Jérémie 10
1 Ecoutez la parole que le Seigneur a dite sur vous, maison d’Israël.
Hear ye the word which the Lord hath spoken concerning you, O house of Israel:
2 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: N’apprenez pas les voies des nations, et ne redoutez pas les signes du ciel, que craignent les nations;
Thus hath said the Lord, Do not habituate yourselves on the way of the nations, and at the signs of the heavens be ye not dismayed; although the nations should be dismayed at them.
3 Parce que les lois des peuples sont vaines; parce que l’œuvre de la main d’un ouvrier habile a coupé du bois de la forêt avec la hache.
For the statutes of these people concern what is vanity; for it is but a tree which a man hath cut out of a forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 Elle l’a orné d’or et d’argent; elle en a joint les parties avec des clous et des marteaux, afin qu’il ne se désunisse pas.
With silver and with gold do they ornament it; with nails and with hammers do they fasten it, that it move not from its place.
5 Ces œuvres ont été fabriquées en forme de palmier; elles ne parleront pas; on les portera, on les enlèvera, parce qu’elles ne peuvent marcher; ne les craignez donc pas, parce qu’elles ne peuvent faire ni mal ni bien.
As a wrought-out palm-like column are they, and cannot speak; they must needs be borne, because they cannot step along. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do any harm, so also to do any good is not in them.
6 Il n’est pas de semblable à vous, Seigneur; vous êtes grand, vous, et grand est votre nom en puissance.
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord: thou [alone] art great, and great is thy name in might.
7 Qui ne vous craindra pas, ô roi des nations? car à vous est la gloire parmi tous les sages des nations, et dans tous leurs royaumes nul n’est semblable à vous.
Who would not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, [they say] there is none like unto thee.
8 Tous également seront reconnus insensés et stupides; c’est une doctrine vaine que leur bois.
But at once shall they be shown to be brutish and foolish: it is a doctrine of vanities, it concerneth but wood.
9 On apporte de l’argent enveloppé de Tharsis et de l’or d’Ophaz, ouvrage d’un artisan, et de la main d’un ouvrier en airain; l’hyacinthe et la pourpre sont leur vêtement; tout cela est un ouvrage d’artisans.
The beaten out silver is brought from Tharshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the goldsmith: blue and purple is their clothing; the work of skilful men are they all.
10 Mais le Seigneur est le vrai Dieu; lui-même est le Dieu vivant et le roi éternel; par son indignation la terre sera ébranlée, et les nations ne soutiendront pas sa menace.
But the Lord God is the truth, he is the living God, and the everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall quake, and nations cannot endure his indignation.
11 Ainsi donc tu leur diras: Que les dieux qui n’ont pas fait les deux et la terre disparaissent de la terre et de ce qui est sous le ciel.
Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, shall perish away from the earth, and from under these heavens.
12 C’est le Seigneur qui fait la terre dans sa puissance, qui prépare le globe dans sa sagesse, et étend les cieux par sa prudence.
He made the earth by his power, he established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding he stretched out the heavens.
13 À sa voix il met une quantité d’eaux dans le ciel, et il élève les nuées des extrémités de la terre; les éclairs, il les résout en pluie, et il fait sortir les vents de ses trésors.
At the sound when he giveth a multitude of waters in the heavens, and causeth clouds to ascend from the ends of the earth; when he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures:
14 Tout homme est devenu insensé par sa propre science; tout artisan a été confondu par son image taillée au ciseau, parce que c’est une chose fausse qu’il a fondue, et la vie n’y est pas.
Then standeth every man as brutish without knowledge; ashamed is every goldsmith because of the graven image; for falsehood is his molten work, and there is no breath therein.
15 Ce sont des choses vaines, un ouvrage digne de risée; au temps de sa visite elles périront.
They are vanity, the work of deception; in the time of their punishment shall they vanish.
16 Il n’est pas semblable à ces choses, celui qui est la part de Jacob; car celui qui a formé toutes choses, c’est lui-même, et Israël est la verge de son héritage; et le Seigneur des armées est son nom.
Not like these is the portion of Jacob; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: The Lord of hosts is his name.
17 Rassemble de la terre ta confusion, toi qui restes assiégée;
Gather up thy wares from the ground, O inhabitress of the beleaguered city.
18 Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je jetterai au loin les habitants de cette terre cette fois; et je les affligerai, de telle sorte qu’on les saisira.
For thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will cast forth as with a sling the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will enclose them, in order that they may find them.
19 Malheur à moi, à cause de ma ruine; ma plaie est très grave. Mais moi j’ai dit: Ce mal vient entièrement de moi, et je le supporterai.
Woe is me for my breach! my wound is painful; but I thought, This is but pain, and I shall be able to bear it.
20 Mon tabernacle a été dévasté, mes cordages ont été rompus; mes fils sont sortis de mon enceinte, et n’existent pas; il n’y a personne qui tende désormais ma tente et dresse mes pavillons.
[But now] my tent is laid waste, and all my cords are torn asunder; my children are gone away from me, and they are not [here]; there is no one to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
21 Parce que les pasteurs ont agi en insensés, et qu’ils n’ont pas cherché le Seigneur; à cause de cela ils ont été sans intelligence, et tout leur troupeau a été dispersé.
For the shepherds were brutish, and the Lord had they not sought; therefore have they not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.
22 Voici qu’une voix retentissante vient, ainsi qu’un grand tumulte, de la terre de l’aquilon, pour faire des cités de Juda une solitude, et une demeure de dragons.
Behold, the noise of the report is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to render the cities of Judah desolate, a dwelling for monsters.
23 Je sais, Seigneur, qu’à l’homme n’appartient pas sa voie, et qu’il n’est pas de l’homme de marcher et de diriger ses pas.
I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in his own power: it is not in man that passeth away to direct his own steps.
24 Châtiez-moi, Seigneur, mais cependant dans votre justice, et non dans votre fureur, de peur que vous ne me réduisiez au néant.
Correct me, O Lord, but with justice; not in thy anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
25 Répandez votre indignation sur les nations qui ne vous ont pas connu, et sur les provinces qui n’ont pas invoqué votre nom; parce qu’elles ont mangé Jacob, et l’ont dévoré, et l’ont consumé, et ont dissipé sa gloire.
Pour out thy fury over the nations that know thee not, and over the families that have not called on thy name; for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his dwelling desolate.
