Genèse 32
1 Jacob aussi s’en alla par le chemin qu’il avait pris: et les anges du Seigneur furent à sa rencontre.
Forsothe Jacob wente forth in the weie in which he began, and the aungels of the Lord metten him.
2 Quand il les eut vus, il dit: C’est le camp de Dieu; et il appela ce lieu du nom de Mahanaïm, c’est-à-dire camp.
And whanne he hadde seyn hem, he seide, These ben the castels of God; and he clepide the name of that place Manaym, that is, castels.
3 Mais il envoya aussi des messagers devant lui à Esaü son frère dans la terre de Séir, dans la contrée d’Edom,
Sotheli Jacob sente bifore him also messangeris to Esau, his brother, in to the lond of Seir, in the cuntrey of Edom;
4 Et leur commanda, disant: Parlez ainsi à mon seigneur Esaü: Voici ce que dit votre frère Jacob: J’ai demeuré comme étranger chez Laban, et j’y ai été jusqu’au présent jour.
and comaundide to hem, and seide, Thus speke ye to my lord Esau, Thi brothir Jacob seith these thingis, Y was a pilgrym at Laban, `and Y was `til in to present dai;
5 J’ai des bœufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs et des servantes; et j’envoie maintenant un message à mon seigneur, afin de trouver grâce en votre présence.
Y haue oxun, and assis, and scheep, and seruauntis, and hand maydis, and Y sende now a message to my lord, that Y fynde grace in thi siyt.
6 Et les messagers retournèrent vers Jacob, disant: Nous sommes venus auprès d’Esaü, votre frère, et voici qu’il vient en grande hâte au-devant de vous avec quatre cents hommes.
And the messageris turneden ayen to Jacob, and seiden, We camen to Esau, thi brother, and lo! he hastith in to thi comyng, with foure hundrid men.
7 Jacob eut une grande frayeur, et tout épouvanté, il divisa les gens qui étaient avec lui, de même que les troupeaux, les brebis, les bœufs et les chameaux, en deux troupes,
Jacob dredde greetli, and he was aferd, and departide the puple that was with hym, and he departide the flockis, and scheep, and oxun, and camels, in to twei cumpenyes;
8 Disant: Si Esaü vient à une troupe et qu’il la batte, l’autre qui restera, sera sauvée.
and seide, If Esau schal come to o cumpeny, and schal smyte it, the tothir cumpeny which is residue schal be saued.
9 Jacob dit ensuite: Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Seigneur qui m’avez dit: Retourne en ton pays et au lieu de ta naissance et je te ferai du bien,
And Jacob seide, A! God of my fadir Abraham, and God of my fadir Isaac, A! Lord, that seidist to me, Turne thou ayen in to thi lond, and in to the place of thi birthe, and Y schal do wel to thee,
10 Je suis au-dessous de vos miséricordes et de la fidélité que vous avez gardée envers votre serviteur. J’ai passé ce Jourdain n’ayant qu’un bâton; et maintenant je reviens avec deux troupes.
Y am lesse than alle thi merciful doyngis, and than thi treuthe which thou hast fillid to thi seruaunt; with my staf Y passide this Jordan, and now Y go ayen with twei cumpanyes;
11 Délivrez-moi de la main de mon frère Esaü, car je le crains extrêmement; de peur que, venant, il ne frappe la mère avec les enfants.
delyuere thou me fro the hond of my brothir Esau, for Y drede him greetli, lest he come and sle the modris with the sones.
12 Vous avez dit que vous me feriez du bien, et que vous étendriez ma postérité comme le sable de la mer, lequel par sa multitude ne peut se compter.
Thou spakist that thou schuldist do wel to me, and shuldist alarge my seed as the grauel of the see, that mai not be noumbrid for mychilnesse.
13 Et, quand il eut dormi là cette nuit, il sépara de ce qu’il avait, des présents pour Esaü son frère:
And whanne Jacob hadde slept there in that nyyt, he departide of tho thingis whiche he hadde yiftis to Esau, his brothir,
14 Deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers,
two hundrid geet, and twenti buckis of geet, two hundrid scheep, and twenti rammys,
15 Trente femelles de chameaux pleines avec leurs petits, quarante vaches, vingt taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix de leurs petits.
camels fulle with her foolis thretti, fourti kyen, and twenti boolis, twenti sche assis, and ten foolis of hem.
16 Et il envoya par ses serviteurs chacun des troupeaux séparément, et il dit à ses serviteurs: Précédez-moi, et qu’il y ait un intervalle entre un troupeau et un troupeau.
