Jérémie 42

1 Et s’approchèrent tous les princes des hommes de guerre, Johanan, fils de Carée, et Jézonias, fils d’Osaïas, et tout le reste du peuple, depuis le petit jusqu’au grand;

Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah, the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near,

2 Et ils dirent à Jérémie, le prophète: Que notre prière tombe en ta présence; et prie pour nous le Seigneur ton Dieu pour tous ces restes, parce que nous avons été laissés un petit nombre d’un bien plus grand, comme les yeux nous voient;

And said to Jeremiah the prophet, Let our request come before you, and make prayer for us to the Lord your God, even for this small band of us; for we are only a small band out of what was a great number, as your eyes may see:

3 Et que le Seigneur ton Dieu nous annonce la voie par laquelle nous devons marcher, et la parole que nous devons accomplir.

That the Lord your God may make clear to us the way in which we are to go and what we are to do.

4 Or Jérémie, le prophète, leur dit: J’ai entendu; voici que moi je prie le Seigneur votre Dieu, selon vos paroles; toute parole quelconque qu’il me répondra, je vous la ferai connaître, et je ne vous cacherai rien.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, I have given ear to you; see, I will make prayer to the Lord your God, as you have said; and it will be that, whatever the Lord may say in answer to you, I will give you word of it, keeping nothing back.

5 Et ceux-ci dirent à Jérémie: Que le Seigneur soit entre nous témoin de la vérité et de notre bonne foi, si nous n’agissons pas conformément à toute parole avec laquelle le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura envoyé vers nous.

Then they said to Jeremiah, May the Lord be a true witness against us in good faith, if we do not do everything which the Lord your God sends you to say to us.

6 Soit bonne, soit défavorable, nous obéirons à la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu, vers qui nous t’envoyons, afin que bien nous soit, lorsque nous aurons écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu.

If it is good or if it is evil, we will be guided by the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you; so that it may be well for us when we give ear to the voice of the Lord our God.

7 Or, lorsque dix jours eurent été accomplis, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie.

And it came about that after ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

8 Et il appela Johanan, fils de Carée, tous les princes des Sommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au grand.

And he sent for Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were still with him, and all the people, from the least to the greatest,

9 Et il leur dit: Voici ce que di t le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, vers qui vous m’avez envoyé afin de répandre vos prières en sa présence:

And said to them, These are the words of the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to put your request before him:

10 Si vous demeurez en repos dans cette terre, je vous édifierai, et je ne détruirai pas; je planterai, et je n’arracherai pas; car je suis apaisé par le mal que je vous ai fait.

If you still go on living in the land, then I will go on building you up and not pulling you down, planting you and not uprooting you: for my purpose of doing evil to you has been changed.

11 Ne craignez pas la face du roi de Babylone, que tremblants d’effroi vous redoutez; ne le craignez pas, dit le Seigneur, parce que moi je suis avec vous, afin de vous sauver, et de vous tirer de sa main.

Have no fear of the king of Babylon, of whom you are now in fear; have no fear of him, says the Lord: for I am with you to keep you safe and to give you salvation from his hands.

12 Et je vous donnerai mes miséricordes et j’aurai pitié de vous, et je vous ferai habiter dans votre terre.

And I will have mercy on you, so that he may have mercy on you and let you go back to your land.

13 Mais si vous dites: Nous n’habiterons pas dans cette terre, et nous n’écouterons pas la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu,

But if you say, We have no desire to go on living in this land; and do not give ear to the voice of the Lord your God,

14 Disant: En aucune manière; mais nous irons dans la terre d’Egypte, où nous ne verrons pas la guerre, où nous n’entendrons pas le bruit de la trompette, où nous ne souffrirons pas la faim, et nous y habiterons:

Saying, No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we will not see war, or be hearing the sound of the horn, or be in need of food; there we will make our living-place;

15 À cause de cela, écoutez maintenant la parole du Seigneur, restes de Juda. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Si vous tournez votre face afin d’entrer en Egypte, et que vous y entriez pour y habiter,

Then give ear now to the word of the Lord, O you last of Judah: the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said, If your minds are fixed on going into Egypt and stopping there;

16 Le glaive, que vous redoutez, vous atteindra là, dans la terre d’Egypte; et la famine, au sujet de laquelle vous êtes inquiets, s’attachera à vous en Egypte, et vous y mourrez.

Then it will come about that the sword, which is the cause of your fear, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and need of food, which you are fearing, will go after you there in Egypt; and there death will come to you.

17 Et tous les hommes qui ont tourné leurs faces afin d’entrer en Egypte et d’y habiter seront détruits par le glaive, et par la famine, et par la peste; et nul d’entre eux ne demeurera, et n’échappera à la face du mal que moi j’amènerai sur eux.

Such will be the fate of all the men whose minds are fixed on going into Egypt and stopping there; they will come to their end by the sword, by being short of food, and by disease: not one of them will keep his life or get away from the evil which I will send on them.

18 Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Comme ma colère et ma fureur se sont allumées contre les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi s’allumera contre vous mon indignation, lorsque vous serez entrés en Egypte; et vous serez en exécration, en stupeur, en malédiction et en opprobre; et jamais plus vous ne verrez ce lieu.

For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said: As my wrath and passion have been let loose on the people of Jerusalem, so will my passion be let loose on you when you go into Egypt: and you will become an oath and a cause of wonder and a curse and a name of shame; and you will never see this place again.

19 Voici la parole du Seigneur sur vous, restes de Juda: N’entrez pas en Egypte; sachant, vous saurez que je vous ai protesté aujourd’hui,

The Lord has said about you, O last of Judah, Go not into Egypt: be certain that I have given witness to you this day.

20 Que vous avez trompé vos âmes; car c’est vous qui m’avez envoyé vers le Seigneur notre Dieu, disant: Prie pour nous le Seigneur notre Dieu; et tout ce que t’aura dit le Seigneur notre Dieu, annonce-nous-le, et nous le ferons.

For you have been acting with deceit in your hearts; for you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, Make prayer for us to the Lord our God, and give us word of everything he may say, and we will do it.

21 Et je vous l’ai annoncé aujourd’hui, et vous n’avez pas écouté la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu, dans toutes les choses pour lesquelles il m’a envoyé vers vous.

And this day I have made it clear to you, and you have not given ear to the voice of the Lord your God in anything for which he has sent me to you.

22 Maintenant donc, sachant, vous saurez que c’est par le glaive, et par la famine, et par la peste que vous mourrez dans le lieu dans lequel vous avez voulu entrer afin d’y habiter.

And now be certain that you will come to your end by the sword and by being short of food and by disease, in the place to which you are pleased to go for a living-place.
