Jérémie 51
1 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je susciterai sur Babylone et sur ses habitants, qui ont élevé leur cœur contre moi, comme un vent pestilentiel.
Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will raise up, over Babylon and over its inhabitants, who have lifted up their heart against me, something like a pestilent wind.
2 Et j’enverrai contre Babylone des gens le van à la main; et ils la vanneront, et ils ruineront sa terre. De tous côtés ils sont venus sur elle au jour de son affliction.
And I will send winnowers into Babylon, and they will winnow her, and they will demolish her land. For they will overwhelm her from every side in the day of her affliction.
3 Que celui qui tend son arc ne le tende pas, et que nul ne monte cuirassé; n’épargnez point ses jeunes hommes; tuez toute sa milice.
Let him who draws the bow, not draw his bow. And let him who wears armor, not rise up. Do not spare her young men. Destroy her entire military.
4 Et les tués tomberont dans la terre des Chaldéens, et les blessés dans ses provinces.
And the slain will fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and the wounded in its regions.
5 Parce qu’Israël et Juda ne sont pas veufs de leur Dieu, le Seigneur des armées; mais leur terre a été remplie de crimes contre le saint d’Israël.
Yet Israel and Judah have not been widowed by their God, the Lord of hosts, though their land has been filled with transgression against the Holy One of Israel.
6 Fuyez du milieu de Babylone, et que chacun sauve son âme; ne vous taisez point sur son iniquité; car c’est le temps de la vengeance du Seigneur; lui-même la rétribuera.
Flee from the midst of Babylon! And let each one save his own life. Do not be silent about her iniquity. For it is the time of revenge from the Lord. He himself will repay her, in her turn.
7 Babylone a été une coupe d’or dans la main du Seigneur; elle a enivré toute la terre; les nations ont bu de son vin, c’est pour cela qu’elles ont chancelé.
Babylon is a gold cup in the hand of the Lord, inebriating the entire earth. The nations have drunk from her wine, and therefore they have staggered.
8 Babylone est tombée subitement, et elle a été brisée; poussez des hurlements sur elle; prenez de la résine pour sa douleur, afin de voir si elle guérira.
Suddenly, Babylon has fallen and been crushed. Wail over her! Take a balm to her pain, if perhaps she may be healed.”
9 Nous avons soigné Babylone, et elle n’a pas été guérie; abandonnons-la et allons chacun en notre terre, parce que jusqu’aux cieux est parvenu son jugement, et qu’il s’est élevé jusqu’aux nues.
“We would have cured Babylon, but there is no cure. Let us abandon her, and let each one of us go to his own land. For her judgment has reached even to the heavens, and has been lifted up even to the clouds.
10 Le Seigneur a fait ressortir notre justice; venez, et racontons dans Sion l’ouvrage du Seigneur, notre Dieu.
The Lord has brought forth our justices. Come and let us describe in Zion the work of the Lord our God.”
11 Aiguisez les flèches, remplissez les carquois; le Seigneur a suscité l’esprit des rois des Mèdes, et sa pensée est contre Babylone afin de la perdre; parce que c’est la vengeance du Seigneur, la vengeance de son temple.
Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers. The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes. And his mind is against Babylon, so that he may destroy her. For this is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.
12 Sur les murs de Babylone levez l’étendard, augmentez la garde, posez des sentinelles, préparez les embuscades, parce que le Seigneur a résolu et il a accompli tout ce qu’il a dit contre les habitants de Babylone.
Upon the walls of Babylon, lift up a sign. Increase the watch! Rouse the watchmen! Prepare ambushes! For the Lord has planned and has accomplished all that he has spoken, against the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 Toi qui habites sur de grandes eaux, riche en trésors, ta fin est venue, c’est le fondement de ta destruction.
You who live above many waters, rich in treasures: your end has arrived, your measure has been cut short.
14 Le Seigneur des armées a juré par son âme, disant: Je te remplirai d’hommes comme de bruchus, et on entonnera sur toi un chant de joie.
The Lord of hosts has sworn by himself, saying: “For I will fill you with men as with locusts, and they will sing a rhythmic chant against you.”
15 C’est lui qui a fait la terre par sa puissance, préparé l’univers par sa sagesse, et par sa prudence étendu les cieux.
The One who made the earth by his strength, who prepared the world by his wisdom, and who stretched out the heavens by his prudence:
16 Lorsqu’il fait entendre sa voix, les eaux s’amassent dans le ciel; c’est lui qui fait monter les nuées des extrémités de la terre; il a converti les éclairs en pluie, et il a tiré les vents de ses trésors.
when he utters his voice, the waters will be multiplied in the heavens. The One who lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth: he has turned lightning into rain, and he has brought forth wind from his storehouses.
