1 Après cela Jésus parcourait la Galilée: car il ne voulait point parcourir la Judée, parce que les Juifs cherchaient à le faire mourir.
And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Or approchait la fête des Juifs, la Scénopégie.
Now the tabernacles, the feast of the Jews, was near.
3 Ses frères donc lui dirent: Pars d’ici et va en Judée, afin que tes disciples voient, eux aussi, les œuvres que tu fais.
His brethren therefore said to him, Remove hence and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou doest;
4 Car personne n’agit en secret, lorsqu’il cherche lui-même a paraître en public: puisque tu fais de telles choses, manifeste-toi au monde.
for no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be [known] in public. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world:
5 Car ses frères mêmes ne croyaient pas en lui.
for neither did his brethren believe on him.
6 Mais Jésus leur dit: Mon temps n’est pas encore venu, mais votre temps est toujours prêt.
Jesus therefore says to them, My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready.
7 Le monde ne peut pas vous haïr: pour moi, il me hait, parce que je rends de lui ce témoignage que ses œuvres sont mauvaises.
The world cannot hate you, but me it hates, because I bear witness concerning it that its works are evil.
8 Allez, vous, à cette fête: pour moi je n’y vais point, parce que mon temps n’est pas encore accompli.
Ye, go ye up to this feast. I go not up to this feast, for my time is not yet fulfilled.
9 Ce qu’ayant dit, il demeura en Galilée.
Having said these things to them he abode in Galilee.
10 Mais lorsque ses frères furent partis, il alla aussi lui-même à la fête, non publiquement, mais comme en cachette.
But when his brethren had gone up, then he himself also went up to the feast, not openly, but as in secret.
11 Les Juifs donc le cherchaient pendant la fête et disaient: Où est-il?
The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 Et il y avait une grande rumeur dans le peuple à son sujet. Les uns disaient: En effet, c’est un homme de bien; mais d’autres disaient: Non, car il séduit la foule.
And there was much murmuring concerning him among the crowds. Some said, He is [a] good [man]; others said, No; but he deceives the crowd.
13 Cependant personne ne parlait de lui ouvertement par crainte des Juifs.
However, no one spoke openly concerning him on account of [their] fear of the Jews.
14 Or, vers le milieu de la fête, Jésus monta au temple, et il enseignait.
But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
15 Et les Juifs s’étonnaient, disant: Comment celui-ci sait-il les Ecritures, puisqu’il ne les a point apprises?
The Jews therefore wondered, saying, How knows this [man] letters, having never learned?
16 Jésus leur répondit et dit: Ma doctrine n’est pas de moi, mais de celui qui m’a envoyé.
Jesus therefore answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but [that] of him that has sent me.
17 Si quelqu’un veut faire sa volonté, il connaîtra, touchant ma doctrine, si elle est de lui ou si je parle de moi-même.
If any one desire to practise his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is of God, or [that] I speak from myself.
18 Celui qui parle de lui-même cherche sa propre gloire; mais qui cherche la gloire de celui qui l’a envoyé, celui-là est vrai, et il n’y a point d’injustice en lui.
He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.
19 Moïse ne vous a-t-il pas donné la loi? Cependant nul de vous ne pratique la loi.
Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?
20 Pourquoi cherchez-vous à me faire mourir? Le peuple répondit et dit: Tu es possédé du démon: qui cherche à te faire mourir?
The crowd answered [and said], Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?
21 Jésus répliqua et leur dit: J’ai fait une seule œuvre, et vous êtes tous étonnés.
Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.
22 Cependant Moïse vous a donné la circoncision (bien qu’elle ne soit pas de Moïse, mais des patriarches): et vous circoncisez le jour du sabbat.
Therefore Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye circumcise a man on sabbath.
23 Or, si un homme reçoit la circoncision le jour du sabbat, afin que la loi de Moïse ne soit point violée, comment vous indignez-vous contre moi, parce que j’ai rendu un homme sain tout entier un jour de sabbat?
If a man receives circumcision on sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be violated, are ye angry with me because I have made a man entirely sound on sabbath?
24 Ne jugez point sur l’apparence, mais rendez un juste jugement.
Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.
