Jérémie 49
1 Aux fils d’Ammon, voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Est-ce qu’Israël n’a point d’enfants? ou n’a-t-il point d’héritiers? Pourquoi donc Melchom s’est-il emparé de Gad comme de son héritage, et son peuple a-t-il établi son habitation dans ses villes?
Against the children of Ammon. Thus saith the Lord: Hath Israel no sons? or hath he no heir? Why then hath Melchom inherited Gad: and his people dwelt in his cities?
2 C’est pourquoi, voilà que des jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, et je ferai entendre sur Rabbath des fils d’Ammon le frémissement d’un combat; et elle sera réduite par sa destruction en un monceau de pierres; et ses filles seront consumées par le feu. Israël possédera ceux qui le possédaient, dit le Seigneur
Therefore behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will cause the noise of war to be heard in Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and it shall be destroyed into a heap, and her daughters shall be burnt with fire, and Israel shall possess them that have possessed him, saith the Lord.
3 Hurle, Hésébon, parce que Haï a été ravagée; criez, filles de Rabbath; ceignez-vous de cilices; pleurez, et allez autour des haies, parce que Melchom sera emmené en exil, et ses prêtres et ses princes en même temps.
Howl, O Hesebon, for Hai is wasted. Cry, ye daughters of Rabbath, gird yourselves with haircloth: mourn and go about by the hedges: for Melchom shall be carried into captivity, his priests, and his princes together.
4 Pourquoi te glorifies-tu dans tes vallées? ta vallée s’est écoulée; fille délicate, qui te confiais en tes trésors, et disais: Qui viendra vers moi?
Why gloriest thou in the valleys? thy valley hath flowed away, O delicate daughter, that hast trusted in thy treasures, and hast said: Who shall come to me?
5 Voilà que j’amènerai sur toi la terreur, dit le Seigneur, Dieu des armées, la terreur de tous ceux qui t’environnent; vous serez dispersés les uns après les autres hors de votre présence, et il n’y aura personne qui rassemblera les fuyards.
Behold I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord God of hosts, from all that are round about thee: and you shall be scattered every one out of one another’s sight, neither shall there be any to gather together them that flee.
6 Et après cela, je ferai revenir les captifs des fils d’Ammon, dit le Seigneur.
And afterwards I will cause the captives of the children of Ammon to return, saith the Lord.
7 À l’Idumée. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: Est-ce qu’il n’y a plus de sagesse dans Théman? Le conseil les a abandonnés, leur sagesse est devenue inutile.
Against Edom. Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Theman? counsel is perished from her children: their wisdom is become unprofitable.
8 Fuyez, et tournez le dos, descendez dans le gouffre, habitants de Dédan, parce que j’ai amené la ruine sur Esaü, le temps de sa visite.
Flee and turn your backs, go down into the deep hole, ye inhabitants of Dedan: for I have brought the destruction of Esau upon him, the time of his visitation.
9 Si des vendangeurs étaient venus sur toi, ils t’auraient laissé une grappe; si des voleurs pendant la nuit, ils auraient emporté seulement ce qui leur aurait suffi.
If grapegatherers had come to thee, would they not have left a bunch? if thieves in the night, they would have taken what was enough for them.
10 Mais moi, j’ai découvert Esaü, j’ai révélé ce qu’il tenait caché, et il ne pourra plus être secret; sa race a été désolée, ainsi que ses frères et ses voisins; et il ne sera plus.
But I have made Esau bare, I have revealed his secrets, and he cannot be hid: his seed is laid waste, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he shall not be.
11 Laisse tes pupilles; mais je les ferai vivre; et tes veuves en moi espéreront.
Leave thy fatherless children: I will make them live: and thy widows shall hope in me.
12 Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que ceux qui n’avaient pas été jugés comme devant boire le calice, le buvant, le boiront; et toi, tu seras laissé comme innocent? Tu ne seras pas regardé comme innocent; mais buvant tu boiras.
