1 Lorsqu’il eut dit ces choses, Jésus s’en alla avec ses disciples au-delà du torrent de Cédron, où il y avait un jardin dans lequel il entra, lui et ses disciples.
These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,
2 Or Judas, qui le trahissait, connaissait aussi ce lieu, parce que Jésus y était venu souvent avec ses disciples.
and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.
3 Judas ayant donc pris la cohorte et des archers des pontifes et des pharisiens, vint là avec des lanternes, des torches et des armes.
Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;
4 Mais Jésus sachant tout ce qui devait lui arriver, s’avança et leur demanda: Qui cherchez vous?
Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, 'Whom do ye seek?'
5 Ils lui répondirent: Jésus de Nazareth, Jésus leur dit: C’est moi. Or avec eux se trouvait aussi Judas, qui le trahissait.
they answered him, 'Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, 'I am [he];' — and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; —
6 Mais dès qu’il leur eut dit: C’est moi, ils furent renversés, et tombèrent par terre.
when, therefore, he said to them — 'I am [he],' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.
7 Il leur demanda donc de nouveau: Qui cherchez-vous? Ils répondirent: Jésus de Nazareth.
Again, therefore, he questioned them, 'Whom do ye seek?' and they said, 'Jesus the Nazarene;'
8 Jésus reprit: Je vous ai dit que c’est moi. Mais si c’est moi que vous cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci.
Jesus answered, 'I said to you that I am [he]; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'
9 Afin que fût accomplie la parole qu’il avait dite: Je n’ai perdu aucun de ceux que vous m’avez donnés.
that the word might be fulfilled that he said — 'Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.'
10 Alors Simon Pierre, qui avait une épée, la tira, et frappant le serviteur du grand prêtre, il lui coupa l’oreille droite. Or le nom de ce serviteur était Malchus.
Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest's servant, and cut off his right ear — and the name of the servant was Malchus —
11 Mais Jésus dit à Pierre: Remets ton épée dans le fourreau. Et le calice que mon Père m’a donné, ne le boirai-je donc point?
Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, 'Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?'
12 Alors la cohorte, le tribun et les archers des Juifs se saisirent de Jésus et le lièrent;
The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,
13 Puis ils l’emmenèrent d’abord chez Anne, parce qu’il était le beau-père de Caïphe, qui était le pontife de cette année-là.
and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,
14 Or Caïphe était celui qui avait donné ce conseil aux Juifs: Il est avantageux qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple.
and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.
15 Cependant Simon Pierre suivait Jésus, et aussi l’autre disciple. Or comme ce disciple était connu du pontife, il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du pontife.
And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,
16 Mais Pierre se tenait dehors à la porte. C’est pourquoi l’autre disciple, qui était connu du pontife, sortit, et parla à la portière, et elle fit entrer Pierre.
and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.
17 Alors cette servante, qui gardait la porte, demanda à Pierre: Et toi, n’es-tu pas aussi des disciples de cet homme? Il lui répondit: Je n’en suis point.
Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, 'Art thou also of the disciples of this man?' he saith, 'I am not;'
18 Or les serviteurs et les archers se tenaient auprès du feu, et se chauffaient, parce qu’il faisait froid; et Pierre était aussi avec eux debout et se chauffant.
and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.
19 Cependant le pontife interrogea Jésus touchant ses disciples et sa doctrine.
The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;
20 Jésus lui répondit: J’ai parlé publiquement au monde; j’ai toujours enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le temple, où tous les Juifs s’assemblent, et en secret je n’ai rien dit.
Jesus answered him, 'I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;
21 Pourquoi m’interroges-tu? Interroge ceux qui ont entendu ce que je leur ai dit; voilà ceux qui savent ce que j’ai enseigné.
why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.'
22 Après qu’il eut dit cela, un des archers là présent donna un soufflet à Jésus, disant: Est-ce ainsi que tu réponds au pontife?
And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, 'Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?'
23 Jésus lui répondit: Si j’ai mal parlé, rends témoignage du mal; mais si j’ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?
Jesus answered him, 'If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?'
24 Et Anne l’envoya lié à Caïphe, le grand prêtre.
Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.
25 Cependant Simon Pierre était là debout et se chauffant. Ils lui dirent donc: Et toi, n’es-tu pas aussi de ses disciples? Il le nia et dit: Je n’en suis point.
And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, 'Art thou also of his disciples?' he denied, and said, 'I am not.'
26 Un des serviteurs du pontife, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l’oreille, lui dit: Ne t’ai-je pas vu dans le jardin avec lui?
One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, 'Did not I see thee in the garden with him?'
27 Et Pierre le nia de nouveau; et aussitôt un coq chanta.
again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.
28 Ils amenèrent donc Jésus de chez Caïphe dans le prétoire. Or c’était le matin, et eux n’entrèrent point dans le prétoire, afin de ne point se souiller et de pouvoir manger la pâque.
They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;
29 Pilate donc vint à eux dehors et dit: Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme?
Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, 'What accusation do ye bring against this man?'
30 Ils répondirent et lui dirent: Si ce n’était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne vous l’aurions pas livré.
they answered and said to him, 'If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.'
31 Alors Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et le jugez selon votre loi. Mais les Juifs lui répondirent: Il ne nous est pas permis de mettre personne à mort.
Pilate, therefore, said to them, 'Take ye him — ye — and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, 'It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;'
32 Afin que fût accomplie la parole que Jésus avait dite, montrant de quelle mort il devait mourir.
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
33 Pilate rentra donc dans le prétoire, appela Jésus, et lui dit: Es-tu le roi des Juifs?
Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, 'Thou art the King of the Jews?'
34 Jésus répondit: Dis-tu cela de toi-même, ou d’autres te l’ont-ils dit de moi?
Jesus answered him, 'From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?'
35 Pilate reprit: Est-ce que je suis Juif, moi? Ta nation et les pontifes t’ont livré à moi; qu’as-tu fait?
Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?'
36 Jésus répondit: Mon royaume n’est pas de ce monde; si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes serviteurs combattraient certainement pour que je ne fusse point livré aux Juifs; mais je l’assure, mon royaume n’est pas d’ici.
Jesus answered, 'My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.'
37 C’est pourquoi Pilate lui repartit: Tu es donc roi? Jésus répondit: Tu le dis, je suis roi. Si je suis né et si je suis venu dans le monde, c’est pour rendre témoignage à la vérité; quiconque est de la vérité, écoute ma voix.
Pilate, therefore, said to him, 'Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, 'Thou dost say [it]; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'
38 Pilate lui demanda: Qu’est-ce que la vérité? Et ayant dit cela, il alla de nouveau vers les Juifs, et leur dit: Je ne trouve en lui aucune cause de mort.
Pilate saith to him, 'What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, 'I do find no fault in him;
39 Mais c’est la coutume parmi vous que je vous délivre un criminel à la Pâque; voulez-vous donc que je vous délivre le roi des Juifs?
and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'
40 Alors ils crièrent tous de nouveau, disant: Non pas celui-ci, mais Barabbas. Or Barabbas était un voleur.
therefore they all cried out again, saying, 'Not this one — but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.
