Genèse 38
1 Dans le même temps, Juda, s’éloignant de ses frères, alla loger chez un homme d’Odollam, du nom d’Hiras.
And it fortuned at that tyme that Iudas went from his brethren and gatt him to a man called Hira of Odollam
2 Et il vit là la fille d’un homme de Chanaan, du nom de Sué, et l’ayant prise pour femme, il vécut avec elle.
and there he sawe the doughter of a man called Sua a Canaanyte. And he toke her ad went in vnto her.
3 Elle conçut et enfanta un fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Her.
And she conceaued and bare a sonne and called his name Er.
4 Et ayant conçu une seconde fois, elle nomma le fils qui naquit Onan.
And she conceaued agayne and bare a sonne and called him Onan.
5 Elle en enfanta aussi un troisième, qu’elle appela Séla: celui-ci né, elle cessa d’enfanter davantage.
And she conceaued the thyrde tyme and bare a sonne whom she called Scla: and he was at Chesyb when she bare hem.
6 Or Juda donna à son premier-né Her une femme du nom de Thamar.
And Iudas gaue Er his eldest sonne a wife whose name was Thamar.
7 Mais Her, le premier-né de Juda, fut très méchant eu la présence du Seigneur; et par le Seigneur il fut frappé de mort.
But this Er Iudas eldest sonne was wicked in the syghte of the LORde wherfore the LORde slewe him.
8 Juda dit donc à Onan, son fils: Prends la femme de ton frère, et unis-toi à elle pour susciter des enfants à ton frère.
Than sayde Iudas vnto Onan: goo in to thi brothers wyfe and Marie her and styrre vp seed vnto thy brother.
9 Mais celui-ci sachant que les enfants qui naîtraient de son union avec la femme de son frère ne seraient pas à lui, empêchait qu’elle ne devînt mère, pour ne pas qu’il naquît des enfants du nom de son frère.
And when Onan perceaued that the seed shulde not be his: therfore when he went in to his brothers wife he spylled it on the grounde because he wold not geue seed vnto his brother.
10 Et c’est pourquoi le Seigneur le frappa, parce qu’il faisait une chose détestable.
And the thinge which he dyd displeased the LORde wherfore he slew him also.
11 A cause de cela Juda dit à Thamar sa belle-fille: Reste veuve dans la maison de ton père, jusqu’à ce que Séla mon fils soit devenu grand; car il craignait que lui aussi ne mourût comme ses frères. Celle-ci s’en alla et habita dans la maison de son père.
Than sayde Iudas to Thamar his doughter in lawe: remayne a wydow at thi fathers house tyll Sela my sonne be growne: for he feared lest he shulde haue dyed also as his brethren did. Thus went Thamar and dwelt in hir fathers house.
12 Mais bien des jours s’étant écoulés, mourut la fille de Sué, femme de Juda, qui s’étant consolé après le deuil, montait à Thamnas vers les tondeurs de brebis, lui et Hiras d’Odollam, pasteur de ses troupeaux.
And in processe of tyme the doughter of Sua Iudas wife dyed. Than Iudas when he had left mornynge went vnto his shepe sherers to Thimnath with his frende Hira of Odollam.
13 Or on annonça à Thamar que son beau-père montait à Thamnas pour tondre ses brebis.
And one told Thamar saynge: beholde thy father in lawe goth vp to Thimnath to shere his shepe.
14 Celle-ci, ses habits de veuvage quittés, prit un voile, et s’étant déguisée, elle s’assit dans le carrefour du chemin qui conduit à Thamnas, parce que Séla était déjà devenu grand, et qu’elle ne l’avait pas eu pour époux.
And she put hyr wydows garmetes of from her and couered her with a clooke and disgyssed herself: And sat her downe at the entrynge of Enaim which is by the hye wayes syde to Thimnath for because she sawe that Sela was growne and she was not geue vnto him to wife.
15 Lorsque Juda l’eut aperçue, il crut que c’était une femme de mauvaise vie; car elle avait couvert son visage, afin qu’elle ne fût pas reconnue.
When Iuda sawe her he thought it had bene an hoore because she had couered hyr face.
16 Et s’approchant d’elle, il dit: Laisse-moi aller avec toi; car il ne savait pas qu’elle fût sa belle-fille. Elle répondant: Que me donneras-tu pour que tu viennes avec moi?
