Job 28
1 L’argent a des sources de ses veines, et il y a pour l’or un lieu où il est mis en fusion.
For truly there is a source for the silver, and a place for the gold which men refine.
2 Le fer est tiré de la terre, et une pierre dissoute par la chaleur est changée en airain.
Iron is taken out of the dust, and the stone is melted into copper.
3 Il a posé un temps déterminé aux ténèbres, et il considère lui-même la fin de toutes choses, aussi bien qu’une pierre cachée dans l’obscurité, et que l’ombre de la mort.
An end doth he set to darkness, and the very utmost limit doth he search out, the stones of darkness, and of the shadow of death.
4 Un torrent sépare d’un peuple étranger ceux que le pied de l’homme indigent a oubliés, et qui sont inaccessibles.
He breaketh a channel far from the inhabited place; those of unsteady foot, the poorest of men move [there about].
5 Une terre d’où naissait du pain, a été bouleversée en son lieu par le feu.
The earth, out of which cometh forth bread, is under its surface turned up as it were with fire.
6 Ses pierres sont le lieu du saphir, et ses glèbes sont de l’or.
Her stones are the place whence the sapphire cometh; and golden dust is also there;
7 L’oiseau en a ignoré le sentier, et l’œil d’un vautour ne l’a pas regardé.
[On the] path which no bird of prey knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not surveyed;
8 Les fils des marchands ne l’ont pas foulé, et la lionne ne l’a pas traversé.
[Which] ravenous beasts have never trodden, over which the lion hath never passed.
9 Il a étendu sa main contre des rochers, il a renversé des montagnes jusqu’à leurs racines.
To the flinty rock he stretcheth forth his hand; he overturneth the mountains from the root.
10 Il a creusé des ruisseaux dans les pierres, et son œil a vu tout ce qu’il y a de précieux.
Amid rocks he heweth out canals: and every precious thing doth his eye behold.
11 Il a scruté aussi les profondeurs des fleuves, et il a produit à la lumière des choses cachées.
The various droppings of water he uniteth into streams, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.
12 Mais la sagesse, où se trouve-t-elle? Et quel est le lieu de l’intelligence?
But wisdom—where shall she he found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 L’homme n’en connaît pas le prix, et elle ne se trouve pas dans la terre de ceux qui vivent dans les délices.
Man knoweth not her value: and she is not to be found in the land of the living.
14 L’abîme dit: Elle n’est pas en moi; la mer dit aussi; Elle n’est pas avec moi.
The deep saith, Not in me is she: and the sea saith, She is not with me.
15 On ne la donnera pas pour l’or le plus affiné, et on ne l’échangera pas contre de l’argent au poids.
No fine gold can be given in lieu of her, and silver cannot be weighed out as her price.
16 On ne la comparera point aux tissus colorés de l’Inde, ni à la sardoine la plus précieuse ou au saphir.
She cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 On ne lui égalera point l’or ou le verre, et on ne l’échangera point contre des vases d’or.
She cannot be estimated after gold and glass; and not in exchange for her [can] vessels of refined gold [be taken.]
18 Ce qu’il y a de plus grand et de plus élevé ne sera pas même nommé auprès d’elle, mais la sagesse a une origine secrète.
Coral and crystal will not be thought of; and the value of wisdom is above pearls.
19 On ne lui égalera pas la topaze de l’Ethiopie, et on ne la comparera pas aux teintures les plus éclatantes.
She cannot be estimated after the topaz of Ethiopia, nor can she be valued with pure gold.
20 D’où vient donc la sagesse, et quel est le lieu de l’intelligence?
But wisdom—whence cometh she? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Elle est cachée aux yeux de tous les vivants, elle est inconnue aux oiseaux mêmes du ciel.
Yea, she is hidden from the eyes of all living, and from the fowls of the heavens is she concealed.
22 La perdition et la mort ont dit: Nous avons ouï son nom de nos oreilles.
Perdition and death say, With our ears have we heard a report of her.
23 C’est Dieu qui comprend sa voie, et c’est lui qui connaît son lieu.
God [alone] understandeth her way, and he knoweth her place;
24 Car c’est lui qui observe les extrémités du monde, et qui considère tout ce qui est sous le ciel.
For he looketh to the ends of the earth, [whatever is] under the whole heaven doth he see.
25 C’est lui qui a fait un poids aux vents, et qui a pesé les eaux avec une mesure.
When he imparted weight unto the wind; and [when] the waters he established by measure;
26 Quand il imposait aux pluies une loi, et une voix aux tempêtes tonnantes,
When he made a law for the rain, and a way for the lightning of [his] thunders;
27 C’est alors qu’il l’a vue, qu’il l’a proclamée, et qu’il l’a scrutée.
Then did he see her, and make her known; he established her, and also searched her out.
28 Et il a dit à l’homme: Voici; la crainte du Seigneur, c’est la sagesse, et s’éloigner du mal, l’intelligence.
And he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to eschew evil is understanding.
