1 Ce que voyant Joseph, il se jeta sur le visage de son père, pleurant et l’embrassant.
And Joseph fell upon the face of his father, and wept upon him and kissed him.
2 Et il ordonna aux médecins qui étaient à son service d’embaumer son père.
Then Joseph commanded his servants the physicians, to embalm his father, —so the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 Pendant qu’ils exécutaient cet ordre, quarante jours se passèrent; car telle était la coutume pour les corps embaumés; et l’Égypte pleura Jacob pendant soixante-dix jours.
And they fulfilled for him forty days, for so, are they wont to fulfil the days of the embalmed, —and the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
4 Or le temps du deuil accompli, Joseph dit à la famille de Pharaon: Si j’ai trouvé grâce devant vous, faites entendre aux oreilles de Pharaon,
And, when the days of weeping for him were passed, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh saying, —If I pray you, I have found favour in your eyes, speak ye I pray you in the ears of Pharaoh saying:
5 Que mon père m’a adjuré, disant: Voici que je meurs; vous m’ensevelirez dans le sépulcre que je me suis creusé dans la terre de Chanaan. J’y monterai donc, et j’ensevelirai mon père, et je reviendrai.
My father, made me swear saying, —Lo! I, am about to die, —in my grave which I digged for myself in the land of Canaan, there, shalt thou bury me. Now, therefore, let me go up, I pray thee and bury my father, and return.
6 Et Pharaon lui dit: Montes-y et ensevelis ton père, comme tu as été adjuré.
And Pharaoh said, —Go up., and bury thy father according as he made thee swear.
7 Joseph y montant, avec lui allèrent tous les anciens de la maison de Pharaon, tous les anciens de la terre d’Égypte,
So Joseph went up. to bury his father, —and there went up with him all the servants of Pharaoh the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt;
8 La maison de Joseph, avec ses frères, excepté les petits enfants, les troupeaux de menu et de gros bétail, qu’ils laissèrent dans la terre de Gessen.
and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and the house of his father, —only their little ones and their flocks and their herds, left they. in the land of Goshen.
9 Il eut aussi à sa suite des chars et des esclaves; et il se forma une troupe considérable.
And there went up with him, both chariots and horsemen, —so it came to pass that, the company, was exceeding great,
10 Ils vinrent à l’aire d’Atad, qui est située au-delà du Jourdain, où ils passèrent sept jours pleins, célébrant les funérailles par un deuil grand et solennel.
And they came in, as far as the threshing-floor of the Buckthorn, which is beyond the Jordan, then wailed they there—an exceeding great and grievous wailing, —and he made for his father a mourning, of seven days.
11 Ce qu’ayant vu les habitants de la terre de Chanaan, ils dirent: Voilà un grand deuil parmi les Égyptiens. Et c’est pourquoi on appela ce lieu du nom de Deuil de l’Égypte.
And when the dwellers in the land—the Canaanites—saw the mourning in the threshing-floor of the Buckthorn, they said, —A grievous mourning, this! for the Egyptians. For this cause, was the name thereof called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
12 Les fils de Jacob firent donc comme il leur avait commandé;
And his sons did for him thus as he had commanded them;
13 Et le portant dans la terre de Chanaan, ils l’ensevelirent dans la caverne double, située vis-à-vis de Mambré, et qu’Abraham avait achetée d’Ephron l’Héthéen, avec le champ, pour y posséder un sépulcre.
so his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, —which Abraham bought—with the field—for a possession of a buryingplace from Ephron the Hittite over against Mamre.
14 Et Joseph retourna en Égypte avec ses frères et toute sa suite, son père ayant été enseveli.
Then Joseph returned to Egypt he and his brethren and all who had been up with him to bury his father, —after he had buried his father.
15 Jacob mort, les frères de Joseph craignant et se disant mutuellement: Pourvu qu’il ne se souvienne pas de l’injure qu’il a soufferte, et qu’il ne nous rende point tout le mal que nous lui avons fait,
Now when the brethren of Joseph saw that their father was dead, they said—Oh! if Joseph should lie in wait for us, —and should return, to us, all the evil wherewith we requited him!
16 Ils envoyèrent vers lui, disant: Votre père nous a commandé, avant qu’il mourût,
So they sent in charge unto Joseph saying, —Thy father, gave command before he died saying:
17 Que nous vous disions en ses propres paroles: Je te conjure d’oublier le crime de tes frères, leur péché et la malice qu’ils ont exercée contre toi: nous aussi nous vous prions de pardonner cette iniquité aux serviteurs du Dieu de votre père. Ces paroles entendues, Joseph pleura.
Thus, shall ye say to Joseph—Ah now! do forgive we pray thee the transgression of thy brethren and their sin in that with evil, they requited thee. Now, therefore grant forgiveness we pray thee, for the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father! And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.
18 Et ses frères vinrent à lui, et inclinés, se prosternant en terre, ils dirent: Nous sommes vos serviteurs.
Then went his brethren also, and fell down before him, —and said, Behold us! thine for servants.
19 Joseph leur répondit: Ne craignez point: Est-ce que nous pouvons résister à la volonté de Dieu?
And Joseph said unto them—Do not fear, —although in place of God, I am.
20 Vous, vous avez formé un mauvais dessein contre moi, mais Dieu l’a changé en bien, pour m’élever, comme vous voyez à présent, et pour sauver beaucoup de peuples.
Ye, indeed, planned against me, evil, —God, planned it, for good, for the sake of doing, as at this day, to save alive much people.
21 Ne craignez point: c’est moi qui vous nourrirai, vous et vos petits enfants; et il les consola, et il leur parla avec affection et douceur.
Now, therefore do not fear! I will nourish you and your little ones. Thus he consoled them, and spake unto their heart.
22 Il habita donc en Égypte avec toute la maison de son père, et il vécut cent dix ans. Et il vit les enfants d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la troisième génération. Les enfants même de Machir fils de Manassé naquirent sur les genoux de Joseph.
And Joseph abode in Egypt, he, and his father’s house, —and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
23 Ces choses s’étant passées, Joseph dit à ses frères: Après ma mort Dieu vous visitera et vous fera monter de cette terre à celle qu’il a jurée à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
And Joseph saw Ephraim’s, sons of three generations—moreover the sons of Machir, son of Manasseh, were born upon Joseph’s knees.
24 Et lorsqu’il les eut adjurés, et leur eut dit: Dieu vous visitera; emportez mes os avec vous de ce lieu-ci,
Then said Joseph unto his brethren, I, am about to die, —but God will surely concern, himself for you, so will he take you up out of this land, into the land which he sware to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob.
25 Il mourut, cent dix ans de sa vie ayant été accomplis. Et ayant été embaumé, il fut mis dans un cercueil en Égypte.
Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear saying, —God will, surely concern, himself for you, So shall ye carry up my bones, from hence.
So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old, —and they embalmed him, and put him in a coffin in Egypt.