And turned to her vnto the waye and sayde come I praye the let me lye with the for he knewe not that it was his doughter in lawe. And she sayde what wylt thou gyue me for to lye with me?
17 Il dit: Je t’enverrai un chevreau de mes troupeaux. Mais elle reprenant: Je consentirai à ce que tu veux, si tu me donnes un gage, en attendant que tu envoies ce que tu promets.
Tha sayde he I will sende the a kydd fro the flocke. She answered Than geue me a pledge till thou sende it.
18 Juda lui demanda: Que veux-tu que je te donne pour gage? Elle répondit: Ton anneau, ton bracelet et le bâton que tu liens à la main. Ayant donc vu Juda une seule fois, cette femme conçut,
Than sayde he what pledge shall I geue the? And she sayde: they sygnett thy necke lace and thy staffe that is in thy hande. And he gaue it her and lay by her and she was with child by him.
19 Et se levant, elle s’en alla; puis ayant quitté le vêtement qu’elle avait pris, elle se revêtit de ses habits de veuvage.
And she gatt her vp and went and put her mantell from her ad put on hir widowes rayment agayne.
20 Or Juda envoya le chevreau par son pasteur qui était d’Odollam, afin qu’il retirât le gage qu’il avait donné à cette femme; celui-ci ne l’ayant pas trouvée,
And Iudas sent the kydd by his neybure of Odollam for to fetch out his pledge agayne from the wifes hande. But he fownde her not.
21 Demanda aux hommes de ce lieu: Où est cette femme qui était assise dans le carrefour? Tous répondant: Il n’y a pas eu en ce lieu de femme de mauvaise vie.
Than asked he the men of the same place saynge: where is the whoore that satt at Enaim in the waye? And they sayde: there was no whoore here.
22 Il revint vers Juda et lui dit: Je ne l’ai pas trouvée; et les hommes même de ce lieu m’ont dit que jamais là ne s’est assise femme débauchée.
And he came to Iuda agayne saynge: I can not fynde her and also the men of the place sayde: that there was no whoore there.
23 Juda répondit: Qu’elle le garde; elle ne peut pas au moins nous accuser de mensonge; moi, j’ai envoyé le chevreau que j’avais promis, et toi, tu ne l’as pas trouvée.
And Iuda sayde: let her take it to her lest we be shamed: for I sente the kydd and thou coudest not fynde her.
24 Mais voilà qu’après trois mois on annonça à Juda cette nouvelle: Thamar ta belle-fille a forniqué, et elle paraît être enceinte. Juda répondit: Produisez-la en public, afin qu’elle soit brûlée.
And it came to passe that after. iij. monethes one tolde Iuda saynge: Thamar thy doughter in lawe hath played the whoore and with playnge the whoore is become great with childe. And Iuda sayde: brynge her forth ad let her be brente.
25 Thamar, comme elle était conduite au supplice, envoya vers son beau-père, disant: C’est de l’homme à qui sont ces gages que j’ai conçu: vois à qui sont cet anneau, ce bracelet et ce bâton.
And when they brought her forth she sent to her father in lawe saynge: by the ma vnto whome these thinges pertayne am I with childe. And sayd also: loke whose are this seall necklace and staffe.
26 Juda, les gages reconnus, dit: Elle est plus juste que moi, puisque je ne l’ai pas donnée à Séla mon fils. Toutefois il ne la connut pas depuis.
And Iuda knewe them saynge: she is more rightwes tha I because I gaue her not to Sela my sone. But he laye with her nomore.
27 Or les couches pressant, parurent deux jumeaux dans son sein; et à la sortie même des enfants, l’un présenta sa main, à laquelle la sage-femme lia un fil d’écarlate, disant:
When tyme was come that she shulde be delyuered beholde there was. ij. twynnes in hyr wobe.
28 Celui-ci sortira le premier.
And as she traveled the one put out his hande and the mydwife toke and bownde a reed threde aboute it saynge: this wyll come out fyrst.
29 Mais, lui retirant sa main, l’autre sortit; et la sage-femme dit: Pourquoi le mur a-t-il été rompu à cause de toi? Or pour cette raison elle lui donna le nom de Pharès.
But he plucked his hande backe agayne and his brother came out. And she sayde: wherfore hast thou rent a rent vppon the? and called him Pharez.
30 Ensuite sortit son frère, à la main duquel était le fil d’écarlate; elle l’appela Zara.
And afterward came out his brother that had the reade threde about his hade which was called Zarah.
