Job 36

1 Continuant de nouveau, Eliu dit ceci:

Then continued Elihu, and said,

2 Ecoute-moi un peu, et je te convaincrai; car j’ai encore à parler en faveur de Dieu.

Wait for me a little, and I will instruct thee; for [I have] still some words on God's behalf.

3 Je reprendrai mes preuves dès le commencement, et je te montrerai que mon créateur est juste.

I will lift up my knowledge for him who is afar, and for my Maker will I obtain righteousness.

4 Vraiment, en effet, mes discours sont exempts de mensonge, et ma parfaite science le sera prouvée.

For truly no falsehood is [in] my words: one that is upright in [his] opinions [dealeth now] with thee.

5 Dieu ne rejette point les puissants, puisqu’il est lui-même puissant.

Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength of intellect.

6 Mais il ne sauve point les impies, et il fait justice aux pauvres.

He permitteth not the wicked to live; but he procureth justice for the afflicted.

7 Il ne détournera pas ses yeux du juste; et il place des rois sur le trône pour toujours, et ces rois sont ainsi élevés.

He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous; but [he placeth them] with kings on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

8 Et s’ils sont dans les chaînes, et s’ils se trouvent resserrés par les liens de la pauvreté,

And if they be bound in fetters, and if they be entangled in the cords of affliction:

9 Il leur montrera leurs œuvres et leurs crimes, parce qu’ils ont été violents.

Then doth he tell them of their work, and of their transgressions, when they had become strong.

10 Il découvrira leur oreille pour les reprendre; et il parlera, afin qu’ils reviennent de l’iniquité.

And he openeth thus their ear to correction, and saith that they should return from wrong-doing.

11 S’ils écoutent et obéissent, ils accompliront leurs jours dans le bonheur et leurs années dans la gloire.

If they hearken and serve [him], they will spend their days in happiness, and their years in pleasures.

12 Mais s’ils n’écoutent point, ils passeront par le glaive, et ils périront dans leur folie.

But if they hearken not, they will pass away through the sword, and they will perish in want of knowledge.

13 Les dissimulés et les astucieux provoquent la colère de Dieu, et ils ne crieront point, lorsqu’ils seront enchaînés.

But the hypocrites in heart persevere in wrath; they will not offer entreaty when he bindeth them:

14 Leur âme mourra dans la tempête, et leur vie parmi les efféminés.

Their soul will die in youth, and their life, among the incestuous.

15 Dieu tirera le pauvre de son angoisse, et il découvrira son oreille dans la tribulation.

He delivereth the afflicted through his affliction, and openeth through oppression his ear.

16 Il te sauvera donc d’un abîme étroit et qui n’a pas de fondement sous lui, et te mettra très au large; et la table où tu prends du repos sera pleine de viandes grasses.

And also thee hath he incited away from the jaws of distress into a wide space, on the site of which there is no straitness; and what is set on thy table is full of fatness.

17 Ta cause a été jugée comme celle d’un impie; tu recevras selon la cause et le jugement.

But if thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: [divine] judgment and decree will support each other.

18 Que la colère donc ne te surmonte point en sorte que tu opprimes quelqu’un; et que la multitude des dons ne t’incline point vers l’injustice.

For there would be fury, If aught were to incite thee to utter an abundance [of rebellious words]; and the greatness of the infliction must not mislead thee.

19 Abaisse ta grandeur sans que la tribulation t’ y oblige; abaisse aussi les forts et les puissants.

Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold ore, nor all the highest forces of strength.

20 N’allonge point la nuit, afin que les peuples, au lieu d’eux, puissent monter jusqu à toi.

Desire then not eagerly the night, when nations pass away in their place.

21 Prends garde de ne point te porter à l’iniquité; car tu as commencé à la suivre, après la misère qui t’a atteint.

Take heed, turn not thyself to wrong-doing, so that thou wouldst choose this because of [thy] affliction.

22 Vois donc! Dieu est élevé dans sa puissance, et nul ne lui est semblable parmi les législateurs.

Behold, God is exalted by his power: who is an instructer like him?

23 Qui pourra scruter ses voies? ou qui peut lui dire: Vous avez commis une iniquité?

Who hath given him a charge concerning his way? or who hath ever said, Thou hast acted unjustly?

24 Souviens-toi que tu ignores son œuvre, que les hommes ont chantée.

Reflect, that thou shouldst magnify his work, which [other] men have beheld.

25 Tous les hommes le voient, chacun le considère de loin.

All men have looked at it [with astonishment]; the mortal gazeth at it from afar.

26 Vois donc! Dieu est grand, il surpasse notre science, et le nombre de ses années est incalculable.

Behold, God is great, and we comprehend him not, the number of his years can truly not be searched out.

27 C’est lui qui enlève les gouttes de la pluie, et répand les ondées comme des torrents

For he taketh away drops of water, which are purified into rain in his mist:

28 Qui fondent des nues, lesquelles voilent toutes les régions d’en haut.

These drop down out of the skies; they distil upon the multitude of men.

29 S’il veut étendre les nuées comme sa tente,

But [what man] can understand the outspreadings of the clouds? the tumult of his tabernacle?

30 Et lancer d’en haut des éclairs par sa lumière, il couvrira les extrémités même de la mer.

Behold, he spreadeth out over it his light, and covereth up the roots of the sea.

31 Car c’est par ces moyens qu’il juge les peuples, et qu’il donne la nourriture à un grand nombre de mortels.

For by means of them he judgeth nations, he giveth food in superfluity.

32 Dans ses mains il cache la lumière, et il lui ordonne de paraître de nouveau.

[His] hands he covereth with light; and he commandeth it to strike the one who striveth against him.

33 Il annonce à celui qu’il aime, qu’elle est son partage, et qu’il peut monter jusqu’à elle,

The noise of his storm telleth of it, yea, the cattle also, of the rising tempest.