For thus saith the Lord: Behold they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup, shall certainly drink: and shalt thou come off as innocent? thou shalt not come off as innocent, but drinking thou shalt drink.
13 Parce que j’ai juré par moi-même, dit le Seigneur, que Bosra deviendra une solitude, et un opprobre, et un désert, et une malédiction; et toutes ses cités deviendront des solitudes éternelles.
For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord, that Bosra shall become a desolation, and a reproach, and a desert, and a curse: and all her cities shall be everlasting wastes.
14 J’ai entendu une nouvelle venant du Seigneur, et un messager a été envoyé vers les nations: Rassemblez-vous et venez contre elle; et levons-nous pour le combat.
I have heard a rumour from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent to the nations: Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and let us rise up to battle.
15 Car voilà que je t’ai rendu petit parmi les nations, méprisable entre les hommes.
For behold I have made thee a little one among the nations, despicable among men.
16 Ton arrogance t’a trompé, ainsi que l’orgueil de ton cœur; toi qui habites dans des cavernes de pierres et qui t’efforces d’occuper le haut d’une colline; quand tu aurais élevé ton nid comme l’aigle, je t’arracherais de là, dit le Seigneur.
Thy arrogancy hath deceived thee, and the pride of thy heart: O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, and endeavourest to lay hold on the height of the hill: but though thou shouldst make thy nest as high as an eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.
17 Et l’Idumée sera déserte; car quiconque passera au milieu d’elle sera frappée de stupeur et sifflera sur ses plaies.
And Edom shall be desolate: every one that shall pass by it, shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all its plagues.
18 Comme Sodome a été renversée, ainsi que Gomorrhe et ses voisines, dit le Seigneur; un homme n’y habitera pas, et le fils d’un homme n’y séjournera pas.
As Sodom was overthrown and Gomorrha, and the neighbours thereof, saith the Lord: there shall not a man dwell there, and there shall no son of man inhabit it.
19 Voilà que, comme un lion, il montera de l’orgueil du Jourdain vers une beauté puissante; parce que soudain je le ferai courir vers elle; et quel est l’élu que je préposerai sur elle? Car qui est semblable à moi? qui tiendra contre moi? et quel est le pasteur qui résistera à mon visage?
Behold one shall come up as a lion from the swelling of the Jordan, against the strong and beautiful: for I will make him run suddenly upon her: and who shall be the chosen one whom I may appoint over her? for who is like to me? and who shall abide me? and who is that shepherd that can withstand my countenance?
20 Écoutez à cause de cela le dessein que le Seigneur a formé contre Edom, et les pensées qu’il a méditées contre les habitants de Théman; il a dit: Je jure, si les petits du troupeau ne les chassent pas, et s’ils ne détruisent pas avec eux leur habitation.
Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, which he hath taken concerning Edom: and his thoughts which he hath thought concerning the inhabitants of Theman: surely the little ones of the flock shall cast them down, of a truth they shall destroy them with their habitation.
21 À la voix de leur ruine la terre a été agitée; la clameur de leur voix sur la mer Rouge a été entendue.
The earth is moved at the noise of their fall: the cry of their voice is heard in the Red Sea.
22 Et comme l’aigle il remontera et il s’envolera; et il étendra ses ailes sur Bosra; et le cœur des forts de l’Idumée sera en ce jour-là comme le cœur d’une femme en travail.
Behold he shall come up as an eagle, and fly: and he shall spread his wings over Bosra: and in that day the heart of the valiant ones of Edom shall be as the heart of a woman in labour.
23 À Damas. Emath a été couvert de confusion, ainsi que Arphad, parce qu’elles ont entendu une nouvelle très mauvaise; elles ont été troublées comme sur la mer; par inquiétude elle n’a pu trouver de repos.
Against Damascus. Emath is confounded and Arphad: for they have heard very bad tidings, they are troubled as in the sea: through care they could not rest.
24 Damas a perdu courage, elle a été mise en fuite; la frayeur s’est emparée d’elle; l’angoisse et les douleurs l’ont saisie comme une femme en travail.
