Isaïe 58
1 Crie et ne cesse point; comme la trompette élève ta voix, et annonce à mon peuple ses crimes, et à la maison de Jacob ses péchés.
Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Car c’est moi que de jour en jour ils cherchent, et ils veulent connaître mes voies; comme une nation qui aurait pratiqué la justice et qui n’aurait pas abandonné le jugement de son Dieu; ils me demandent des jugements de justice, et ils veulent s’approcher de Dieu.
For they seek me from day to day, sad desire to know my ways, as a nation that hath done justice, and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God: they ask of me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God.
3 Pourquoi, disent-ils, avons-nous jeûné, et n’avez-vous pas regardé? Pourquoi avons-nous humilié nos âmes, et ne l’avez-vous pas su? Voici qu’au jour de votre jeûne se trouve votre volonté, et que vous poursuivez vos débiteurs.
Why have we fasted, and thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found, and you exact of all your debtors.
4 Voici que vous jeûnez pour susciter des procès et des querelles, et que vous frappez du poing impitoyablement. Ne jugez pas comme jusqu’à ce jour, pour que vos cris retentissent dans l’air.
Behold you fast for debates and strife. and strike with the fist wickedly. Do not fast as you have done until this day, to make your cry to be heard on high.
5 Est-ce que le jeûne que j’ai choisi est tel que pendant un jour un homme afflige son âme, contourne sa tête comme un cercle, et se couvre d’un sac et de cendre? Est-ce là ce que tu appelleras un jeûne, et un jour agréable au Seigneur?
Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 Le jeûne que j’ai choisi n’est-il pas celui-ci? romps les liens de l’impiété, délie les faisceaux accablants, renvoie libres ceux qui sont opprimés, et brise tout fardeau.
Is not this rather the fast that I have chosen? loose the bands of wickedness, undo the bundles that oppress, let them that are broken go free, and break asunder every burden.
7 Romps ton pain pour celui qui a faim, et fais entrer dans ta maison les indigents et ceux qui errent sans asile; lorsque tu verras quelqu’un nu, couvre-le, et ne méprise point ta chair.
Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the needy and the harbourless into thy house: when thou shalt see one naked, cover him, and despise not thy own flesh.
8 Alors ta lumière éclatera comme le matin, et bientôt la guérison se montrera; ta justice marchera devant ta face, et la gloire du Seigneur te recueillera.
Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy health shall speedily arise, and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the glory of the Lord shall gather thee up.
9 Alors tu invoqueras le Seigneur, et le Seigneur t’exaucera; tu crieras, et il dira: Me voici; si tu ôtes du milieu de toi la chaîne, et si tu cesses d’étendre le doigt et de dire ce qui n’est pas utile.
Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall hear: thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou wilt take away the chain out of the midst of thee, and cease to stretch out the finger, and to speak that which profiteth not.
10 Si tu prodigues ton âme à celui qui a faim, et si tu remplis de consolation une âme affligée, ta lumière se lèvera dans les ténèbres, et tes ténèbres seront comme le midi.
When thou shalt pour out thy soul to the hungry, and shalt satisfy the afflicted soul then shall thy light rise up in darkness, and thy darkness shall be as the noonday.
11 Et le Seigneur te donnera le repos sans interruption, et il remplira ton âme de splendeurs; il délivrera tes os, et tu seras comme un jardin arrosé, et comme une fontaine d’eau, à laquelle les eaux ne manqueront pas.
And the Lord will give thee rest continually, and will fill thy soul with brightness, and deliver thy bones, and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a fountain of water whose waters shall not fail.
12 Et par toi seront remplis d’édifices des lieux déserts depuis des siècles; tu relèveras des fondements abandonnés pendant plusieurs générations, et tu seras appelé constructeur des haies, mettant les sentiers en repos.
And the places that have been desolate for ages shall be built in thee: thou shalt raise up the foundations of generation and generation: and thou shalt be called the repairer of the fences, turning the paths into rest.
13 Si tu t’abstiens, à cause du sabbat, d’avancer ton pied et de faire ta volonté dans le -jour qui m’est consacré; si tu appelles le sabbat délicieux, jour du Seigneur saint et glorieux; si tu le glorifies en ne suivant pas tes voies, et si tu ne mets pas ta volonté à dire des paroles vaines,
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy own will in my holy day, and call the sabbath delightful, and the holy of the Lord glorious, and glorify him, while thou dost not thy own ways, and thy own will is not found: to speak a word:
14 Alors tu trouveras des délices dans le Seigneur; je t’élèverai sur les hauteurs de la terre, et je te nourrirai avec l’héritage de Jacob ton père, car la bouche du Seigneur a parlé.
Then shalt thou be delighted in the Lord, and I will lift thee up above the high places of the earth, and will feed thee with the inheritance of Jacob thy father. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
