Genèse 48

1 Ces choses s’étant ainsi passées, on annonça à Joseph que son père était malade; or, Joseph ayant pris avec lui ses deux fils, Manassé et Ephraïm, se mit en chemin.

And it came to pass after these things, that one said to Joseph, Lo! thy father, is sick. So he took his two sons with him, Manasseh and Ephraim.

2 Et on dit au vieillard: Voici votre fils Joseph qui vient vers vous. Or reprenant ses forces, il s’assit sur son lit.

And one told Jacob, and said—Lo! thy son Joseph, coming in unto thee. So Israel strengthened himself, and sat up on the couch.

3 Et quand Joseph fut entré près de lui, il dit: Le Dieu tout-puissant m’a apparu à Luza qui est dans la terre de Chanaan, et il m’a béni,

Then said Jacob unto Joseph, GOD Almighty, appeared unto me in Luz in the land of Canaan, —and blessed me;

4 Et a dit: Je te ferai croître et te multiplierai, et je te ferai le père d’une multitude de peuples; et je te donnerai cette terre, et à ta postérité après toi, en possession éternelle.

and said unto me—Behold me! about to make thee fruitful, so will I multiply thee, and give thee to become a multitude of peoples, —so will I give this land to thy seed after thee, as an age-abiding possession.

5 C’est pourquoi tes deux fils qui te sont nés en Égypte, avant que je vinsse vers toi, seront miens. Ephraïm et Manassé comme Ruben et Siméon seront censés à moi.

Now, therefore thy two sons who were born to thee in the land of Egypt, before I came in unto thee in Egypt, are mine! Ephraim and Manasseh, like Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine!

6 Mais les autres que tu auras engendrés après eux, seront tiens, et ils seront appelés du nom de leurs frères dans leurs possessions.

But thine offspring which thou hast begotten after them, thine own shall they be, —after the name of their brethren, shall they be called in their inheritance.

7 Car, lorsque je venais de Mésopotamie, Rachel me mourut en chemin même, dans la terre de Chanaan, et c’était le printemps: j’entrais à Ephrata, et je l’ensevelis près du chemin d’Ephrata, qui est appelée d’un autre nom Bethléhem.

But, as for me, when I came in from Padan, Rachel died by me, in the land of Canaan, in the way, while yet there was a stretch of country to come into Ephrath, —so I buried her there in the way to Ephrath, the same, is Bethlehem.

8 Or, voyant ses fils, il lui dit: Qui sont ceux-ci?

Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, —and said—Who are these?

9 Joseph répondit: Ce sont mes fils que Dieu m’a donnés en ce lieu. Approche-les de moi, dit Jacob, afin que je les bénisse.

And Joseph said unto his father, My sons, they are, whom God hath given me, in this place. And he said—Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, that I may bless them.

10 Car les yeux d’Israël étaient obscurcis, à cause de sa grande vieillesse, et il ne pouvait voir distinctement. Lors donc qu’ils furent approchés de lui, les ayant baisés et embrassés,

Now, the eyes of Israel, had become dim from old age, —he could not see, —so he drew them near unto him, and kissed them, and embraced them.

11 Il dit à son fils: Je n’ai pas été privé de te voir; de plus. Dieu m’a montré ta postérité.

And Israel said unto Joseph, To see thine own face, had I not thought, —and lo! God hath caused me to see even thy seed!

12 Lorsque Joseph les eut retirés des bras de son père, il se prosterna, incliné vers la terre.

And Joseph brought them out from beside his knees, and bowed himself down with his face towards the earth.

13 Puis, il plaça Ephraïm à sa droite, c’est-à-dire, à la gauche d’Israël, et Manassé à sa gauche, c’est-à-dire à la droite de son père, et il les approcha tous deux de lui.

And Joseph took them both, —Ephraim in his right hand on Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand, on Israel’s right hand, and drew them near unto him.

14 Israël étendant sa main droite, la posa sur la tête d’Ephraïm, le plus jeune des deux frères, et la gauche sur Manassé, qui était l’aîné, changeant ses mains de place.

Then Israel put forth his right hand and laid it upon the head of Ephraim, though, he, was the younger, and his left hand upon the head of Manasseh, —crossing his hands, although, Manasseh, was the first-born.

15 Et Jacob bénit les fils de Joseph, et il dit: Que le Dieu en présence duquel ont marché mes pères Abraham et Isaac, le Dieu qui me nourrit depuis mon enfance jusqu’au présent jour;

Thus blessed he Joseph, and said, —God himself—before whom walked my fathers. Abraham and Isaac, God himself—who hath been my shepherd, since I came into being until this day; —

16 Que l’ange qui m’a délivré de tous les maux, bénisse ces enfants; que mon nom soit invoqué sur eux, et les noms aussi de mes pères Abraham et Isaac, et qu’ils croissent en multitude sur la terre.

The Messenger—who hath been my redeemer from all evil—bless the lads! And may there be called upon them, my name, and the name of my fathers. Abraham and Isaac; And may they swarm into a multitude, in the midst of the earth!

17 Mais Joseph, voyant que son père avait posé la main droite sur la tête d’Ephraïm, en eut une grande peine, et, prenant la main de son père, il tâcha de la lever de dessus la tête d’Ephraïm et de la transporter sur la tête de Manassé.

And Joseph saw that his father had laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim and it was displeasing in his eyes, —so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from off the head of Ephraim, on to the head of Manasseh.

18 Et il dit à son père: Il ne convient pas de faire ainsi, mon père: puisque celui-ci est l’aîné, mettez votre main droite sur sa tête.

And Joseph said unto his father—Not so, my father! for, this, is the firstborn, lay thy right hand upon his head.

19 Mais Jacob, refusant, dit: Je le sais, mon fils, je le sais: celui-ci sera aussi chef de peuples, et il se multipliera: mais son frère plus jeune, sera plus grand que lui, et sa postérité formera un grand nombre de nations.

And his father refused, and said—I know—my son, I know! He also, shall become a people, and he also, shall become great, —but nevertheless, his younger brother, shall become greater than he, and his seed, shall become a filling up of the nations.

20 Il les bénit donc en ce moment-là, disant: En toi sera béni Israël, et l’on dira: Dieu te fasse comme à Ephraïm et Manassé. Ainsi il mit Ephraïm devant Manassé.

And he blessed them on that day, saying—In thee, let Israel bless himself saying, God set thee as Ephraim, and as Manasseh! So he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Et il dit à Joseph son fils: Voici que moi je meurs, mais Dieu sera avec vous, et il vous ramènera dans le pays de vos pères.

And Israel said unto Joseph: Lo! I, am about to die, —but it shall come to pass that, God will be with you, and will take you back into the land of your fathers.

22 Je te donne de plus qu’à tes frères une part que j’ai enlevée à l’Amorrhéen avec mon glaive et mon arc.

But, I, have given to thee one mountain-track above thy brethren, —which I took out of the hand of the Amorite, with my sword and with my bow.
