peuple d’Israël? Et lui était un seul homme; et plût à Dieu que, seul, il eût péri dans son crime!
Did not, Achan son of Zerah, commit an act of treachery, with a devoted thing, and, upon all the assembly of Israel, came wrath, —so that not, he—one man alone, died in his iniquity.
21 Et les enfants de Ruben et de Gad, et la demi-tribu d’Israël répondirent aux princes de la légation d’Israël:
Then responded the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, —and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel:
22 Le très fort Dieu Seigneur, le très fort Dieu Seigneur, lui-même le sait, et Israël aussi le comprendra: si c’est dans un esprit de prévarication que nous avons construit cet autel, que le Seigneur ne nous garde point, mais qu’il nous punisse présentement;
El-Elohim-Yahweh, El-Elohim-Yahweh, he knoweth, and, Israel, he, shall know, —if in rebellion, or if in treachery, against Yahweh, do not save us this day:
23 Et si nous l’avons fait dans l’intention d’y offrir des holocaustes, un sacrifice et des victimes pacifiques, que lui-même instruise et juge;
that we should build for ourselves an altar, to turn back from following Yahweh, —or, if that we might cause to go up thereon ascending-sacrifice or meal-offering, or if that we might offer thereon peace-offerings, let Yahweh himself require it;
24 Et si ce n’est pas plutôt dans la pensée et dans le but de dire: Demain, vos enfants diront à nos enfants: Qu’importe à vous et au Seigneur Dieu d’Israël?
if, indeed, we have not, rather, out of anxiety and of purpose, done this thing, saying, —. In time to come, your sons might speak to our sons, saying, What have ye to do with Yahweh, God of Israel;
25 Le Seigneur a mis une borne entre nous et vous, ô enfants de Ruben et enfants de Gad! le fleuve du Jourdain; et c’est pour cela que vous n’avez point de part dans le Seigneur. Et à cette occasion vos enfants détourneront nos enfants de la crainte du Seigneur. Ainsi nous avons mieux pensé,
seeing that, a boundary, hath Yahweh put between us and you, ye sons of Reuben and ye sons of Gad—even the Jordan, ye have no portion in Yahweh, —so might your sons cause our sons, to cease from revering Yahweh.
26 Et nous avons dit: Dressons-nous un autel, non pour offrir des holocaustes ou des victimes,
We said, therefore, Let us prepare, we pray you, to build us an altar, —not for ascending-offering, nor for sacrifice;
27 Mais en témoignage entre vous et nous, entre notre race et votre lignée, que nous servirons le Seigneur, qu’il est de notre droit d’offrir des holocaustes, des victimes et des hosties pacifiques, et qu’en aucune manière vos enfants ne diront demain à nos enfants: Il n’y a point de part pour vous dans le Seigneur.
but that, a witness, it may be between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we are to do the service of Yahweh, before him, with our ascending-offerings and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings, —that your sons may not say, in time to come, to our sons, Ye have no portion in Yahweh.
28 Que s’ils veulent le dire, ils leur répondront: Voici l’autel du Seigneur, qu’ont fait nos pères, non pour des holocaustes ni pour un sacrifice, mais en témoignage entre nous et vous.
Therefore said we, And it shall be, when they [so] say to us, or to our generations, in time to come, —that we will say—Behold ye the pattern of the altar of Yahweh, which our fathers made, not for ascending-offerings nor for sacrifice, but that, a witness, it might be between us and you.
29 Loin de nous, le crime de nous séparer du Seigneur, et de quitter ses traces, en dressant un autel, pour offrir des holocaustes, des sacrifices et des victimes, hors l’autel du Seigneur notre Dieu, qui a été dressé devant son tabernacle.
Far be it from us—that we should rebel against Yahweh, or turn back, to-day, from following Yahweh, by building an altar, for ascending-offering, or meal-offering or for sacrifice, —other than the altar of Yahweh our God, which is before his habitation.
30 Ces paroles entendues, Phinéès, le prêtre, et les princes de la légation d’Israël, qui étaient avec lui, s’apaisèrent, et accueillirent du meilleur cœur les paroles des enfants de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé.
And, when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the assembly, even the heads of the thousands of Israel who were with him, heard the words which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh spake, then was it well-pleasing in their eyes.
31 Alors Phinéès, le prêtre, fils d’Eléazar, leur dit: Maintenant nous savons que le Seigneur est avec nous, puisque vous êtes étrangers à cette prévarication, et que vous avez délivré les enfants d’Israël de la main du Seigneur.
And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said unto the sons of Reuben and unto the sons of Gad and unto the sons of Manasseh—To-day, we know that, in our midst, is Yahweh, in that ye have not committed, against Yahweh, this act of treachery, —now, have ye rescued the sons of Israel out of the hand of Yahweh.
32 Après cela, il revint avec les princes du peuple d’auprès des enfants de Ruben et de Gad, de la terre de Galaad, confins de Chanaan, vers les enfants d’Israël, et il leur fit son rapport.
So Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the princes returned from the sons of Reuben and from the sons of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, unto the sons of Israel, —and brought them back word.
33 Or, ce discours plut à tous ceux qui l’entendirent, et les enfants d’Israël louèrent Dieu, et ils ne dirent plus qu’ils monteraient contre eux, qu’ils les combattraient, et qu’ils détruiraient la terre de leur possession.
And the thing was well-pleasing in the eyes of the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel blessed God, —and spake not of going up against them, to war, to lay waste the land, wherein the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad dwelt.
34 Et les enfants de Ruben et les enfants de Gad appelèrent l’autel qu’ils avaient dressé, Notre témoignage que, c’est le Seigneur lui-même qui est Dieu.
So the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad named the altar [a Witness]: A witness, it is between us, That, Yahweh, is God.
