Isaïe 47
1 Descends, assieds-toi dans la poussière, vierge, fille de Babylone; assieds-toi sur la terre; il n’y a pas de trône pour la fille des Chaldéens, tu ne seras plus appelée délicate et tendre.
Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: [there is] no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Tourne la meule, fais moudre la farine: mets à nu ta honte, et découvre ton épaule, relève ta robe, passe des fleuves.
Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
3 Ton ignominie sera dévoilée, et on verra ton opprobre; je me vengerai, et pas d’homme ne me résistera.
Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet [thee as] a man.
4 Notre rédempteur, son nom est le Seigneur des armées, le saint d’Israël.
[As for] our redeemer, the LORD of hosts [is] his name, the Holy One of Israel.
5 Assieds-toi en silence, et entre dans les ténèbres, fille des Chaldéens, parce que tu ne seras plus appelée dominatrice des royaumes.
Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
6 J’ai été irrité contre mon peuple, j’ai traité comme une chose souillée mon héritage, je les ai mis en ta main, tu ne leur as pas accordé de miséricorde; sur le vieillard tu as appesanti ton joug outre mesure.
I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.
7 Et tu as dit: À jamais je serai souveraine; tu n’as pas mis ces choses sur ton cœur, et tu ne t’es pas souvenue de ton dernier moment.
And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.
8 Et maintenant, écoute ceci, voluptueuse, qui demeures en pleine assurance, qui dis en ton cœur: Moi je suis, et il n’y a hors moi personne plus; je ne resterai pas veuve, et j’ignorerai la stérilité.
Therefore hear now this, [thou that art] given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me; I shall not sit [as] a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
9 Ces deux maux te viendront soudain, en un jour, la stérilité, et la viduité; tous viendront sur toi, à cause de la multitude de tes maléfices, et à cause de la dureté violente de tes enchanteurs.
But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
10 Et tu as eu confiance dans ta malice, et tu as dit: Il n’y a personne qui me voit. Ta sagesse, et ta science, c’est ce qui t’a séduite. Et tu as dit dans ton cœur: Moi je suis, et hors moi, il n’y en a pas d’autre.
For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me.
11 Il viendra sur toi un malheur et tu ne sauras pas son origine; il fondra sur toi une calamité que tu ne pourras conjurer; il viendra sur toi soudainement une misère, que tu ne connaîtras pas.
Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, [which] thou shalt not know.
12 Parais avec tes enchanteurs, et avec la multitude de tes maléfices auxquels tu t’es appliquée dès ta jeunesse, pour voir si par hasard quelqu’un d’eux te sera utile, ou si tu pourras devenir plus forte.
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Tu as défailli dans la multitude de tes conseils; qu’ils paraissent et qu’ils te sauvent, ceux qui observaient le ciel, qui contemplaient les astres, et supputaient les mois, afin de t’annoncer par ce moyen ce qui doit t’arriver.
Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee.
14 Voici qu’ils sont devenus comme de la paille, un feu les a brûlés; ils ne délivreront pas leur âme de la main de la flamme; ce ne sont pas des charbons ardents avec lesquels on se chauffe, ni un foyer auprès duquel on s’assied.
Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.
15 Ainsi sont devenues toutes ces choses auxquelles tu t’étais appliquée; ceux qui ont trafiqué avec toi dès ta jeunesse ont erré, chacun dans sa voie; il n’en est pas qui te sauve.
Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, [even] thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