17 Tout homme est devenu insensé par sa propre science; tout fondeur a été confondu par son image taillée au ciseau, parce que c’est une chose mensongère qu’il a fondue, et que la vie n’y est pas.
Each man has become foolish before his own knowledge. Each sculptor has been confounded by his own sculpture. For what he has formed of them is a lie, and there is no spirit in them.
18 Vaines sont leurs œuvres et dignes de risée; au temps de leur visite elles périront.
They are empty works, deserving of ridicule. In the time of their visitation, they will perish.
19 Il n’en est pas ainsi de la part de Jacob, parce que celui qui a fait toutes ces choses est lui-même son partage; et Israël est le sceptre de son héritage; le Seigneur des armées est son nom.
The portion of Jacob is not like their portion. For the One who made all things is his portion, and Israel is the scepter of his inheritance. The Lord of hosts is his name:
20 Tu brises pour moi des instruments de guerre, et je briserai par toi des nations, et je perdrai entièrement par toi des royaumes;
“For me, you strike together the instruments of war; and with you, I will strike together nations; and with you, I will scatter the kingdoms.
21 Et je briserai par toi le cheval et celui qui le monte; et je briserai par toi le char et celui qui le monte;
And with you, I will strike together the horse and his rider; and with you, I will strike together the chariot and its rider.
22 Et je briserai par toi l’homme et la femme; et je briserai par toi le vieillard et l’enfant; et je briserai par toi le jeune homme et la vierge;
And with you, I will strike together man and woman; and with you, I will strike together the old man and the boy; and with you, I will strike together the young man and the virgin.
23 Et je briserai par toi le pasteur et son troupeau; et je briserai par toi le laboureur et ses bœufs attachés au joug; et je briserai par toi les chefs et les magistrats.
And with you, I will strike together the pastor and his flock; and with you, I will strike together the farmer and his yoke of oxen; and with you, I will strike together military leaders and civil leaders.
24 Et je rendrai à Babylone et à tous les habitants de la Chaldée tout leur mal, qu’ils ont fait dans Sion, à vos yeux, dit le Seigneur.
And I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all their evil that they have done in Zion, before your eyes, says the Lord.
25 Et voilà que je viens à toi, montagne pernicieuse, dit le Seigneur, qui corromps toute la terre; et j’étendrai ma main sur toi, et je t’arracherai d’entre les rochers, et je ferai de toi une montagne en combustion.
Behold, I am against you, you pestilent mountain, says the Lord, for you are corrupting the entire earth. And I will extend my hand over you, and I will roll you down from the rocks, and I will make you into a burning mountain.
26 Et on ne tirera pas de toi une pierre pour un angle, ni une pierre pour des fondements; mais tu seras éternellement détruite, dit le Seigneur.
And they will not take from you a stone for the corner, nor a stone for the foundations. Instead, you will be destroyed unto eternity,” says the Lord.
27 Levez l’étendard sur la terre; sonnez la trompette parmi des nations; consacrez contre elle des nations; annoncez aux rois d’Ararat, de Menni et d’Ascenez de marcher contre elle; dénombrez contre elle les soldats du Taphsar; amenez contre elle le cheval, comme le bruchus armé d’un aiguillon.
Lift up a sign in the land! Sound the trumpet among the nations! Sanctify the nations against her. Announce against her the kings of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Number against her Taphsar. Lead in the horse, like the stinging locust.
28 Consacrez contre elle des nations, les rois de Médie, ses chefs et tous ses magistrats, et toute la terre soumise à sa puissance.
Sanctify the nations against her: the kings of Media, their military leaders, and all their civil leaders, and the entire land under their authority.
29 Et la terre sera agitée et troublée; parce que contre Babylone s’éveillera la pensée du Seigneur, afin de rendre la terre de Babylone déserte et inhabitable.
And the earth will be shaken and will be disturbed. For the plan of the Lord against Babylon will awaken, so that he may make the land of Babylon desolate and uninhabitable.
30 Les forts de Babylone ont cessé le combat; ils sont demeurés dans les citadelles: leur force a été dévorée, et ils sont devenus comme des femmes; leurs tabernacles ont été brûlés, leurs verrous ont été brisés.
The strong ones of Babylon have ceased to do battle. They have lived in fortresses. Their health has been devoured, and they have become like women. Her tabernacles have been set ablaze; her bars have been broken.
31 Un coureur viendra au-devant d’un coureur, et un messager à la rencontre d’un messager, afin d’annoncer au roi de Babylone que sa ville a été prise d’un bout à l’autre;
Runner will go forth to meet runner, and messenger will meet messenger, so as to tell the king of Babylon that his city has been captured, from one end to the other,
32 Et que les gués sont occupés, et que le feu a été mis aux marais, et que les hommes de guerre ont été bouleversés.
and that the fords were seized in advance, and that the marshes have been burned with fire, and that the men of war have been set in disarray.
