Genèse 30
1 Or Rachel voyant qu’elle était stérile, conçut de la jalousie pour sa sœur, et dit à son mari: Donne-moi des enfants, autrement je mourrai.
And Rachel seeth that she hath not borne to Jacob, and Rachel is envious of her sister, and saith unto Jacob, 'Give me sons, and if there is none — I die.'
2 Jacob irrité lui répondit: Est-ce que moi je suis comme Dieu, qui t’a privée du fruit de ton sein?
And Jacob's anger burneth against Rachel, and he saith, 'Am I in stead of God who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'
3 Mais Rachel: J’ai, reprit-elle, ma servante Bala: prends-la, afin qu’elle enfante sur mes genoux, et que j’aie par elle des enfants.
And she saith, 'Lo, my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her, and she doth bear on my knees, and I am built up, even I, from her;'
4 Elle lui donna donc en mariage Bala, qui,
and she giveth to him Bilhah her maid-servant for a wife, and Jacob goeth in unto her;
5 Son mari l’ayant prise, conçut et enfanta un fils.
and Bilhah conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son,
6 Alors Rachel dit: Dieu a jugé en ma faveur, et a exaucé ma voix, me donnant un fils: et c’est pourquoi elle l’appela du nom de Dan.
and Rachel saith, 'God hath decided for me, and also hath hearkened to my voice, and giveth to me a son;' therefore hath she called his name Dan.
7 Et Bala, concevant de nouveau, enfanta un autre fils,
And Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant, conceiveth again, and beareth a second son to Jacob,
8 Au sujet duquel Rachel dit: Le Seigneur m’a mise aux prises avec ma sœur, et je l’ai emporté: et elle le nomma Nephtali.
and Rachel saith, 'With wrestlings of God I have wrestled with my sister, yea, I have prevailed;' and she calleth his name Napthali.
9 Lia, voyant qu’elle avait cessé d’enfanter, donna à son mari Zelpha sa servante,
And Leah seeth that she hath ceased from bearing, and she taketh Zilpah her maid-servant, and giveth her to Jacob for a wife;
10 Qui, ayant mis au monde un fils qu’elle avait conçu,
and Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth to Jacob a son,
11 Dit: Heureuse fortune! et c’est pourquoi elle l’appela du nom de Gad.
and Leah saith, 'A troop is coming;' and she calleth his name Gad.
12 Zelpha aussi enfanta un autre fils,
And Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth a second son to Jacob,
13 Et Lia dit: C’est pour mon bonheur; car les femmes me diront bienheureuse: à cause de cela elle l’appela Aser.
and Leah saith, 'Because of my happiness, for daughters have pronounced me happy;' and she calleth his name Asher.
14 Or Ruben étant sorti dans la campagne au temps de la moisson des blés, trouva des mandragores qu’il porta à sa mère Lia. Et Rachel dit: Fais-moi part des mandragores de ton fils.
And Reuben goeth in the days of wheat-harvest, and findeth love-apples in the field, and bringeth them in unto Leah, his mother, and Rachel saith unto Leah, 'Give to me, I pray thee, of the love-apples of thy son.'
15 Elle répondit: Crois-tu que c’est peu de m’avoir enlevé mon mari, si tu ne prends pas encore les mandragores de mon fils? Rachel reprit: Qu’il dorme avec toi cette nuit pour les mandragores de ton fils.
And she saith to her, 'Is thy taking my husband a little thing, that thou hast taken also the love-apples of my son?' and Rachel saith, 'Therefore doth he lie with thee to-night, for thy son's love-apples.'
16 Ainsi Jacob revenant le soir de la campagne, Lia sortit à sa rencontre, et; C’est avec moi, dit-elle, que tu viendras, parce que je t’ai obtenu au prix des mandragores de mon fils. Et il dormit avec elle cette nuit-là.
And Jacob cometh in from the field at evening; and Leah goeth to meet him, and saith, 'Unto me dost thou come in, for hiring I have hired thee with my son's love-apples;' and he lieth with her during that night.
17 Or Dieu exauça ses prières; car elle conçut et enfanta un cinquième fils,
And God hearkeneth unto Leah, and she conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son, a fifth,
18 Et elle dit: Dieu m’a donné une recompense, parce que j ai donné ma servante à mon mari: et elle l’appela du nom d’Issachar.
and Leah saith, 'God hath given my hire, because I have given my maid-servant to my husband;' and she calleth his name Issachar.
19 Lia concevant de nouveau, enfanta un sixième fils;
And conceive again doth Leah, and she beareth a sixth son to Jacob,
20 Alors elle dit: Dieu m’a douée d’un don excellent; encore cette fois mon mari sera avec moi, parce que je lui ai donné six fils; et c’est pourquoi elle l’appela du nom de Zabulon.
and Leah saith, 'God hath endowed me — a good dowry; this time doth my husband dwell with me, for I have borne to him six sons;' and she calleth his name Zebulun;
21 Après Zabulon elle enfanta une fille du nom de Dina,
and afterwards hath she born a daughter, and calleth her name Dinah.
22 Le Seigneur se souvint aussi de Rachel; il l’exauça et la rendit féconde.
And God remembereth Rachel, and God hearkeneth unto her, and openeth her womb,
23 Elle conçut et enfanta un fils, disant: Dieu m’a retiré mon opprobre.
and she conceiveth and beareth a son, and saith, 'God hath gathered up my reproach;'
24 Et elle l’appela du nom de Joseph, disant: Que le Seigneur me donne encore un autre fils.
and she calleth his name Joseph, saying, 'Jehovah is adding to me another son.'
