Job 21
1 Mais, répondant. Job dit:
Then answered Job, and said,
2 Ecoutez, je vous prie, mes paroles, et faites pénitence.
Hear, O hear my speech, and let this be wherewith you give consolations.
3 Supportez-moi, et moi je parlerai; et après, si bon vous semble, riez de mes paroles.
Bear with me that I may indeed speak: and after my speaking, then canst thou mock.
4 Est-ce contre un homme qu’est ma dispute, pour que je ne doive pas être justement contristé?
As for me, —is against man my complaint? and if this be so, why should my spirit not be impatient?
5 Regardez-moi, et soyez dans l’étonnement, et mettez un doigt sur votre bouche:
Turn yourselves unto me, and be astounded, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
6 Et moi, quand je recueille mes souvenirs, je suis épouvanté, et le tremblement agite ma chair.
Yea, when I think of it, I am terrified, and shuddering seizeth hold of my flesh.
7 Pourquoi donc les impies vivent-ils, sont-ils élevés et affermis dans les richesses?
Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, grow strong in power?
8 Leur race se perpétue devant eux, une troupe de leurs proches et de leurs petits enfants est en leur présence.
Their seed is firmly established in their presence with them. their offspring are before their eyes.
9 Leurs maisons sont sûres et paisibles, et la verge de Dieu n’est pas sur eux.
Their houses are at peace without any dread, and no rod of God [cometh] over them.
10 Leur génisse a conçu et n’a pas avorté; leur vache a mis bas, et elle n’a pas été privée de son fruit.
The bull of each one gendereth, and disappointeth not: the cow of each one calveth, and casteth not her young.
11 Leurs petits enfants, sortent comme les troupeaux, et leurs enfants sautent de joie au milieu de leurs jeux.
They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children skip about [with joy].
12 Ils tiennent en main un tambour et une harpe, et ils se réjouissent au son d’un orgue.
They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
13 Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur, et en un moment ils descendent dans les enfers. (Sheol h7585)
They wear out their days in happiness, and in a moment they go down to the nether world. (Sheol h7585)
14 Ils ont dit à Dieu: Retire-toi de nous; nous ne voulons pas connaître tes voies.
And yet they say unto God, “Depart from us; and the knowledge of thy ways we desire not.
15 Qui est le Tout-Puissant, pour que nous le servions? et que nous revient-il, si nous le prions?
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit shall we have, if we entreat him urgently?”
16 Mais cependant, puisque leurs biens ne sont pas en leur main, que le conseil des impies soit loin de moi.
Lo, not in their hand doth their happiness rest! The counsel of the wicked be [still] far from me.
17 Combien de fois la lampe des impies s’éteindra, un déluge de maux leur surviendra, et Dieu leur distribuera les douleurs de sa fureur?
How often is the lamp of the wicked quenched? and how often cometh over them their calamity? and doth [God] distribute their lot in his anger?
18 Ils seront comme des pailles à la face du vent, et comme de la cendre brûlante qu’un tourbillon disperse.
Are they as straw before the wind, and as chaff which the stealeth away?
19 Dieu gardera à ses fils la douleur du père; et lorsqu’il lui aura rendu selon son mérite, alors il comprendra.
Should God lay up for his children his wrong-doing? it were better that he reward him, that he might know it himself.
20 Ses yeux verront sa ruine, et il boira de la fureur du Tout-Puissant.
His own eyes ought to see his downfall, and from the wrath of the Almighty ought he to drink.
21 Car que lui importe sa maison après lui, lors même que le nombre de ses mois serait diminué de moitié?
For what care hath he for his household after him, when the number of his months is all apportioned to him?
22 Est-ce que quelqu’un enseignera la science à Dieu, qui juge ceux qui sont élevés?
Is this fitting God, who teacheth knowledge? him who judgeth those that are highest?
23 Celui-ci meurt robuste et sain, riche et heureux.
That this one dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;
24 Ses entrailles sont pleines de graisse, et ses os sont arrosés de moelle.
His vessels being full of healthy fluid, and the marrow of his bones being well moistened:
25 Mais un autre meurt dans l’amertume de l’âme, sans aucune richesse.
While this other dieth with an embittered soul, and hath never partaken of any happiness;
26 Et cependant ils dormiront ensemble dans la poussière, et des vers les couvriront.
[And yet] together they must lie down in the dust, and the worms will cover them?
27 Certes, je connais vos pensées et vos jugements iniques contre moi.
Behold, I know your thoughts, and the opinions which ye wrongfully devise against me.
28 Car vous dites: Où est la maison d’un prince? et où sont les tabernacles des impies?
For ye say, Where is the house of the noble-minded? and where is the tent of the dwelling-places of the wicked?
29 Interrogez le premier venu des passants, et vous reconnaîtrez qu’il comprend ces mêmes choses; à savoir:
Have ye not asked the wayfarers? surely their token ye cannot disregard,
30 Que le méchant est réservé pour le jour de perdition, et qu’il sera conduit jusqu’au jour de la fureur.
That the bad man is reserved for the day of calamity, [that the wicked] are carried forward to the day of wrath.
31 Qui le reprendra en face de sa voie? et qui lui rendra ce qu’il a fait?
[But] who will tell him to his face of his way? and who will repay him what he hath done?
32 Il sera conduit aux sépulcres, et il veillera au milieu du monceau des morts.
Yea he will indeed be carried to the grave, and men will quickly think of his monument:
33 Il a été agréable au gravier du Cocyte, et il entraînera tout homme après lui, et il y a devant lui une multitude innombrable.
Sweet are to him the clods of the valley; and after him succeedeth every man, as those that were before him are without number.
34 Comment donc me donnezvous une vaine consolation, puisqu’il a été démontré que votre réponse répugne à la vérité.
How then will ye comfort me with vanity? and of your answers there remaineth only deception.