33 Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: La fille de Babylone est comme une aire: c’est le temps de son battage; encore un peu et viendra le temps de sa moisson.
For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor. This is the time of her threshing. A little while longer, and the time of her harvest will arrive.”
34 Il m’a mangée; il m’a dévorée, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, il m’a rendue comme un vase vide, il m’a engloutie comme un dragon, il a rempli son ventre de ce que j’avais de plus délicieux, et il m’a rejetée.
“Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has consumed me, has devoured me. He has made me like an empty vessel. He has swallowed me like a dragon. He has filled his belly with my tender ones, and he has cast me out.
35 L’iniquité commise contre moi et ma chair est retombée sur Babylone, dit l’habitation de Sion, et mon sang sur les habitants de la Chaldée, dit Jérusalem.
This iniquity is against me, and so my flesh is upon Babylon,” says the habitation of Zion. “And my blood is upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,” says Jerusalem.
36 À cause de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je jugerai ta cause, et j’exercerai ta vengeance: je sécherai sa mer, et je tarirai sa source.
Because of this, thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will judge your case, and I will avenge your vengeance, and I will make her sea into a desert, and I will dry up her spring.
37 Et Babylone sera un monceau de pierres, une demeure de dragons, un objet de stupeur et de sifflement, parce qu’il n’y a point d’habitant.
And Babylon will become a tumult, the habitation of dragons, an astonishment, and a hissing, because there is no inhabitant.
38 Tous ensemble ils rugiront comme des lions, ils secoueront leur crinière comme de petits bons.
They will roar together, like lions, they will shake their manes, like young lions.
39 Dans leur chaleur je leur donnerai leurs boissons, et je les enivrerai, afin qu’ils s’assoupissent, et qu’ils dorment un sommeil éternel, et qu’ils ne se relèvent point, dit le Seigneur.
In their heat, I will give them a drink, and I will inebriate them, so that they become drowsy, and sleep an everlasting sleep, and do not rise up, says the Lord.
40 Je les conduirai comme des agneaux pour servir de victimes, comme des béliers avec des chevreaux.
I will lead them away, like lambs to the slaughter, and like rams with young goats.
41 Comment a été prise Sésach? et comment a été emportée la ville illustre dans toute la terre? comment Babylone est-elle devenue un objet de stupeur parmi les nations?
How was Sesac captured, and how was the renowned one of all the earth seized? How has Babylon become an astonishment among the nations?
42 La mer est montée sur Babylone; par la multitude de ses efforts elle a été couverte.
The sea has ascended over Babylon; she has been covered by the multitude of its waves.
43 Ses cités sont devenues un objet de stupeur, une terre inhabitable et déserte, une terre dans laquelle nul n’habite, et où ne passe pas le fils d’un homme.
Her cities have become an astonishment, an uninhabited and desolate land, a land in which no one may live, nor may a son of man pass through it.
44 Et je visiterai Bel à Babylone, et je ferai sortir de sa bouche ce qu’il avait absorbé; et les nations n’afflueront plus vers lui, puisque le mur même de Babylone croulera.
And I will visit against Bel in Babylon, and I will cast from his mouth what he has swallowed. And the nations will no longer flow together before him. For even the wall of Babylon will also fall.
45 Sortez d’au milieu d’elle, mon peuple, afin que chacun sauve son âme de la colère du Seigneur;
Go forth from her midst, my people, so that each one may save his life from the wrath of the fury of the Lord.
46 Et pour que votre cœur ne mollisse pas, et que vous ne craigniez pas le bruit qui s’entendra sur la terre; car dans une année viendra une nouvelle; et après cette année, une autre nouvelle; et l’iniquité sur la terre, et dominateur sur dominateur.
For otherwise, your heart may faint, and you may be afraid at the news that is heard in the land. And the news will arrive within a year, and after that year more news will arrive. And iniquity will be in the land, and one ruler will be over another ruler.
47 À cause de cela, voilà que des jours viennent, et je visiterai les images taillées au ciseau de Babylone; et toute sa terre sera couverte de confusion, et tous ses tués tomberont au milieu d’elle.
Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, when I will visit against the graven images of Babylon. And her entire land will be confounded, and all her slain will fall in her midst.
48 Et les cieux et la terre et tout ce qui est en eux loueront le Seigneur au sujet de Babylone; parce que ses spoliateurs viendront de l’aquilon, dit le Seigneur.
And the heavens and the earth, and all the things that are in them, will give praise over Babylon. For despoilers will approach her from the north, says the Lord.
49 Et comme Babylone a fait que des tués sont tombés en Israël, ainsi de Babylone tomberont des tués dans toute la terre.