25 Or Joseph né, Jacob dit à son beau-père: Laisse-moi retourner dans ma patrie, et dans mon pays.
And it cometh to pass, when Rachel hath borne Joseph, that Jacob saith unto Laban, 'Send me away, and I go unto my place, and to my land;
26 Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants, pour lesquels je t’ai servi, afin que je m’en aille; tu sais quel a été mon service près de toi.
give up my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and I go; for thou — thou hast known my service which I have served thee.'
27 Laban lui dit: Que je trouve grâce devant toi; j’ai connu par mon expérience que le Seigneur m’a béni à cause de toi;
And Laban saith unto him, 'If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes — I have observed diligently that Jehovah doth bless me for thy sake.'
28 Fixe la récompense que je dois te donner.
He saith also, 'Define thy hire to me, and I give.'
29 Mais Jacob répondit: Tu sais comment je t’ai servi, et comment entre mes mains se sont accrues tes possessions.
And he saith unto him, 'Thou — thou hast known that which I have served thee [in], and that which thy substance was with me;
30 Tu avais peu avant que je vinsse chez toi, et maintenant tu es devenu riche; car le Seigneur t’a béni à mon arrivée. Il est donc juste qu’enfin je songe aussi à ma propre maison.
for [it is] little which thou hast had at my appearance, and it breaketh forth into a multitude, and Jehovah blesseth thee at my coming; and now, when do I make, I also, for mine own house?'
31 Alors Laban lui demanda: Que te donnerai-je? Et lui répondit: Je ne veux rien; mais si tu fais ce que je demande, je paîtrai de nouveau et je garderai tes troupeaux.
And he saith, 'What do I give to thee?' And Jacob saith, 'Thou dost not give me anything; if thou do for me this thing, I turn back; I have delight; thy flock I watch;
32 Parcours tous tes bestiaux, et sépare toutes les brebis mouchetées et à toison tachetée; et tout ce qui sera noirâtre, ou tacheté ou moucheté, tant parmi les brebis que parmi les chèvres, sera ma récompense.
I pass through all thy flock to-day to turn aside from thence every sheep speckled and spotted, and every brown sheep among the lambs, and speckled and spotted among the goats — and it hath been my hire;
33 Et ma justice répondra demain pour moi, quand le temps de l’accord sera arrivé, devant toi: et ce qui ne sera pas moucheté, ou tacheté ou noirâtre, tant parmi les brebis que parmi les chèvres, me convaincra de larcin.
and my righteousness hath answered for me in the day to come, when it cometh in for my hire before thy face; — every one which is not speckled and spotted among [my] goats, and brown among [my] lambs — it is stolen with me.'
34 Laban dit: J’agrée ce que tu demandes.
And Laban saith, 'Lo, O that it were according to thy word;'
35 Et il sépara ce jour-là même les chèvres, les brebis, les boucs et les béliers mouchetés ou tachetés; mais tout le bétail qui était d’une seule couleur, à la toison blanche ou noire, il le remit aux mains de ses fils.
and he turneth aside during that day the ring-streaked and the spotted he-goats, and all the speckled and the spotted she-goats, every one that [hath] white in it, and every brown one among the lambs, and he giveth into the hand of his sons,
36 Et il mit l’espace de trois journées de chemin entre lui et son gendre qui paissait le reste de ses troupeaux.
and setteth a journey of three days between himself and Jacob; and Jacob is feeding the rest of the flock of Laban.
37 Jacob donc prenant des branches vertes de peuplier, d’amandier et de platane, les écorça en partie: or les écorces enlevées, il parut une blancheur dans les endroits qui en avaient été dépouillés; mais les autres endroits qui étaient entiers, restèrent verts; de cette manière la couleur devint variée.
And Jacob taketh to himself a rod of fresh poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut, and doth peel in them white peelings, making bare the white that [is] on the rods,
38 Et il les plaça dans les canaux où on versait l’eau, afin que, lorsque les troupeaux viendraient boire, ils eussent les branches devant les yeux et qu’à leur aspect ils conçussent.
and setteth up the rods which he hath peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (when the flock cometh in to drink), over-against the flock, that they may conceive in their coming in to drink;
39 Il arriva, en effet, que dans la chaleur même du coït les brebis regardaient les branches et faisaient des petits tachetés, mouchetés et parsemés de marques de diverses couleurs.
and the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock beareth ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted ones.
40 Jacob divisa le troupeau et plaça les branches dans les canaux devant les yeux des béliers: or tous les animaux blancs et tous les noirs étaient pour Laban, et tous les autres pour Jacob, leurs troupeaux étant séparés entre eux.
And the lambs hath Jacob parted, and he putteth the face of the flock towards the ring-streaked, also all the brown in the flock of Laban, and he setteth his own droves by themselves, and hath not set them near Laban's flock.
41 Lors donc qu’à la première saison les brebis étaient saillies, Jacob plaçait les branches dans les canaux devant les yeux des béliers et des brebis, pour qu’en les regardant elles conçussent.
And it hath come to pass whenever the strong ones of the flock conceive, that Jacob set the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, to cause them to conceive by the rods,
42 Mais quand c’était l’accouplement d’arrière-saison, et la dernière conception, il ne les y plaçait pas. Ainsi, ce qui était de l’arrière-saison appartint à Laban, et ce qui était de la première à Jacob.
and when the flock is feeble, he doth not set [them]; and the feeble ones have been Laban's, and the strong ones Jacob's.
43 Celui-ci donc devint riche outre mesure, et il eut beaucoup de troupeaux, de servantes et de serviteurs, de chameaux et d’ânes.
And the man increaseth very exceedingly, and hath many flocks, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.
