1 Après cela Jésus s’en alla de l’autre côté de la mer de Galilée, c’est-à-dire de Tibériade;
After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
2 Et une grande multitude le suivait, parce qu’ils voyaient les miracles qu’il faisait sur ceux qui étaient malades.
And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he performed on them that were diseased.
3 Jésus monta donc sur la montagne, et là il était assis avec ses disciples.
And Jesus went up on a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
4 Cependant approchait la Pâque, jour de la fête des Juifs.
And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
5 Jésus donc ayant levé les yeux et vu qu’une très grande multitude était venue à lui, dit à Philippe: Où achèterons-nous des pains, pour que ceux-ci mangent?
When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come to him, he saith to Philip, Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
6 Or il disait cela pour l’éprouver; car pour lui il savait ce qu’il devait faire.
And this he said to test him: for he himself knew what he would do.
7 Philippe lui répondit: Deux cents deniers de pain ne leur suffiraient pas pour que chacun d’eux en eût même un petit morceau.
Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
8 Un de ses disciples, André, frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit:
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith to him,
9 Il y a ici un petit garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons: mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde?
There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
10 Jésus dit donc: Faites asseoir ces hommes. Or il y avait beaucoup d’herbe en ce lieu. Ces hommes s’assirent donc au nombre d’environ cinq mille.
And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 Alors Jésus prit les pains, et quand il eut rendu grâces, il les distribua à ceux qui étaient assis; et de même des poissons, autant qu’ils en voulaient.
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were sitting down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
12 Lorsqu’ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: Amassez les morceaux qui sont restés, pour qu’ils ne se perdent pas.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost.
13 Ils les amassèrent donc, et remplirent douze paniers de morceaux des cinq pains d’orge qui restèrent à ceux qui avaient mangé.
Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten.
14 Or ces hommes, ayant vu le miracle que Jésus avait fait, disaient: Celui-ci est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde.
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus performed, said, This is truly that prophet that should come into the world.
15 Et Jésus, ayant connu qu’ils devaient venir pour l’enlever et le faire roi, s’enfuit de nouveau sur la montagne tout seul.
When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again to a mountain himself alone.
16 Dès que le soir fut venu, ses disciples descendirent à la mer.
And when evening had now come, his disciples went down to the sea,
17 Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, ils vinrent de l’autre côté de la mer, vers Capharnaüm. Or les ténèbres s’étaient déjà faites, et Jésus n’était pas venu à eux.
And entered into a boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
18 Cependant, au souffle d’un grand vent, la mer s’enflait.
And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19 Après donc qu’ils eurent ramé environ vingt-cinq ou trente stades, ils virent Jésus marchant sur la mer et s’approchant de la barque, et ils eurent peur.
So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat: and they were afraid.
20 Mais il leur dit: C’est moi, ne craignez point.
But he saith to them, It is I; be not afraid.
21 C’est pourquoi ils voulurent le prendre dans la barque, et aussitôt la barque se trouva à la terre où ils allaient.
Then they willingly received him into the boat: and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
22 Le jour suivant, le peuple, qui se tenait de l’autre côté de la mer, observa qu’il n’y avait eu là qu’une seule barque, que Jésus n’était point entré avec ses disciples dans cette barque, mais que ses disciples seuls étaient partis;
The day following, when the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one into which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone;
23 Cependant, d’autres barques vinrent de Tibériade, près du lieu où ils avaient mangé le pain, le Seigneur ayant rendu grâces.
( However there came other boats from Tiberias near to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks: )
24 Quand le peuple eut vu que Jésus n’était point là, ni ses disciples, il monta lui aussi dans les barques et vint à Capharnaüm, cherchant Jésus.
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
25 Et l’ayant trouvé de l’autre côté de la mer, ils lui dirent: Maître, comment êtes-vous venu ici?
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou here?
26 Jésus leur répondit, et dit: En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des miracles, mais parce que vous avez mangé des pains et avez été rassasiés.
Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Travaillez, non pas en vue de la nourriture qui périt, mais de celle qui demeure pour la vie éternelle, et que le Fils de l’homme vous donnera; car Dieu le Père l’a scellée de son sceau. (aiōnios g166)
Labour not for the food which perisheth, but for that food which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give to you: for him hath God the Father sealed. (aiōnios g166)
28 Ils lui demandèrent: Que ferons-nous pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu?
Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?
29 Jésus répondit et leur dit: L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé.
Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 Ils lui repartirent: Quel miracle donc faites-vous pour que nous voyions et que nous croyions en vous?
They said therefore to him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, comme il est écrit: Il leur a donné du pain du ciel à manger.
Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Jésus leur dit donc: En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, Moïse ne vous a point donné le pain du ciel, mais c’est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain du ciel.
Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 Car le pain de Dieu est celui qui descend du ciel, et donne la vie au monde.
For the bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world.
34 Ils lui dirent donc: Seigneur, donnez-nous toujours ce pain.
Then said they to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 Et Jésus leur dit: C’est moi qui suis le pain de vie: qui vient à moi n’aura pas faim, et qui croit en moi n’aura jamais soif.
And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 Mais je vous l’ai dit, vous m’avez vu, et vous ne croyez point.
But I said to you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37 Tout ce que me donne mon Père viendra à moi, et celui qui vient à moi, je ne le rejetterai pas dehors:
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will by no means cast out.
38 Parce que je suis descendu du ciel, non pour faire ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.
For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 Or c’est la volonté de mon Père qui m’a envoyé, que de tout ce qu’il m’a donné, rien ne se perde, mais que je le ressuscite au dernier jour.
And this is the Father’s will who hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise them up again at the last day.
40 C’est la volonté de mon Père qui m’a envoyé, que quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. (aiōnios g166)
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
41 Cependant les Juifs murmuraient contre lui, parce qu’il avait dit: Moi je suis le pain vivant qui suis descendu du ciel,
The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
42 Et ils disaient: N’est-ce pas là Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? Comment donc dit-il: Je suis descendu du ciel?
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
43 Mais Jésus répondit et leur dit: Ne murmurez point entre vous;
Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44 Nul ne peut venir à moi, si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire; et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
No man can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45 Il est écrit dans les prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu. Quiconque a entendu la voix du Père et a appris, vient à moi.
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught from God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned from the Father, cometh to me.
46 Non que personne ait vu le Père, si ce n’est celui qui est de Dieu; car celui-là a vu le Père.
Not that any man hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.
Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (aiōnios g166)
48 C’est moi qui suis le pain de la vie.
I am that bread of life.
49 Vos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert et sont morts.
Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50 Voici le pain qui descend du ciel, afin que si quelqu’un en mange, il ne meure point.
This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat of it, and not die.
51 Je suis le pain vivant, moi qui suis descendu du ciel. Si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement; et le pain que je donnerai, c’est ma chair pour la vie du monde. (aiōn g165)
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man shall eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. (aiōn g165)
52 Les Juifs donc disputaient entre eux, disant: Comment celui-ci peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger?
The Jews therefore began to dispute among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Et Jésus leur dit: En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: Si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l’homme, et ne buvez son sang, vous n’aurez point la vie en vous.
Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. (aiōnios g166)
Whoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
55 Car ma chair est vraiment nourriture et mon sang est vraiment breuvage;
For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57 Comme mon Père qui est vivant m’a envoyé, et que moi je vis par mon Père, ainsi celui qui me mange vivra aussi par moi.
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58 Voici le pain qui est descendu du ciel. Ce n’est pas comme vos pères, qui ont mangé la manne et sont morts. Celui qui mange ce pain vivra éternellement. (aiōn g165)
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. (aiōn g165)
59 Il dit ces choses, enseignant dans la synagogue, à Capharnaüm.
These things he said in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60 Mais beaucoup de ses disciples l’ayant entendu, dirent: Ces paroles sont dures et qui peut les écouter?
Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61 Or Jésus sachant en lui-même que ses disciples en murmuraient leur dit: Cela vous scandalise?
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said to them, Doth this offend you?
62 Et si vous voyiez le Fils de l’homme montant où il était auparavant?
What if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63 C’est l’esprit qui vivifie; la chair ne sert de rien: or les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit de vie.
It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64 Mais il en est parmi vous quelques-uns qui ne croient point. Car Jésus savait, dès le commencement, qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui devait le trahir.
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who he was that would betray him.
65 Et il disait: C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, s’il ne lui est donné par mon Père.
And he said, Therefore I said to you, that no man can come to me, except it were given to him by my Father.
66 Dès lors, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent, et ils n’allaient plus avec lui.
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67 Jésus donc dit aux douze: Et vous, voulez-vous aussi vous en aller?
Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68 Mais Simon-Pierre lui répondit: Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Vous avez des paroles de vie éternelle; (aiōnios g166)
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
69 Pour nous, nous avons cru, et nous avons connu que vous êtes le Christ, le Fils de Dieu.
And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
70 Jésus leur répondit: N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis tous les douze? Cependant l’un de vous est un démon.
Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71 Il parlait de Judas Iscariote, fils de Simon: car c’était lui qui devait le trahir, quoiqu’il fût un des douze.
He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he that was to betray him, being one of the twelve.
