Jérémie 2
1 Et la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant:
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
2 Va, et crie aux oreilles de Jérusalem, disant: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Je me suis souvenu de toi, ayant compassion de ta jeunesse, et de l’amour de tes fiançailles, lorsque tu me suivis dans le désert, dans une terre qui n’est pas cultivée.
Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the Lord: I have remembered thee, pitying thy soul, pitying thy youth, and the love of thy espousals, when thou followedst me in the desert, in a land that is not sown.
3 Israël a été consacré au Seigneur; il est les prémices de ses fruits; tous ceux qui le dévorent se rendent coupables; les maux viendront sur eux, dit le Seigneur.
Israel is holy to the Lord, the first fruits of his increase: all they that devour him offend: evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.
4 Ecoutez la parole du Seigneur, maison de Jacob, et vous toutes, les familles d’Israël.
Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel.
5 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Quelle iniquité ont trouvée vos pères en moi, pour s’être éloignés de moi, avoir couru après la vanité, et être devenus vains eux-mêmes?
Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
6 Et ils n’ont pas dit: Où est le Seigneur qui nous a fait monter de la terre d’Egypte; qui nous a conduits à travers le désert, par une terre inhabitable et inaccessible, par une terre aride et image de la mort, par une terre dans laquelle homme n’a passé, et homme n’a habité?
And they have not said: Where is the Lord, that made us come up out of the land of Egypt? that led us through the desert, through a land uninhabited and unpassable, through a land of drought, and the image of death, through a land wherein no man walked, nor any man dwelt?
7 Et je vous ai fait entrer dans une terre de carmel, afin que vous en mangiez les fruits et que vous jouissiez de ses biens; et étant entrés, vous avez souillé ma terre, et de mon héritage vous avez fait une abomination.
And I brought you into the land of Carmel, to eat the fruit thereof, and the best things thereof: and when ye entered in, you defiled my land, and made my inheritance an abomination.
8 Les prêtres n’ont pas dit: Où est le Seigneur? les dépositaires de la loi ne m’ont pas connu, les pasteurs ont prévariqué contre moi, et les prophètes ont prophétisé au nom de Baal, et ont suivi les idoles.
The priests did not say: Where is the Lord? and they that held the law knew me not, and the pastors transgressed against me: and the prophets prophesied in Baal, and followed idols.
9 À cause de cela, j’entrerai encore en jugement avec vous, dit le Seigneur, et avec vos fils je discuterai.
Therefore will I yet contend in judgement with you, saith the Lord, and I will plead with your children.
10 Passez aux îles de Céthim, et voyez; et envoyez à Cédar, et considérez avec le plus grand soin, et voyez s’il y a été fait quelque chose de semblable;
Pass over to the isles of Cethim, and see: and send into Cedar, and consider diligently: and see if there hath been done any thing like this.
11 Si une nation a changé ses dieux, et certainement ce ne sont pas des dieux; et cependant mon peuple a changé sa gloire en une idole.
If a nation hath changed their gods, and indeed they are not gods: but my people have changed their glory into an idol.
12 Cieux, soyez frappés de stupeur sur cela; et vous, portes du ciel, soyez dans la plus grande désolation, dit le Seigneur.
Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and ye gates thereof, be very desolate, saith the Lord.
13 Car mon peuple a fait deux maux: ils m’ont abandonné, moi, source d’eau vive, et ils se sont creusé des citernes, des citernes entr’ouvertes qui ne peuvent retenir les eaux.
For my people have done two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
14 Est-ce qu’Israël est un esclave ou fils d’un esclave? pourquoi donc est-il devenu en proie?
Is Israel a bondman, or a homeborn slave? why then is he become prey?
15 Les lions ont rugi sur lui, ils ont fait entendre leur voix, ils ont réduit sa terre en une solitude; ses cités ont été brûlées, et il n’y a personne qui y habite.
The lions have roared upon him, and have made a noise, they have made his land a wilderness: his cities are burnt down and there is none to dwell in them.
16 Les fils de Memphis et de Taphnès t’ont déshonorée jusqu’au sommet de la tête.
The children also of Memphis, and of Taphnes have deflowered thee, even to the crown of the head.
17 Est-ce que tout cela ne t’est pas arrivé, parce que tu as abandonné le Seigneur ton Dieu, dans le temps même où il te gardait dans la droite voie?
Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God at that time, when he led thee by the way?
18 Et maintenant que veux-tu faire dans la voie de l’Egypte? boire de l’eau bourbeuse? et que t’importe la voie des Assyriens? est-ce pour boire de l’eau d’un fleuve?
And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water? And what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of the river?
19 Ta malice t’accusera, et ton éloignement de moi te gourmandera. Sache et vois combien il est mal et amer d’avoir abandonné le Seigneur ton Dieu, et de n’avoir plus ma crainte auprès de toi, dit le Seigneur Dieu des armées.
Thy own wickedness shall reprove thee, and thy apostasy shall rebuke thee. Know thou, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing for thee, to have left the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not with thee, saith the Lord the God of hosts.
20 Dès les temps anciens tu as brisé mon joug, tu as rompu mes liens et tu as dit: Je ne servirai pas. Sur toute colline élevée, sous tout arbre touffu, tu te prostituais comme une femme de mauvaise vie.
