Genèse 44

1 Or Joseph commanda à l’intendant de sa maison disant: Emplis les sacs de ces hommes d’autant de blé qu’ils en peuvent contenir, et mets l’argent de chacun dans le haut de son sac.

And Joseph commanded the steward of his house, saying: Fill their sacks with corn, as much as they can hold: and put the money of every one in the top of his sack.

2 Mais place à l’entrée du sac du plus jeune ma coupe d’argent, et le prix du blé qu’il a donné. Et il fut fait ainsi.

And in the mouth of the younger’s sack put my silver cup, and the price which he gave for the wheat. And it was so done.

3 Et, au lever du matin, on les renvoya avec leurs ânes.

And when the morning arose, they were sent away with their asses.

4 Et déjà ils étaient sortis de la ville, et ils avaient fait un peu de chemin; alors Joseph ayant appelé l’intendant de sa maison: Lève-toi, dit-il, et poursuis ces hommes; et quand tu les auras atteints, dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?

And when they were now departed out of the city, and had gone forward a little way; Joseph sending for the steward of his house, said: Arise, and pursue after the men: and when thou hast overtaken them, say to them: Why have you returned evil for good?

5 La coupe que vous avez dérobée, est celle dans laquelle boit mon maître, et avec laquelle il a coutume de deviner: c’est une chose très mauvaise que vous avez faite.

The cup which you have stolen is that in which my lord drinketh, and in which he is wont to divine: you have done a very evil thing.

6 Celui-ci fit comme il lui avait été ordonné; et les ayant atteints, il leur dit le commandement mot pour mot.

He did as he had commanded him. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them the same words.

7 Ils répondirent: Pourquoi notre seigneur parle-t-il ainsi, comme si vos serviteurs avaient commis un crime si grand?

And they answered: Why doth our lord speak so, as though thy servants had committed so heinous a fact?

8 L’argent que nous avons trouvé dans le haut de nos sacs, nous l’avons rapporté de la terre de Chanaan: comment arrive-t-il doue que nous avons dérobé de la maison de votre maître de l’or ou de l’argent?

The money, that we found in the top of our sacks, we brought back to thee from the land of Chanaan: how then should it be that we should steal out of thy lord’s house, gold or silver?

9 Que celui, quel qu’il soit de vos serviteurs, auprès de qui sera trouvé ce que vous cherchez, meure, et nous, nous serons esclaves de notre seigneur.

With whomsoever of thy servants shall be found that which thou seekest, let him die, and we will be the bondmen of my lord.

10 Il leur dit: Qu’il soit fait selon votre avis: que celui auprès de qui il sera trouvé, soit mon esclave; mais vous, vous serez innocents.

And he said to them: Let it be according to your sentence: with whomsoever it shall be found, let him be my servant, and you shall be blameless.

11 C’est pourquoi descendant promptement leurs sacs à terre, chacun ouvrit le sien.

Then they speedily took down their sacks to the ground, and every man opened his sack.

12 L’ intendant les ayant fouillés, commençant depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit, trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.

Which when he had searched, beginning at the eldest and ending at the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.

13 Ainsi eux, leurs vêtements déchirés, et leurs ânes rechargés, retournèrent à la ville.

Then they rent their garments, and loading their asses again, returned into the town.

14 Et Juda le premier avec ses frères entra auprès de Joseph (car il n’était pas encore sorti du lieu), et tous ensemble se précipitèrent à terre devant lui.

And Juda at the head of his brethren went in to Joseph, (for he was not yet gone out of the place), and they altogether fell down before him on the ground.

15 Joseph leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous voulu agir ainsi? ignorez-vous qu’il n’y a point d’homme semblable à moi dans l’art de deviner?

And he said to them: Why would you do so? know you not that there is no one like me in the science of divining.

16 Et Juda: Que répondrons-nous à mon seigneur? lui dit-il; ou que dirons-nous, ou bien que pourrons-nous légitimement prétexter? Dieu a découvert l’iniquité de vos serviteurs: nous voilà tous esclaves de mon seigneur, et nous, et celui auprès de qui a été trouvée la coupe.

And Juda said to him: What shall we answer my lord? or what shall we say, or be able justly to allege? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are all bondmen to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.

17 Joseph répondit: Loin de moi d’agir ainsi! Que celui qui a dérobé ma coupe, soit mon esclave; pour vous, retournez libres vers votre père.