And in the manner that Babylon has caused the slain to fall in Israel, so the slain of Babylon will fall over the entire earth.
50 Vous qui avez fui le glaive, venez, ne vous arrêtez point; souvenez-vous de loin du Seigneur, et que Jérusalem monte dans votre cœur.
You who have fled from the sword, approach, do not stand still. Remember from afar the Lord, and let Jerusalem rise up in your heart.
51 Nous avons été confondus, parce que nous avons entendu l’opprobre; l’ignominie a couvert nos faces, parce que sont venus des étrangers contre le sanctuaire de la maison du Seigneur.
We have been confounded, for we heard reproach. Shame has covered our faces, for strangers have overwhelmed the holiness of the house of the Lord.
52 À cause de cela, voilà que des jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, et je visiterai ses images taillées au ciseau; et dans toute sa terre mugiront des blessés.
Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will visit against her graven images, and within all her land the wounded will groan.
53 Quand Babylone serait montée jusqu’au ciel, et qu’elle aurait affermi en haut sa force, de moi lui viendront ses dévastateurs, dit le Seigneur.
If Babylon were to ascend to heaven, and establish her strength on high, her despoilers would go forth from me, says the Lord.”
54 Voix de clameur qui s’élève de Babylone, et grande destruction de la terre des Chaldéens;
A voice of outcry from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55 Parce que le Seigneur a ravagé Babylone, et détruit en elle une grande voix; et leurs flots retentiront comme de grandes eaux; leur voix a eu un retentissement;
For the Lord has despoiled Babylon, and he has perished the great voice from her. And their wave will make a sound like many waters. Their voice has uttered a noise.
56 Parce qu’il est venu sur elle, c’est-à-dire sur Babylone, un spoliateur, et que ses braves ont été pris, et que leur arc a perdu sa force; parce que le Seigneur, puissant vengeur, la rétribuera très certainement.
For the despoiler has overwhelmed her, that is, Babylon, and her strong ones have been apprehended, and their bow has been weakened. For the Lord, the powerful revenger, will certainly repay.
57 Et j’enivrerai ses princes, et ses sages, et ses chefs, et ses magistrats, et ses braves; et ils dormiront un sommeil éternel; et ils ne se réveilleront pas, dit le roi; le Seigneur des armées est son nom.
“And I will inebriate her leaders, and her wise ones, and her military rulers, and her civil rulers, and her strong ones. And they will sleep an everlasting sleep, and they will not awaken,” says the King: the Lord of hosts is his name.
58 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: Ce mur très large de Babylone sera sapé entièrement; et ses portes élevées seront brûlées par le feu; les travaux des peuples seront réduits au néant, et ceux des nations seront livrés au feu et périront entièrement.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “That very wide wall of Babylon will be utterly overturned, and her exalted gates will be burned with fire, and the labors of the people will be as nothing, and the labors of the nations will be sent into the fire and will perish.”
59 Ordre que donna Jérémie, le prophète, à Saraïas, fils de Nérias, lorsqu’il allait avec le roi Sédécias, à Babylone, la quatrième année de son règne; or Saraïas était prince de la prophétie.
The word that Jeremiah, the prophet, instructed to Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he traveled with king Zedekiah into Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was the leader of the prophets.
60 Et Jérémie écrivit tout le mal qui devait venir sur Babylone dans son livre, toutes ces paroles qui ont été écrites contre Babylone.
And Jeremiah wrote in one book all the evil that was to overwhelm Babylon; all these words were written against Babylon.
61 Et Jérémie dit à Saraïas: Lorsque tu seras venu à Babylone, et que tu auras vu, et que tu auras lu toutes ces paroles,
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: “When you will enter into Babylon, and you will see and read all these words,
62 Tu diras: Seigneur, c’est vous qui avez parlé contre ce lieu-ci, afin de le perdre entièrement, pour qu’il n’y ait personne qui l’habite depuis l’homme jusqu’à la bête, et afin qu’il soit une éternelle solitude.
you will say: ‘O Lord, you have spoken against this place so that you may destroy it, so that there would not be anyone, from man even to beast, who may live in it, and so that it may be desolate forever.’
63 Et lorsque tu auras achevé de lire ce livre, tu y attacheras une pierre et tu le jetteras au milieu de l’Euphrate;
And when you will have completed reading this book, you will tie a stone to it, and you will cast it into the midst of the Euphrates.
64 Et tu diras: Ainsi sera submergée Babylone, et elle ne se relèvera pas, à cause de l’affliction que moi j’amène sur elle; et elle sera détruite. Jusqu’ici ce sont les paroles de Jérémie.
And you will say: ‘So shall Babylon be submerged! And she will not rise up before the face of the affliction that I will lead over her. And she will be broken.’” The words of Jeremiah thus far.
