Jonas 3
1 Et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée une seconde fois à Jonas, disant:
The word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying,
2 Lève-toi, et va dans Ninive la grande cité, et prêches-y ce que moi je te dis de prêcher.
“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I command you to give.”
3 Et Jonas se leva, et alla à Ninive selon la parole du Seigneur; or Ninive était une grande cité de trois jours de chemin.
So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a very large city, one of three days' journey.
4 Jonas commença à entrer dans la cité, à faire le chemin d’un jour; et il cria, et il dit: Encore quarante jours et Ninive sera renversée.
Jonah began to enter the city and after a day's journey he called out and said, “In forty days Nineveh will be overthrown.”
5 Les hommes de Ninive crurent en Dieu, et ils publièrent un jeûne, et se revêtirent de cilices, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit.
The people of Nineveh believed God and they proclaimed a fast. They all put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them down to the least of them.
6 Et le bruit en parvint au roi de Ninive; et il se leva de son trône, et quitta son vêtement, et se revêtit d’un sac, et s’assit sur la cendre.
Soon the news reached the king of Nineveh. He rose up from his throne, took off his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 Et il cria et dit dans Ninive par la bouche du roi et de ses princes, disant: Que les hommes et les animaux, et les bœufs et les troupeaux de menu bétail ne goûtent rien; et qu’ils ne paissent point, et ne boivent point d’eau.
He sent out a proclamation that said, “In Nineveh, by the authority of the king and his nobles, let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not eat, nor drink water.
8 Et que les hommes se couvrent de sacs ainsi que les animaux, et qu’ils crient au Seigneur avec force, et que chacun se convertisse de sa voie mauvaise, et de l’iniquité qui est en leurs mains.
But let both man and animal be covered with sackcloth and let them cry out loudly to God. Let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
9 Qui sait si Dieu ne reviendra pas et ne pardonnera pas; et s’il ne se détournera pas de la fureur de sa colère, et nous ne périrons pas?
Who knows? God may relent and change his mind and turn away from his fierce anger so that we do not perish.”
10 Et Dieu vit leurs œuvres, il vit qu’ils étaient convertis de leur voie mauvaise; et Dieu eut pitié d’eux, touchant le mal qu’il avait dit qu’il leur ferait, et il ne le fit pas.
God saw what they did, that they turned from their evil ways. So then God changed his mind about the punishment that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
