Job 1
1 Il y avait un homme dans la terre de Hus du nom de Job; et cet homme était simple, droit, craignant Dieu et s’éloignant du mal.
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and this man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and abstained from evil.
2 Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles.
And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3 Et sa possession fut sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, et aussi cinq cent paires de bœufs, cinq cents ânesses et un très grand nombre de domestiques; et cet homme était grand parmi les Orientaux.
And his substance was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; and this man was greater than all the children of the east.
4 Et ses fils allaient et faisaient un festin dans leurs maisons, chacun à son jour. De plus ils envoyaient appeler leurs trois sœurs, pour qu’elles mangeassent et bussent avec eux,
And his sons went and made a feast in the house of each one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 Et lorsque les jours du festin étaient successivement passés, Job envoyait chez ses enfants, et il les sanctifiait; puis, se levant au point du jour, il offrait des holocaustes pour chacun d’eux; car il disait: Peut-être que mes enfants ont péché et maudit Dieu en leur cœur. Ainsi faisait Job tous les jours.
And it was so, when the days of the feasting were gone about, that Job sent and hallowed them; and he rose up early in the morning, and offered up burnt-offerings [according to] the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6 Or un certain jour, comme les fils de Dieu étaient venus pour assister devant le Seigneur, Satan aussi se trouva au milieu d’eux.
And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah; and Satan came also among them.
7 Le Seigneur lui demanda: D’où viens-tu? Satan, répondant, dit: J’ai fait le tour de la terre, et je l’ai traversée.
And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 Le Seigneur lui demanda encore: Est-ce que tu n’as point considéré mon serviteur Job? Il n’y en a pas de semblable à lui sur la terre; homme simple, droit, craignant Dieu, et s’éloignant du mal.
And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil?
9 Satan, répondant, dit: Est-ce en vain que Job craint le Seigneur?
And Satan answered Jehovah and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 N’avez-vous pas mis un rempart autour de lui, de sa maison et de tous ses biens? N’avez-vous pas béni les œuvres de ses mains, et ses possessions ne se sont-elles pas augmentées sur la terre?
Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is spread abroad in the land.
11 Mais étendez un peu votre main, et touchez tout ce qu’il possède, et vous verrez s’il ne vous maudira pas en face.
But put forth thy hand now and touch all that he hath, [and see] if he will not curse thee to thy face!
12 Le Seigneur répondit donc à Satan: Voilà que tout ce qu’il a est en ta main; seulement n’étends pas sur lui ta main. Et Satan sortit de la présence du Seigneur.
And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
13 Or, comme un certain jour, les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère, le premier-né,
And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn.
14 Un messager vint vers Job, pour dire: Les bœufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient auprès d’eux,
And there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them;
15 Et les Sabéens ont fait une incursion, et ont tout enlevé: et ils ont frappé du glaive les serviteurs; et je me suis échappé, moi seul, pour vous l’annoncer.
and [they of] Sheba fell [upon them] and took them, and the servants have they smitten with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.
16 Et comme celui-là parlait encore, il en vint un autre, et il dit: Un feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, et ayant atteint les brebis et les serviteurs, il les a consumés; et je me suis échappé, moi seul pour vous l’annoncer.
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.
17 Mais celui-là parlant encore, il en vint un troisième, et il dit: Les Chaldéens ont fait trois bandes, puis ils se sont jetés sur les chameaux et les ont enlevés; ils ont aussi frappé les serviteurs du glaive; et j’ai fui, moi seul, pour vous l’annoncer.
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels and took them, and the servants have they smitten with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.
18 Celui-là parlait encore, et voilà qu’un autre entra et dit: Vos fils et vos filles mangeant et buvant du vin dans la maison de leur frère, le premier-né,
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn;
19 Soudain un vent violent s’est élevé du côté du désert, et il a ébranlé les quatre angles de la maison, qui, s’écroulant, a accablé vos enfants, et ils sont morts; et j’ai fui, moi seul, pour vous l’annoncer.
and behold, there came a great wind from over the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee.
20 Alors Job se leva, déchira ses vêtements, et ayant rasé sa tête, il se jeta par terre, adora
And Job rose up, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshipped;
21 Et dit: Nu je suis sorti du sein de ma mère, et nu j’y retournerai; Dieu m’a donné. Dieu m’a ôté: comme il a plu au Seigneur, ainsi il a été fait; que le nom du Seigneur soit béni!
and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah!
22 En toutes ces choses, Job ne pécha point par ses lèvres, et il ne dit rien d’insensé contre Dieu.
In all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed anything unseemly to God.