Damascus is undone, she is put to flight, trembling hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her as a woman in labour.
25 Comment ont-ils abandonné la cité renommée, la ville de l’allégresse?
How have they forsaken the city of renown, the city of joy!
26 Pour cela ses jeunes hommes tomberont sur ses places, et tous les hommes de guerre se tairont en ce jour-là, dit le Seigneur des armées.
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets: and all the men of war shall be silent in that day, saith the Lord of hosts.
27 Et j’allumerai un feu sur le mur de Damas, et il dévorera les remparts de Bénadad.
And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, rind it shall devour the strong holds of Benadad.
28 À Cédar, et aux royaumes d’Asor, qu’a détruits Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Levez-vous, et montez vers Cédar, et ravagez les fils de l’Orient.
Against Cedar and against the kingdoms of Asor, which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon destroyed. Thus saith the Lord: Arise, and go ye up to Cedar, and waste the children of the east.
29 Ils prendront leurs tabernacles et leurs troupeaux; ils prendront pour eux leurs pavillons, et leurs vases, et leurs chameaux, et ils appelleront sur eux la frayeur de toutes parts.
They shall take their tents, and their flocks: and shall carry off for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels: and they shall call fear upon them round about.
30 Fuyez, allez précipitamment, tenez-vous dans des antres, vous qui habitez Asor, dit le Seigneur; car Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, a formé un dessein contre vous, et il a médité contre vous des pensées.
Flee ye, get away speedily, sit in deep holes, you that inhabit Asur, saith the Lord: for Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived designs against you.
31 Levez-vous tous ensemble, et montez vers une nation tranquille, et qui habite en assurance, dit le Seigneur: ils n’ont pas de portes, ni de verrous: ils habitent seuls.
Arise, and so up to a nation that is at ease, and that dwelleth securely, saith the Lord: they have neither gates, nor bars: they dwell alone.
32 Et leurs chameaux seront au pillage; et la multitude de leurs troupeaux en proie; je les disperserai a tout vent, eux dont la chevelure est coupée; et de tous leurs confins j’amènerai la mort sur eux, dit le Seigneur.
And their camels shall be for a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle for a booty, and I will scatter into every wind them that have their hair cut round, and I will bring destruction upon them from I all their confines, saith the Lord.
33 Et Asor deviendra la demeure des dragons et un désert jusqu’à jamais; un homme n’y habitera pas, et le fils d’un homme n’y séjournera pas.
And Asor shall be a habitation for dragons, desolate for ever: no man shall abide there, nor son of man inhabit it.
34 Parole du Seigneur qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, contre Elam au commencement du règne de Sédécias, roi de Juda, disant:
The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias the prophet against Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Sedecias king of Juda, saying:
35 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: Voilà que moi je briserai l’arc d’Elam et toute leur force.
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Behold I will break the bow of Elam, and their chief strength.
36 Et j’amènerai sur Elam quatre vents, des quatre plages du ciel; je les disperserai vers tous ces vents, et il n’y aura pas de nation à laquelle ne parviennent les fugitifs d’Elam.
And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the fear quarters of heaven: and I will scatter them into all these winds: and there shall be no nation, to which the fugitives of Elam shall not come.
37 Je ferai trembler Elam devant ses ennemis et en la présence de ceux qui cherchent leur âme; et j’amènerai sur eux un malheur, la colère de ma fureur, dit le Seigneur, et j’enverrai après eux le glaive, jusqu’à ce que je les aie consumés.
And I will cause Elam to be afraid before their enemies, and in the sight of them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, my fierce wrath, saith the Lord: and will send the sword after them, till I consume them.
38 Et je poserai mon trône dans Elam, j’en exterminerai les rois et les princes, dit le Seigneur.
And I will set my throne in Elam, and destroy kings and princes from thence, saith the Lord.
39 Et dans les derniers jours, je ferai revenir les captifs d’Elam, dit le Seigneur.
But in the latter days I will cause the captives of Elam, to return, saith the Lord.