Joseph answered: God forbid that I should do so: he that stole the cup, he shall be my bondman: and go you away free to your father.

18 Mais Juda, s’approchant plus près, dit avec assurance: Je vous prie, mon seigneur, que votre serviteur fasse entendre un mot à votre oreille, et ne vous irritez point contre votre serviteur; car vous êtes après Pharaon,

Then Juda coming nearer, said boldly: I beseech thee, my lord, let thy servant speak a word in thy ears, and be not angry with thy servant: for after Pharao thou art,

19 Mon seigneur. Vous avez au commencement demandé à vos serviteurs: Avez-vous un père ou un autre frère?

My lord. Thou didst ask thy servants the first time: Have you a father or a brother?

20 Et nous, nous avons répondu à vous, mon seigneur: Nous avons un père qui est vieux, et un enfant très jeune qui lui est né dans sa vieillesse, et dont le frère utérin est mort; sa mère n’a laissé que celui-ci, mais son père l’aime tendrement.

And we answered thee, my lord: We have a father an old man, and a young boy, that was born in his old age; whose brother by the mother is dead: and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him tenderly.

21 Alors vous avez dit à vos serviteurs: Amenez-le-moi, et je poserai mes yeux sur lui.

And thou saidst to thy servants: Bring him hither to me, and I will set my eyes on him.

22 Et nous avons ajouté à mon seigneur: Cet enfant ne peut quitter son père; car s’il le laisse, son père mourra.

We suggested to my lord: The boy cannot leave his father: for if he leave him, he will die.

23 Et vous avez répliqué à vos serviteurs: Si votre frère le plus jeune ne vient avec vous, vous ne verrez plus ma face.

And thou saidst to thy servants: Except your youngest brother come with you, you shall see my face no more.

24 Lors donc que nous fûmes montés vers votre serviteur notre père, nous lui rapportâmes tout ce que nous avait dit mon seigneur.

Therefore when we were gone up to thy servant our father, we told him all that my lord had said.

25 Et notre père dit: Retournez et achetez-nous un peu de blé.

And our father said: Go again, and buy us a little wheat.

26 Nous lui répondîmes: Nous ne pouvons aller: si notre frère le plus jeune descend avec nous, nous partirons ensemble; autrement, lui absent, nous n’osons voir la face de cet homme.

And we said to him: We cannot go: if our youngest brother go down with us, we will set out together: otherwise, without him we dare not see the man’s face.

27 A quoi lui répliqua: Vous savez que ma femme m’a donné deux fils.

Whereunto he answered: You know that my wife bore me two.

28 L’un est sorti, et vous avez dit: Une bête féroce l’a dévoré; et jusqu’ici il ne reparaît point.

One went out, and you said: A beast devoured him: and hitherto he appeareth not.

29 Si vous emmenez encore celui-ci, et que quelque chose lui arrive eu chemin, vous ferez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur dans les enfers. (Sheol h7585)

If you take this also, and any thing befall him in the way you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow unto hell. (Sheol h7585)

30 Si j’entre donc auprès de votre serviteur notre père, et que l’enfant n’y soit pas (comme l’âme de l’un dépend de l’âme de l’autre),

Therefore if I shall go to thy servant our father, and the boy be wanting, (whereas his life dependeth upon the life of him, )

31 Et qu’il voie qu’il n’est pas avec nous, il mourra, et vos serviteurs feront descendre ses cheveux blancs avec douleur dans les enfers. (Sheol h7585)

And he shall see that he is not with us, he will die, and thy servants shall bring down his gray hairs with sorrow unto hell. (Sheol h7585)

32 Que je sois votre esclave, moi particulièrement, qui l’ai reçu sur ma foi, et qui en ai répondu, disant: Si je ne le ramène, je serai coupable d’un crime envers mon père à jamais.

Let me be thy proper servant, who took him into my trust, and promised, saying: If I bring him not again, I will be guilty of sin against my father for ever.

33 C’est pourquoi je demeurerai votre esclave pour l’enfant au service de mon seigneur, et que l’enfant remonte avec ses frères;

Therefore I thy servant will stay instead of the boy in the service of my lord, and let the boy go up with his brethren.

34 Car je ne puis revenir vers mon père, l’enfant absent, de peur que je n’assiste comme témoin du malheur qui va accabler mon père.

For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I be a witness of the calamity that will oppress my father.
