1 Alors donc Pilate prit Jésus et le fit flageller.
Then Pilate, therefore, took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 Et les soldats ayant tressé une couronne d’épines, la mirent sur sa tête, et le couvrirent d’un vêtement de pourpre.
And, the soldiers, plaiting a crown out of thorns, placed it upon his head, and, a purple robe, cast they about him;
3 Et ils venaient à lui et disaient: Salut, roi des Juifs; et ils lui donnaient des soufflets.
and kept coming unto him, and saying—Joy to thee! O King of the Jews!—and were giving unto him smart blows.
4 Pilate sortit donc de nouveau, et leur dit: Voici que je vous l’amène dehors, afin que vous sachiez que je ne trouve en lui aucune cause de mort.
And Pilate went forth again outside, and saith unto them—See! I lead him unto you outside, that ye may take knowledge, that, no single fault, do I find in him.
5 (Ainsi Jésus sortit, portant la couronne d’épines et le vêtement de pourpre.) Et Pilate leur dit: Voilà l’homme.
Jesus, therefore, came forth outside, wearing the thorn crown, and the purple mantle. And he saith unto them—Lo! the Man!
6 Quand les pontifes et les archers remuent vu, ils criaient, disant: Crucifiez-le, crucifiez-le! Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et le crucifiez, car moi, je ne trouve pas en lui une cause de mort.
When, therefore, the High-priests and the officers saw him, they cried aloud, saying—Crucify! Crucify! Pilate saith unto them—Ye, take him, and crucify; for, I, find not in him, a fault.
7 Les Juifs lui répondirent: Nous, nous avons une loi, et, selon cette loi, il doit mourir, parce qu’il s’est fait Fils de Dieu.
The Jews answered him—We, have, a law, and, according to the law, he ought to die, because, Son of God, himself, he made.
8 Lors donc que Pilate eut entendu cette parole, il craignit davantage.
When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid;
9 Et, rentrant dans le prétoire, il dit à Jésus: D’où es-tu? Mais Jésus ne lui fit point de réponse.
and entered into the judgment-hall again, and saith unto Jesus—Whence, art, thou? But, Jesus, gave him no, answer.
10 Pilate lui dit donc: Tu ne me parles pas? Ignores-lu que j’ai le pouvoir de te crucifier et le pouvoir de te délivrer?
Pilate, therefore, saith unto him—Unto me, dost thou not speak? Knowest thou not, that, authority, have I to release thee, and, authority, have I to crucify thee?
11 Jésus répondit: Tu n’aurais sur moi aucun pouvoir, s’il ne t’avait été donné d’en haut. C’est pourquoi celui qui m’a livré à toi a un plus grand péché.
Jesus answered him—Thou couldst have had no authority against me, at all, if it had not been given unto thee from above. Therefore, he that delivered me unto thee, hath, greater sin.
12 Et, dès ce moment, Pilate cherchait à le délivrer. Mais les Juifs criaient, disant: Si vous le délivrez, vous n’êtes pas ami de César; car quiconque se fait roi, se déclare contre César.
For this cause, Pilate, began seeking to release him; but, the Jews, cried aloud saying—If this man thou release, thou art not a friend of Caesar, for, every one who maketh himself king, speaketh against Caesar.
13 Or Pilate ayant entendu ces paroles, fil amener Jésus dehors, et il s’assit sur son tribunal, au lieu qui est appelé Lithostrotos, et en hébreu Gabbatha.
Pilate, therefore, when he heard these words, led Jesus outside, and sat down upon a raised seat, in a place called Pavement, but, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 C’était la préparation de la pâque, vers la sixième heure, et Pilate dit aux Juifs: Voilà votre roi.
Now it was the preparation of the passover, —it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews—See! your King!
15 Mais eux criaient: Otez-le, ôtez-le du monde, crucifiez-le! Pilate leur demanda: Crucifierai-je votre roi? Les pontifes répondirent: Nous n’avons de roi que César.
They, therefore, cried aloud—Away! away! Crucify him! Pilate saith unto them—Your king, shall I crucify? The High-priests answered—We have no king but Caesar!
16 Alors il le leur livra pour être crucifié. Ils prirent donc Jésus et l’emmenèrent.
Then, therefore, he delivered him up unto them, that he might be crucified. They took possession, therefore, of Jesus.
17 Ainsi, portant sa croix, il alla au lieu qui est appelé Calvaire, et en hébreu Golgotha,
And, bearing for himself the cross, he went forth unto the so-called Skull-place, which is named, in Hebrew, Golgotha;
18 Où ils le crucifièrent, et avec lui deux autres, l’un d’un côté, l’autre de l’autre, et Jésus au milieu.
where, him, they crucified; and, with him, other two, on this side and on that, and, in the midst, Jesus.
19 Pilate fit une inscription et la mit sur la croix. Or il était écrit: Jésus de Nazareth, le roi des Juifs.
And Pilate wrote a title also, and placed on the cross; and there was written—JESUS, THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Beaucoup de Juifs lurent cette inscription, parce que le lieu où Jésus avait été crucifié se trouvait près de la ville, et qu’elle était écrite en hébreu, en grec et en latin.
This title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because, near, was the place to the city where Jesus was crucified; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek.
21 Les pontifes des Juifs dirent donc à Pilate: N’écrivez point: Le roi des Juifs; mais: Parce qu’il a dit: Je suis le roi des Juifs.
The High-priests of the Jews, therefore, were saying unto Pilate—Do not be writing, The King of the Jews; but that, he, said: King of the Jews, I am.