Of old time thou hast broken my yoke, thou hast burst my bands, and thou saidst: I will not serve. For on every high hill, and under every green tree thou didst prostitute thyself.
21 Pour moi, je t’avais plantée comme une vigne choisie, comme un plant franc: comment donc es-tu devenue pour moi un plant bâtard, ô vigne étrangère?
Yet I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard?
22 Quand tu te laverai s avec du nitre, quand tu multiplierais pour toi le borith, tu es souillée par ton iniquité devant moi, dit le Seigneur Dieu.
Though thou wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself the herb borith, thou art stained in thy iniquity before me, saith the Lord God.
23 Comment dis-tu: Je ne suis pas souillée, je n’ai pas couru après les Baalim? Regarde tes voies dans la vallée; sache ce que tu as tait; tu es comme un coureur léger étendant ses voies.
How canst thou say: I am not polluted, and I have not walked after Baalim? see thy ways in the valley, know what thou hast done: as a swift runner pursuing his course.
24 Anesse sauvage accoutumée à vivre dans la solitude, dans le désir de son âme, elle a attiré à elle le vent de son amour; nul ne la détournera: tous ceux qui la cherchent ne se fatigueront pas: ils la trouveront dans ses souillures.
A wild ass accustomed to the wilderness in the desire of his heart, snuffed up the wind of his love: none shall turn her away: all that seek her shall not fail: in her monthly filth they shall find her.
25 Préserve ton pied de la nudité, et ton gosier de la soif. Et tu as dit: J’ai perdu tout espoir, je n’en ferai rien; car j’ai aimé avec passion des étrangers, et c’est à leur suite que je marcherai.
Keep thy foot from being bare, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst: I have lost all hope, I will not do it: for I have loved strangers, and I will walk after them.
26 Comme est confondu un voleur, quand il est surpris, ainsi ont été confondus ceux de la maison d’Israël, eux-mêmes, et leurs rois, leurs princes, et leurs prêtres, et leurs prophètes,
As the thief is confounded when he is taken, so is the house of Israel confounded, they and their kings, their princes and their priests, and their prophets.
27 Disant au bois: Mon père, c’est toi; et à la pierre: C’est toi qui m’as engendré; ils ont tourné vers moi le dos et non la face, et au temps de leur affliction ils diront: Seigneur, levez-vous, et délivrez-nous.
Saying to a stock: Thou art my father: and to a stone: thou hast begotten me: they have turned their back to me, and not their face: and in the time of their affliction they will say: Arise, and deliver us.
28 Où sont tes dieux que tu t’es faits? qu’ils se lèvent, qu’ils te délivrent au temps de ton affliction; car selon le nombre de tes cités, était le nombre de tes dieux, ô Juda.
Where are the gods, whom thou hast made thee? let them arise and deliver thee in the time of thy affliction: for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda.
29 Pourquoi voulez-vous entrer avec moi en jugement? tous, vous m’avez abandonné, dit le Seigneur.
Why will you contend with me in judgement? you have all forsaken me, saith the Lord.
30 En vain j’ai frappé vos enfants, ils n’ont pas reçu la correction; votre glaive a dévoré vos prophètes; comme un lion destructeur est
In vain have I struck your children, they have not received correction: your sword hath devoured your prophets, your generation is like a ravaging lion.
31 Votre génération. Voyez la parole du Seigneur: Est-ce que je suis devenu pour Israël une solitude ou une terre tardive? Pourquoi donc mon peuple a-t-il dit: Nous nous sommes retirés, nous ne viendrons plus à vous?
See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more.
32 Est-ce qu’une vierge oubliera sa parure; ou une épouse la bandelette qu’elle porte sur la poitrine? mais mon peuple m’a oublié pendant des jours innombrables.
Will a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her stomacher? but my people hath forgotten me days without number.
33 Pourquoi t’efforces-tu de montrer comme bonne ta voie, pour rechercher mon amour, lorsque d’ailleurs tu as enseigné tes méchancetés comme étant tes voies,
Why dost thou endeavour to shew thy way good to seek my love, thou who has also taught thy malices to be thy ways,
34 Et que dans les pans de ta robe a été trouvé le sang des âmes des pauvres et des innocents? Ce n’est pas dans les fosses que je les ai trouvés; mais dans tous les lieux que j’ai rappelés plus haut.
And in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before.
35 Et tu as dit: Moi je suis sans péché, et innocente; que votre fureur se détourne donc de moi. Voici que j’entrerai en jugement avec toi, puisque tu as dit: Je n’ai pas péché.
And thou hast said: I am without sin and am innocent: and therefore let thy anger be turned away from me. Behold, I will contend with thee in judgement, because thou hast said: I have not sinned.
36 Combien tu es devenue vile en renouvelant tes voies! Ainsi tu seras confondue par l’Egypte, comme tu as été confondue par Assur.
How exceeding base art thou become, going the same ways over again! and thou shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37 Car d’elle aussi tu sortiras, et tes mains seront sur ta tête, parce que le Seigneur a brisé cet objet de ton assurance, et tu n’y trouveras rien d’avantageux.
For from thence thou shalt go, and thy hand shall be upon thy head: for the Lord hath destroyed thy trust, and thou shalt have nothing prosperous therein.
