Jonas 1

1 Or, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jonas, fils d’Amathi, disant:

And the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

2 Lève-toi, et va dans Ninive la grande cité, et prêches-y, parce que sa malice est montée devant moi.

Arise, get thee to Nineveh the great city, and proclaim unto it, —that their wickedness, hath come up, before me.

3 Et Jonas se leva afin de fuir à Tharsis, de devant la face du Seigneur; et il descendit à Joppé, et il trouva un vaisseau qui allait à Tharsis, et il donna le prix de son passage, et il descendit dans le vaisseau, afin d’aller avec les autres à Tharsis, pour fuir de la face du Seigneur.

But Jonah arose to flee unto Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh, —and went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh.

4 Mais le Seigneur envoya un grand vent sur la mer, et il se fit une grande tempête sur la mer, et le vaisseau était en péril d’être brisé.

But, Yahweh, hurled a great wind against the sea, —and, there arose a mighty tempest in the sea, —and, the ship, thought to be broken in pieces,

5 Or les matelots craignirent, et les hommes crièrent vers leur Dieu, et ils jetèrent à la mer ce qui était dans le vaisseau, afin qu’il en fût allégé; or Jonas descendit au fond du vaisseau, et il dormait d’un sommeil profond.

Then were the mariners, afraid, and made outcry every man unto his own god, and they hurled the wares which were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them, —but, Jonah, had gone down into the hinder parts of the vessel, and had lain down, and fallen into a sound sleep.

6 Et le pilote s’approcha de lui, et lui dit: Pourquoi es-tu accablé par le sommeil? Lève-toi, invoque ton Dieu, peut-être que Dieu songera à nous et que nous ne périrons pas.

Then drew near unto him the shipmaster, and said to him, What meanest thou, O sound sleeper? Arise, cry unto thy God, Peradventure God will bethink himself of us, that we perish not.

7 Et chacun dit à son compagnon: Venez, et jetons les sorts pour savoir d’où ce malheur nous est venu. Et ils jetèrent les sorts, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.

And they said—every one unto his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may get to know for whose sake this calamity is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 Et ils lui dirent: Indique-nous à cause de qui ce malheur nous arrive; quelle est ton occupation? quel est ton pays et où vas-tu? ou bien à quel peuple appartiens-tu?

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose sake this calamity is upon us? What is thy business? and from whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

9 Et il leur dit: Je suis Hébreu, et je crains le Seigneur, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre.

And he said unto them, A Hebrew, am I, —and, Yahweh, the God of the heavens, do, I, revere, him who made the sea, and the dry land.

10 Et ces hommes craignirent d’une grande crainte, et ils lui dirent: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? (Car ces hommes surent qu’il fuyait la face du Seigneur, parce qu’il le leur avait appris.)

Then did the men revere with great reverence, and said unto him, What is it thou hast done? For the men knew that, away from the presence of Yahweh, he was fleeing, —for he had told them.

11 Et ils lui dirent: Que te ferons-nous, afin que la mer se calme pour nous? parce que la mer allait en grossissant

Then said they unto him, What shall we de to thee, that the sea may cease raging over us? For, the sea, was raging more and more.

12 Et il leur dit: Prenez-moi et jetez-moi dans la mer, et la mer se calmera pour vous, car je sais, moi, que c’est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous.

And he said unto them, Take me up, and hurl me into the sea, that the sea may cease raging over you, —for I do know that, for my sake, is this great tempest upon you.

13 Et les hommes ramaient afin de revenir vers la terre, et ils ne le pouvaient; car la mer allait en grossissant au-dessus d’eux.

Nevertheless the men, wrought hard, to bring it back unto the land, but could not, —for, the sea, was raging over them more and more.

14 Et ils crièrent au Seigneur, et ils dirent: Nous vous prions, Seigneur, de ne pas nous faire périra cause de l’âme de cet homme, et ne faites pas retomber sur nous un sang innocent, parce que vous, Seigneur, comme vous avez voulu, vous avez fait.

Then cried they unto Yahweh, and said, Ah now, Yahweh, pray let it not be that we perish for this man’s life, neither lay upon us innocent blood, —for, thou, O Yahweh, as thou hast pleased, hast ever done.

15 Et ils prirent Jonas, et ils le jetèrent dans la mer, et la mer apaisa sa furie.

So they took up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, —and the sea, left off, her roaring.

16 Les hommes craignirent d’une grande crainte le Seigneur, et ils immolèrent des hosties au Seigneur, et ils vouèrent des vœux

Then did the men revere Yahweh with a great reverence, —and offered sacrifice to Yahweh, and vowed vows.

17 Et le Seigneur prépara un grand poisson, afin qu’il engloutît Jonas; et Jonas fut dans le ventre du poisson pendant trois jours et trois nuits.

Now Yahweh had appointed a great fish, to swallow up Jonah, —and Jonah was in the belly of the fish, three days and three nights.