And he sente bi the hondis of his seruauntis alle flockis bi hem silf; and he seide to hise children, Go ye bifore me, and a space be betwixe flok and flok.
17 Et il commanda au premier, disant: Si tu rencontres mon frère Esaü, et qu’il te demande: À qui es-tu? ou bien: Où vas-tu? ou: À qui sont ces bêtes que tu suis?
And he comaundide to the formere, and seide, If thou schalt mete my brothir Esau, and he schal axe thee, whos man thou art, ether whidir thou goist, ether whos ben these thingis whiche thou suest,
18 Tu répondras: A votre serviteur Jacob, qui les envoie en présent à mon seigneur Esaü: lui-même aussi vient après nous.
thou schalt answere, Of thi seruaunt Jacob, he hath sent yiftis to his lord Esau, and he cometh aftir vs.
19 Il donna pareillement des ordres au second, au troisième, et à tous ceux qui suivaient les troupeaux, disant: C’est en ces mêmes termes que vous parlerez à Esaü, quand vous l’aurez trouvé.
In lijk maner, he yaf comaundementis to the secounde, and to the thridde, and to alle that sueden flockis; and seide, Speke ye bi the same wordis to Esau,
20 Et vous ajouterez: Lui-même aussi votre serviteur Jacob suit notre chemin; car il a dit: Je l’apaiserai par les présents qui me précèdent, et après cela je le verrai, peut-être qu’il me deviendra propice.
whanne ye fynden hym, and ye schulen adde, Also Jacob hym silf thi seruaunt sueth oure weie. For Jacob seide, Y schal plese Esau with yiftis that goon bifore, and aftirward Y schal se hym; in hap he schal be mercyful to me.
21 C’est pourquoi les présents le précédèrent, mais lui-même demeura cette nuit-là dans le camp.
And so the yiftis yeden bifore hym; sotheli he dwellide in that nyyt in the tentis.
22 Et lorsqu’il se fut levé de bonne heure, il prit ses deux femmes et autant de servantes avec ses onze fils, et passa le gué de Jaboc.
And whanne Jacob hadde arise auysseli, he took hise twei wyues, and so many seruauntessis with enleuen sones, and passide the forthe of Jaboth.
23 Et ayant fait passer tout ce qui lui appartenait,
And whanne alle thingis that perteyneden to hym weren led ouer, he dwellide aloone, and, lo!
24 Il demeura seul: et voilà qu’un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au matin.
a man wrastlide with him til to the morwetid.
25 Or comme cet homme vit qu’il ne pouvait le vaincre, il toucha le nerf de sa cuisse, lequel aussitôt se dessécha.
And whanne the man seiy that he miyte not ouercome Jacob, he touchide the senewe of Jacobis hipe, and it driede anoon.
26 Et il lui dit: Laisse-moi; car déjà se lève l’aurore. Jacob répondit: Je ne vous laisserai point, si vous ne me bénissez.
And he seide to Jacob, Leeue thou me, for the morewtid stieth now. Jacob answeride, Y schal not leeue thee, no but thou blesse me.
27 Il lui demanda donc: Quel est ton nom? Il répondit: Jacob.
Therfore he seide, What name is to thee? He answeride, Jacob.
28 Mais l’homme: On ne t’appellera plus, dit-il, du nom de Jacob, mais du nom d’Israël; parce que si tu as été fort contre Dieu, combien plus prévaudras-tu contre les hommes?
And the man seide, Thi name schal no more be clepid Jacob, but Israel; for if thou were strong ayens God, hou miche more schalt thou haue power ayens men.
29 Jacob lui demanda: Dites-moi, de quel nom vous appelez-vous? Il répondit: Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom? Et il le bénit en ce même lieu.
Jacob axide him, Seie thou to me bi what name thou art clepid? He answerde, Whi axist thou my name, whiche is wondirful? And he blesside Jacob in the same place.
30 Jacob appela ce lieu du nom Phanuel, disant: J’ai vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été sauvée.
And Jacob clepide the name of that place Fanuel, and seide, Y siy the Lord face to face, and my lijf is maad saaf.
31 Et le soleil se leva aussitôt après qu’il eut passé Phanuel; mais il boitait d’un pied.
And anoon the sunne roos to hym, aftir that he passide Fanuel; forsothe he haltide in the foot.
32 C’est pour ce motif que les enfants d’Israël ne mangent point jusqu’au présent jour, le nerf qui se dessécha dans la cuisse de Jacob, parce que l’ ange toucha le nerf de sa cuisse, qui fut paralysé.
For which cause the sones of Israel eten not `til in to present day the senewe, that driede in the hipe of Jacob; for the man touchide the senewe of Jacobs hipe, and it driede.
