Job 38
1 Or, répondant à Job du milieu d’un tourbillon, le Seigneur dit:
Then did the Lord address Job out of the storm-wind, and said,
2 Quel est celui qui mêle des sentences à des discours maladroits?
Who is this that casteth darkness [on my] counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Ceins tes reins comme un homme de cœur; je t’interrogerai, et réponds-moi.
Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
4 Où étais-tu, quand je posais les fondements de la terre? Dis-le-moi, si tu as de l’intelligence.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding [of it].
5 Qui a établi ses mesures, le sais-tu? ou qui a tendu sur elle le cordeau?
Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuring-line over her?
6 Sur quoi ses bases ont-elles été affermies? ou qui a posé sa pierre angulaire,
Upon what are her foundation-pillars placed at rest? or who laid her corner-stone:
7 Lorsque les astres du matin me louaient tous ensemble, et que tous les fils de Dieu étaient transportés de joie?
When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
8 Qui a renfermé la mer dans des digues, quand elle s’élançait comme sortant d’un sein,
And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
9 Lorsque je lui mettais un nuage pour vêtement, et que je l’enveloppais d’obscurité comme des langes de l’enfance?
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddling-cloth,
10 Je l’ai environnée de mes limites, j’y ai mis un verrou et une porte à deux battants;
And when I decreed for it my law, and set [for it] bars and doors,
11 Et j’ai dit: Tu viendras jusque-là, et tu n’iras pas plus loin; et ici tu briseras tes flots orgueilleux.
And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed [thy strength] in the pride of thy waves?
12 Est-ce que depuis ta naissance tu as commandé à l’étoile du matin, et tu as montré à l’aurore son lieu?
Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morning-dawn its place:
13 Et as-tu tenu, en les ébranlant, les extrémités de la terre, et en as-tu chassé les impies?
That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
14 Elle sera rétablie comme une terre molle de cachet, et elle demeurera comme un vêtement.
She is changed as the sealing-clay: and [all things] stand as though newly clad.
15 La lumière des impies leur sera ôté, et leur bras élevé sera brisé.
And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Est-ce que tu es entré dans les profondeurs de la mer, et as-tu marché dans les extrémités de l’abîme?
Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
17 Est-ce que les portes de la mort ont été ouvertes pour toi? et les portes ténébreuses, les as-tu vues?
Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Est-ce que tu as considéré l’étendue de la terre? Enseigne-moi, si tu les connais, toutes ces choses;
Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
19 En quelle voie la lumière habite, et quel est le lieu des ténèbres;
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light dwelleth? and the darkness—where is its place,
20 En sorte que tu conduises chacune d’elles à son terme, et que tu connaisses les sentiers de leur demeure.
That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
21 Car savais-tu alors que tu devais naître? et le nombre de tes jours, l’avais-tu connu?
Thou [surely] knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 Est-ce que tu es entré dans les trésors de la neige, ou as-tu aperçu les trésors de la grêle,
Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
23 Que j’ai préparées pour le temps de l’ennemi, pour le jour de la guerre et du combat?
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
24 Sais-tu par quelle voie se répand la lumière, et se distribue la chaleur sur la terre?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light divideth itself, [where] the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Qui a donné cours à l’ondée la plus impétueuse, et une voie au tonnerre éclatant,
Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning [that is followed by] thunders,
26 Pour faire pleuvoir sur une terre sans homme dans un désert, où aucun des mortels ne demeure,
To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth [is found];
27 Pour inonder une terre inaccessible et désolée, et y produire des herbes vertes?
To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
28 Qui est le père de la pluie? ou qui a engendré les gouttes de la rosée?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 Du sein de qui est sortie la glace? et la gelée du ciel, qui l’a engendrée?
Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven—who giveth birth to it?
30 À la manière de la pierre les eaux se durcissent, et la surface de l’abîme devient solide.
[When] like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
31 Est-ce que tu seras capable de joindre ensemble les brillantes étoiles des Pléiades, ou pourrastu interrompre le cours d’Arcturus?
Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
32 Est-ce que tu produis Lucifer en son temps, et que tu fais lever l’étoile du soir sur les fils de la terre?
Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
33 Est-ce que tu connais l’ordre du ciel, et en rendras-tu raison sur la terre?
Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
34 Est-ce que tu élèveras ta voix dans les nuages, et que l’impétuosité des eaux te couvrira?
Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Est-ce que tu enverras les foudres, et elles iront; et, revenant, te diront-elles: Nous voici?
Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
36 Qui a mis au dedans de l’homme la sagesse? ou qui a donné au coq l’intelligence?
Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
37 Qui expliquera la conduite des cieux, et qui fera cesser le concert du ciel?
Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
38 Quand la poussière se répandait-elle sur la terre, et les glèbes se durcissaient-elles?
When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
39 Est-ce que tu prendras la proie pour la lionne, et empliras-tu l’âme de ses petits,
Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
40 Quand ils sont couchés dans leurs antres, et qu’ils épient dans leurs cavernes?
When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
41 Qui prépare au corbeau sa nourriture, quand ses petits crient à Dieu, errant ça et là, parce qu’ils n’ont rien à manger?
Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