22 Pilate répondit: Ce que j’ai écrit, je l’ai écrit.
Pilate answered—What I have written, I have written!
23 Cependant les soldats, après l’avoir crucifié, prirent ses vêtements (et ils en firent quatre parts, une part pour chaque soldat), et sa tunique. Or la tunique était sans couture, d’un seul tissu d’en haut jusqu’en bas.
The soldiers, therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, unto each soldier, a part; also the tunic. Howbeit, the tunic was without seam, from above, woven throughout.
24 Ils se dirent donc l’un à l’autre: Ne la divisons point, mais tirons au sort à qui elle sera. Afin que s’accomplît l’Ecriture disant: Ils se sont partagés mes vêtements, et sur ma robe ils ont jeté le sort. Les soldats firent donc cela.
They said, therefore, one to another—Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose, it shall be; —that, the Scripture, might be fulfilled—They parted my garments amongst them, and, for my vestment, they cast lots: —yes verily, the soldiers, these things did.
25 Cependant étaient debout près de la croix de Jésus, sa mère, et la sœur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Cléophas, et Marie-Madeleine.
And there were standing by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary the Magdalene.
26 Lors donc que Jésus eut vu sa mère, et, près d’elle, le disciple qu’il aimait, il dit à sa mère: Femme, voilà votre fils.
Jesus, therefore, seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved, saith unto his mother—O woman, see! thy son!
27 Ensuite il dit au disciple: Voilà ta mère. Et depuis cette heure-là, le disciple la prit avec lui.
Afterwards, he saith unto the disciple—See! thy mother! And, from that hour, the disciple took her unto his own home.
28 Après cela, Jésus sachant que tout était consommé, afin d’accomplir l’Ecriture, dit: J’ai soif.
After this, Jesus, knowing that, already, all things, have been finished, —that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith—I thirst!
29 Or il y avait là un vase plein de vinaigre. C’est pourquoi les soldats entourant d’hysope une éponge pleine de vinaigre, la présentèrent à sa bouche.
A vessel, was standing, full of vinegar. A sponge, therefore, full of the vinegar, put about, hyssop, brought they unto his mouth.
30 Lors donc que Jésus eut pris le vinaigre, il dit: Tout est consommé. Et, la tête inclinée, il rendit l’esprit.
When, therefore, he had received the vinegar, Jesus said—It is finished! And, bowing his head, delivered up his spirit.
31 Les Juifs donc (parce que c’était la préparation), afin que les corps ne demeurassent pas en croix le jour du sabbat (car ce jour de sabbat était très solennel), prièrent Pilate qu’on leur rompît les jambes et qu’on les enlevât.
The Jews, therefore, since it was, a preparation, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross during the Sabbath, —for that Sabbath day was, great, requested Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they be taken away.
32 Les soldats vinrent donc, et ils rompirent les jambes du premier, puis du second qui avait été crucifié avec lui.
The soldiers, therefore, came; and, of the first, indeed, brake the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him, —
33 Mais lorsqu’ils vinrent à Jésus, et qu’ils le virent déjà mort, ils ne rompirent point les jambes;
but coming, unto Jesus, when they saw that, already, he was dead, they brake not his legs; —
34 Seulement un des soldats ouvrit son côté avec une lance, et aussitôt il en sortit du sang et de l’eau.
but, one of the soldiers, with a spear, pierced, his side, and there came out, straightway, blood and water.
35 Et celui qui l’a vu en a rendu témoignage, et son témoignage est vrai. Et il sait qu’il dit vrai, afin que vous croyiez aussi.
And, he that hath seen, hath borne witness; and, genuine, is his testimony, and, he, knoweth that he saith, what is true, that, ye also, may believe.
36 Car ces choses ont été faites, afin que s’accomplît l’Ecriture: Vous n’en briserez aucun os.
For these things came to pass, that, the Scripture, might be fulfilled—A bone thereof, shall not be crushed;
37 Et dans un autre endroit, l’Ecriture dit encore: Ils porteront leurs regards sur celui qu’ils ont transpercé.
and, again, a different Scripture, saith—They shall look unto him whom they pierced.
38 Après cela, Joseph d’Arimathie (qui était disciple de Jésus, mais en secret, par crainte des Juifs) demanda à Pilate de prendre le corps de Jésus. Et Pilate le permit. Il vint donc, et enleva le corps de Jésus.
But, after these things, Joseph from Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but having kept it secret for fear of the Jews, requested Pilate, that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission. He came, therefore, and took away his body.
39 Vint aussi Nicodème, qui était d’abord venu trouver Jésus pendant la nuit; il apportait une composition de myrrhe et d’aloès d’environ cent livres.
There came, moreover, Nicodemus also, —he that came unto him by night at the first, —bearing a roll of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds’ weight.
40 Ils prirent donc le corps de Jésus, et l’enveloppèrent dans des linges avec des parfums, comme les Juifs ont coutume d’ensevelir.
So they received the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen-bandages with the spices, —just as it is, a custom, with the Jews to prepare for burial.
41 Or il y avait au lieu où il fut crucifié, un jardin, et dans le jardin, un sépulcre neuf, où personne encore n’avait été mis.
Now there was, in the place where he was crucified, a garden; and, in the garden, an unused tomb, wherein, as yet, no one had been laid.
42 Là donc, à cause de la préparation des Juifs, et parce que le sépulcre était proche, ils déposèrent Jésus.
So, there, by reason of the preparation of the Jews, because, near, was the tomb, laid they Jesus.