25 Quelques-uns de Jérusalem disaient donc: N’est-ce pas là celui qu’ils cherchent à faire mourir?
Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
26 Et voilà qu’il parle publiquement, et ils ne lui disent rien. Les chefs du peuple auraient-ils réellement reconnu que c’est lui qui est le Christ?
and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ?
27 Cependant pour celui-ci, nous savons d’où il est: mais quand le Christ viendra, personne ne saura d’où il est.
But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.
28 Ainsi Jésus parlait à haute voix dans le temple, enseignant et disant: Et vous savez qui je suis, et vous savez d’où je suis; et je ne suis point venu de moi-même: mais il est vrai, celui qui m’a envoyé, et que vous ne connaissez point.
Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.
29 Moi je le connais, parce que je suis de lui, et que c’est lui qui m’a envoyé.
I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.
30 Ils cherchaient donc à le prendre; mais personne ne mit la main sur lui, parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.
They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.
31 Mais beaucoup d’entre le peuple crurent en lui, et ils disaient: Le Christ, quand il viendra, fera-t-il plus de miracles que celui-ci n’en fait?
But many of the crowd believed on him, and said, Will the Christ, when he comes, do more signs than those which this [man] has done?
32 Les pharisiens entendirent le peuple murmurant ainsi à son sujet; et les princes des prêtres et les pharisiens envoyèrent des archers pour le prendre.
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they might take him.
33 Jésus leur dit: Je suis encore un peu de temps avec vous; et je m’en vais à celui qui m’a envoyé.
Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him that has sent me.
34 Vous me chercherez et ne me trouverez pas; et où je suis vous ne pouvez venir.
Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me], and where I am ye cannot come.
35 Les Juifs dirent entre eux: Où doit donc aller celui-ci, que nous ne le trouverons point? doit-il aller chez les nations dispersées, et enseigner les gentils?
The Jews therefore said to one another, Where is he about to go that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
36 Quelle est cette parole qu’il a dite: Vous me chercherez et ne me trouverez point: et où je suis vous ne pouvez venir?
What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me]; and where I am ye cannot come?
37 Le dernier jour de la fête, qui est le plus solennel, Jésus se tenait debout et s’écriait, disant: Si quelqu’un a soif, qu’il vienne à moi, et qu’il boive.
In the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.
38 Celui qui croit en moi, comme dit l’Ecriture, des fleuves d’eau vive couleront de son sein.
He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 Il disait cela de l’Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui croyaient en lui; car l’Esprit n’avait pas encore été donné, parce que Jésus n’était pas encore glorifié.
But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for [the] Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Parmi donc cette multitude qui avait entendu ces paroles: les uns disaient: Celui-ci est vraiment le prophète.
[Some] out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.
41 D’autres disaient: Celui-ci est le Christ. Mais quelques uns disaient: Est-ce de la Galilée que vient le Christ?
Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?
42 L’Ecriture ne dit-elle pas que c’est de la race de David et du bourg de Bethléem, où était David, que vient le Christ?
Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 Il s’éleva donc une dissension dans le peuple à cause de lui.
There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.
44 Quelques-uns d’eux voulaient le prendre, mais aucun d’eux ne mit la main sur lui.
But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.
45 Ainsi les archers revinrent vers les pontifes et les pharisiens, qui leur demandèrent: Pourquoi ne l’avez-vous pas amené?
The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?
46 Les archers répondirent: Jamais homme n’a parlé comme cet homme.
The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man [speaks].
47 Mais les pharisiens leur répliquèrent: Avez-vous été séduits, vous aussi?
The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?
48 Est-il quelqu’un d’entre les chefs du peuple ou d’entre les pharisiens, qui ait cru en lui?
Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?
49 Mais cette foule, qui ne connaît pas la loi, ce sont des maudits.
But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.
50 Nicodème leur dit (c’était celui qui était venu de nuit à Jésus, et qui était l’un d’entre eux):
Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),
51 Est-ce que notre loi condamne un homme sans qu’auparavant on l’ait entendu, et sans qu’on sache ce qu’il a fait?
Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?
52 Ils répondirent, et lui dirent: Est-ce que tu es aussi Galiléen? Lis avec soin les Ecritures, et tu verras: De la Galilée prophète ne surgit.
They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.
53 Et ils s’en retournaient chacun en sa maison.
And every one went to his home.
